#4 TCU looks to avoid upset this weekend

12:12 PM Thu, Nov 05, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

If Gary Patterson and TCU are going to finish the year undefeated, it's going to be tough road. Three of the four teams left on their schedule still have the ability to make a bowl game.

The Horned Frogs first test will be this weekend in San Diego State. The Aztecs are 4-4 and are coming off two big wins that make a bowl appearances seem like a reality.

"Anytime we have gone to San Diego, it has been a tough ball game...

Frogs take giant leap

12:14 AM Sun, Oct 25, 2009 |
Arnold Payne

The 8th ranked TCU Horned Frogs took a giant leap towards their conference title hopes and a national BCS bid defeating the 16th ranked BYU Cougars 38-7 before a sellout crowd of 64,000 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah.

For the second year in a row the Frogs have defeated the Cougars by a 25 point or better margin. Saturday's 31 point defeat by TCU was BYU's largest margin of lost since a 52-21 loss to Utah November 20, 2004. ...

No. 9 TCU opens its fifth season of Mountain West Conference play when it travels

Here is what AccuScore is forecasting for the game:

TCU's Dalton named co-Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week

10:28 AM Mon, Sep 28, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

In a game that meant more to the program than any other this season to date, TCU quarterback Andy Dalton was special. The junior, who is on the Manning Watch list, went 17-of-26 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in the Horned Frogs victory against Clemson. He also added a team-best 86 yards rushing on a career-high 19 attempts. The performance earned him co-Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor...

TCU jumpes to #10

4:17 PM Sun, Sep 27, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

TCU coach Gary Patterson is probably feeling pretty good today. His team is off to a 3-0 start, the program collected $1 million dollars for traveling to Clemson yesterday, and the coaches rewarded the Horned Frogs for beating the Tigers on the road with a No. 10 ranking in the newest USA Today Coaches' Poll.

TCU jumped up four spots and are the second highest ranked non-BCS team after No. 5 Boise State. In the AP Poll, they went from...

TCU visits ACC opponent for the second time this season

4:13 PM Fri, Sep 25, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

With BYU and Utah both losing last weekend, the hopes for a Mountain West conference BCS bowl bid could very well be left in the hands of TCU. The Horned Frogs, who are currently ranked 14th in the country, travel to South Carolina this weekend to take on the Clemson Tigers.

"They are a very fast team and a big ACC school. They have some great players and one of the best running backs in the nation. Defensively, we have to be on guard...

TCU-Notre Dame in 2010 the kind of matchup college football needs

11:43 AM Thu, Jul 23, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

Notre Dame has been in touch with TCU about filling a spot on their 2010 football schedule Blue and Gold, a site dedicated to covering the Fighting Irish, reported Monday.

The game would pit one of college football's perennially overrated teams (Notre Dame) against a perennially underrated one (TCU).

These are exactly the kind of matchups college football fans love to s...

TCU baseball team finishes ranked 11th

12:05 PM Tue, Jun 30, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU baseball had it's most successful season this year and, appropriately, finishes the season with its highest ranking in school history, 11th.

It has been a good year for Horned Frog athletics. The football team finished the season ranked No. 7.

Here's more from TCU:

FORT WORTH, Texas - The historical 2009 baseball campaign saw the TCU baseball team finish ranked as high as No. 11 in the final poll of the season...

Rangers draft pitcher

7:12 PM Tue, Jun 09, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Texas Rangers used their first-round draft pick (14th overall) to take pitcher Matthew Purke, a lefty from Spring who had committed to TCU.

From the Rangers:

The Texas Rangers have selected left-handed pitcher Matthew Purke out of Klein High School in Spring, Texas, with the 14th overall selection in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"Our scouts like Matt's makeup and ability," said Rangers Ge...

TCU in exclusive company

11:17 AM Wed, Jun 03, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU athletic department sent an interesting note out today.

TCU, Florida and Texas are the only schools in the nation this season to finish in the top 10 in football and have a Super Regional baseball team.

The Horned Frog football team finished seventh in the country. Texas finished fourth in the AP Poll and third in the Coaches' Poll and, of course, Florida finished first in both polls.

TCU and Texas meet this we...

TCU proud of their five draft picks

6:27 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |
George Riba

Now that the NFL draft is over, it's time to give TCU some credit. The Horned Frogs had five players drafted over the weekend, that's more than any other college in the State of Texas.

"It goes to show you don't have to go to a Big 12 school to have good players," says Head Coach Gary Patterson. "That's what we're proving all along. You don't have to be in an automatic conference. Our guys are graduating, and they're also getting a ch...

TCU kicks student off sports talk show for having an opinion

10:40 AM Wed, Apr 22, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

I'm a very proud TCU graduate and a journalist.

That's why I was so upset when I read this story from today's TCU Daily Skiff, the campus newspaper.

Here's what happened, a journalism student that served as the TCU talking head on a Mountain West Conference sports talk s...

Kiper likes TCU's Hughes

11:10 AM Thu, Apr 09, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. really likes TCU All-American Jerry Hughes in next year's NFL draft.

Kiper has Hughes as the No. 2 most-coveted defensive end for the 2010 draft.

Kiper ranks Hughes behind only Greg Hardy of Ole Miss. Rounding out Kiper's top five are Willie Young (NC State), Georgia Selvie (South Florida) and Corey Wootton (Northwestern).

Hughes led the nation in 2008 with 15 sacks and six forced fumbles. Th...

TCU 2009 football schedule released

5:32 PM Thu, Mar 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU Horned Frogs are coming off of a season in which they finished 11-2 and ranked No. 7 in the country in both major polls. The Frogs' only losses were to two other top-10 teams, Utah and Oklahoma.

TCU has two good non-conference road games (Clemson and Virginia), their traditional Iron Skillet game with SMU and a silly game against 1-AA team Texas State, plus their eight game Mountain West Conference slate.

Here's the be...

TCU's Marcus Jackson is a leaping Frog

2:15 PM Wed, Mar 25, 2009 |
Arnold Payne

In 2008 Marcus Jackson was back-up quarterback for the TCU Horned Frogs behind starter Andy Dalton. In a move to give him additional playing time Coach Gary Patterson decided to move Jackson to the safety position.

Well half of that equation turned out to be a pretty good idea. Patterson soon realized with the departure of Jackson, his team was lacking in experience at the back-up QB position. In the event that Dalton was sidel...

TCU catches OU in football, sort of

6:21 PM Thu, Mar 12, 2009 |
George Riba

I saw where Oklahoma had their pro day this week and attracted representatives from 27 NFL teams. Not bad, but TCU had 27 NFL franchises represented at their pro day last week as well.

And the fastest time was recorded by Wide Receiver Quintin Chaney at 4.59. TCU's fastest time was turned in by running back Aaron Brown with a time of 4.49.

Get the picture? Looks to me like TCU is getting closer all the time. Now if they can j...

CONTACT COACHING

12:47 PM Fri, Mar 06, 2009 |
George Riba

TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson tried not to smile too much during his interview at the school's annual pro day. Seems he took a helmet in the mouth during spring drills and is missing a tooth Now that's being up close and personal.

NFL teams sent 27 representatives to see a dozen players workout in combine style. It was the largest number of scouts to ever see the TCU players workout at one time.

As expected, running back Aaro...

TCU Linebacker Robert Henson Has Big Draft Day Dreams

8:51 AM Tue, Jan 20, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

If you're friends with Robert Henson on Facebook, you know one thing; most of his posts are about working hard. That is what the graduating TCU senior linebacker is doing these days. Labeled by some NFL scouts as only a special teams guy, Henson is currently working six to seven hours a day to prove them wrong.

"I really feel like I'm an every down linebacker," Henson stated. "I'm not saying that to be conceited or cocky, but I really ...

Catching Up With TCU Senior Linebacker Robert Henson

9:30 AM Sun, Jan 18, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Earlier this week I had a chance to catch up with graduating TCU senior linebacker Robert Henson. Henson accumulated over 270 tackles and 4 interceptions in his four-years with the Frogs. This April he will be anxiously watching to see if he is taken in the NFL draft.

TCU kicker born without full arm receives Rudy Award

9:07 PM Mon, Jan 12, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

TCU kicker Drew Combs is an inspiration.

Now he has received an honor from another inspirational football player.

Combs was born with a left arm that ends just below the elbow.

But he story is deeper. Combs planned to play at Arkansas, where he his dad was also a walk-on.

There, though, he was referred to as a "handicap kicker" and wasn't given a shot to really contribute.

He transferred to TCU and s...

Patterson a good fit at TCU

5:20 PM Thu, Jan 08, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

I love watching Gary Patterson during TCU games.

If nothing, he is entertaining.

It's also part of why he is such a good fit at TCU. He's a David going up against Goliath.

Patterson likes to say he takes young men other schools don't want, coaches 'em up and beats the team that thought the kids were too small and too slow.

TCU signed Patterson to a 5-year extension today. He'll make a reported $1.7 millions a ...

Ex-Baylor coach Guy Morriss has a new job

3:18 PM Wed, Jan 07, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Baylor head football coach and TCU alum Guy Morriss is now the head football coach at Texas A&M Commerce.

Since his firing at Baylor the former Kentucky head coach has been the associate head coach at Kentucky State.

I don't know much about the A&M Commerce program, but the football program has produced at least a couple former Dallas Cowboys: Harvey Martin and Wade Wilson, now the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach.

Slingin' Sammy Baugh greatest football player ever

11:00 AM Thu, Dec 18, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

In a blog just last week I talked about some of the greats in football and especially two early pioneers of the passing game who helped shape the NFL as we know it.

We lost one yesterday.

Slingin' Sammy Baugh starred at TCU before being a first-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins. He was part of the first Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

The greatest football player of all time?

10:28 AM Wed, Dec 10, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

It's one of those great bar discussions: Who is the best football player of all time?

Joe Montana? Jim Brown? Emmitt Smith? Bronko Nagurski? Walter Payton?

I've gone with Sammy Baugh (just partly because we're both TCU alums).

It's really pretty simple for me. Baugh revolutionized the passing game in the NFL and wasn't just a great quarterback, but was also the best cornerback and punter of his day.

Patterson Should Be The Nation's Coach Of The Year

9:29 AM Sat, Dec 06, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

If I had a vote in the 2008 Paul Bryant Award (Coach of the Year), it would be going to TCU coach Gary Patterson. While coaches like Kyle Whittingham -Utah, Nick Saban - Alabama, Mike Leach - Texas Tech, Mack Brown - Texas, and Bob Stoops- Oklahoma all had great years, it was Patterson that did the best coaching job.

In his eighth season as headman for the Frogs, Patterson led TCU to a 10-2 regular season record and currently a No. 1...

Neil Dougherty watches TCU-SMU game

1:26 PM Thu, Nov 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

So last night I went to Fort Worth to watch my beloved Horned Frogs play SMU.

I was not only pleasantly surprised by the strong performance by TCU in the 62-44 win, but I was also surprised to see former TCU coach Neil Dougherty there.

He was fired just a few months ago by TCU after six seasons and just a 75-106 record.

Would you return to your workplace after being fired to watch someone else do your job?

The Patterson Rumors Continue, Is Clemson Interested?

11:20 AM Wed, Nov 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

According to my sources, if you didn't know I also run a website dedicated to TCU, Coach Gary Patterson has not interviewed with Clemson AD Terry Phillips. Sources are saying that the rumors are false.

Earlier today Patterson told Fort Worth Star Telegram TCU Beat Writer Mercedes Mayer, "I'm just telling you they're doing the same thing Kansas State did." Patterson attended the TCU women's basketball game last night and is planning on ...

TCU Football Still Not Getting Respect

1:24 AM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

It seems like no matter whom TCU beats or how many wins they wrack up (40 in four-years), the Horned Frogs never get the respect they deserve. When the USA Today Coaches Poll came out earlier in the week, #17 TCU found themselves behind #14 BYU. This was significant because TCU destroyed the Cougars four weeks ago on national television by 25 points. While TCU did have one more loss than BYU, their two blemishes came against #5 Oklahoma and #7...

TCU up big at halftime, 24-3

2:51 PM Sat, Nov 22, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

Someone should have warned the Air Force Academy that (#15) TCU (9-2) is a little upset. The Frogs have not played in 16 days and are coming off a close loss to (#7) Utah, but today is easily taking care of business against (8-3) Air Force at halftime, 24-3.

Air Force came into the game with the nation's 4th best rushing attack, but TCU (#1 in the nation in run defense) has allowed only 54 yards rushing at halftime.

TCU sophom...

Should TCU fans be happy or sad?

7:21 PM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

Earlier today, TCU head coach Gary Patterson addressed the Mountain West Conference media in his weekly telephone conference call.

A few questions about the last game of the season this Saturday with Air Force did come up, but Austin Meek of the Topeka Capital-Journal felt he needed to address Patterson's job rumors.

Reporter: Wondered if you could take us through your initial reaction when that report came out a couple weeks ...

Who Could Come Calling For Coach Patterson?

2:39 PM Mon, Nov 10, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

With recent false rumors, Frog fans are scrambling to figure out ways to show Coach Patterson that TCU is the best place for him! Would he ever look else where this off-season? I'm one that personally hopes not, but these might be some of the schools that would come calling for his services. Would he listen?

TCU spokesman: Patterson report not true

2:45 PM Fri, Nov 07, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

TCU sports information director Mark Cohen says there is "no truth" to a report that football coach Gary Patterson is the new coach at Kansas State.

The report from a Kansas State sports website cites several sources that the school has hired Patterson, a K-State alum, as their head football coach.

But Cohen says Patterson and his agent have had "no contact" with Kansas State.

Patterson has been at TCU since 1998, first...

#12 TCU Not Caught Looking Ahead

12:06 AM Sun, Nov 02, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

Unlike Arizona State earlier in the year, the UNLV Rebels didn't find #12 TCU looking ahead to its big game next week. Behind a three touchdown performance by TCU quarterback Andy Dalton, the Frogs easily won in Vegas tonight, 44-14. TCU (9-1) has now set up a huge game with Utah on Thursday night. The Utes are currently ranked #10 in the BCS.

"You always want to play in the big arena," TCU coach Gary Patterson told the media after ton...

Frogs Avoid Letdown Against Wyoming, 54-7

12:51 AM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

In a game that some were calling the "SMU of 2005", TCU used a school record 226 receiving yards from Jimmy Young, to blow out the Wyoming Cowboys 54-7 on Saturday night.

After skyrocketing up the polls and appearing in the first BCS standings of the year, (8-1, 5-0 MWC) TCU was trying to avoid a major let down against (2-6, 0-5 MWC) Wyoming. From the very start, the superior frogs outmatched the Cowboys.

TCU jumped out to a 14...

TCU's baseball recruiting class ranked #9

2:01 PM Fri, Oct 10, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU baseball has the ninth best recruiting class in the country, at least according to Baseball American.

This is the second time in school history the Horned Frogs have got a top-10 recruiting class ranking. In 2004 the Frogs had the third-best class in the nation.

"This is great recognition of the hard work of our staff led by Todd Whitting," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "This class is very talented on the field and...

TCU Looks To Rebound

4:57 PM Sat, Oct 04, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

We are a couple minutes away from the start of (1-3)San Diego State at (4-1)TCU. The Frogs will look to rebound after losing to #1 ranked OU last weekend.

I am in the press box and fielding questions from the World Wide Web.

Starting TCU Quarterback Andy Dalton will not be playing today. Junior Marcus Jackson will get the start. Jackson has had spot starts in his career throwing for over 800 yards and 5 touchdowns.

TCU is a BCS buster no more!

11:27 PM Sat, Sep 27, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

The (#2) Oklahoma Sooners proved tonight that they are deserving of the No. 1 ranking in the nation and it came by the expense of (#23) TCU. Oklahoma forced TCU into four turnovers and allowed the Frogs to gain only 102 yards on the ground to win decisively 35-10.

"They are deserving. In this day and age if you win all your football games you deserve the right. They have a good football team," said Coach Patterson after the game. "The...

OU has hit the field!

4:49 PM Sat, Sep 27, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

We are now down to one hour before kick-off. Oklahoma has hit the field and has started to warm up. The crowd is already really starting to file in.

TCU's band is here and many Frog fans are in attendance. It's nice to see the support for the program.

I will be shooting the game from the sidelines, but will be back at halftime for a report.

Here are a few notes to chew on from the TCU Media Relations Department...

(24) TCU at (2) Oklahoma 2 hours out!

3:39 PM Sat, Sep 27, 2008 |

We are about 2 hours away from kickoff in Norman, where the (24) TCU Horned Frogs will be taking on the (2) Oklahoma Sooners. With USC losing on Thursday night, Oklahoma has a great chance to move to the number one spot with a good performance against the Frogs.

I have just arrived and I am in the press box and fielding questions from the World Wide Web.

This year TCU is flying under the MWC radar compared to BYU and Utah. Wh...

TCU-OU game has added meaning with USC loss

11:27 AM Fri, Sep 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Before #1 USC's loss to unranked Oregon State Thursday night, the TCU-Oklahoma game Saturday was an important top-25 match up.

Now it will decide who is #1.

If #2 OU wins, they slide up to the top spot.

But a upset by #24 TCU would significantly shake things up.

The third ranked team, Georgia, has a tough game against Alabama and there are other SEC teams, Flordia and LSU, four and five in the rankings.

TCU's Patterson on taking on OU, more

4:11 PM Wed, Sep 24, 2008 |

TCU football coach Gary Patterson is getting his own top 25 ranked team ready to take on #2 Oklahoma Saturday and the always excited coach is his usual pumped up.

Here are his thoughts this week:

TCU moves into top 25

12:50 PM Sun, Sep 21, 2008 |

A day after dismantling SMU 48-7 the TCU Horned Frogs have moved into the top 25 in both major polls.

The Frogs are 24 in the AP Poll and 23 in the Coaches' Poll.

Of course it gets a bit harder for TCU now. The Frogs head to Norman to play 2nd-ranked OU Saturday.

Mountain West Conference foes BYU and Utah are 11 and 17, respectfully in both polls.

TCU hosts BYU Thursday, Oct. 16 and plays at Utah on another T...

TCU keeps the Iron Skillet!

Josh Harvey

Senior running back Aaron Brown had 15 touches for 116 total yards and Joseph Turner had a pair of touchdowns to lead (4-0) TCU to a 48-7 victory over (1-3) SMU on Saturday night.

With the constant reminder all week of 2005, TCU traveled to Dallas and took care of business retaining the Iron Skillet in the process. The Mustangs wrecked TCU's chances of a perfect season 3 years ago in Dallas. TCU ended up with an 11-1 record that year.<...

TCU moves to 3-0

Andy Dalton had 145 yards passing and 91 yards on the ground to lead the TCU Horned Frogs (3-0) to a 31-14 victory over Stanford (1-2) on Saturday afternoon. The game was moved up six hours from the original start time due to Hurricane Ike.

Both teams battled rainy and windy conditions the whole afternoon, but it didn't stop either from trying to sling the ball around. Dalton and Stanford quarterback Tavi Pritchard combined for 57 atte...
