TCU picked third in MWC

TCU is the best team in the Mountain West Conference not from the State of Utah.

Problem is both BYU and Utah also play in the MWC.

Two-time defending conference football champion BYU was predicted to capture its third consecutive title in 2008 in a poll of media members.

BYU was 11-2 overall and finished with a top 20 ranking in the final USA Today Coaches (t-14), Associated Press (14) and Harris (18) polls.

Former TCU All-American Jake Arrieta and fellow former Horned Frog Eugene Espineli will be playing for the United States Olympic team in next month.

TCU is the only school with two former players on the squad.

Before he became the NFL MVP, LaDainian Tomlinson was a backup running back and kick returner for the TCU Horned Frogs as a sophomore in 1998.

Now the San Diego Chargers star running back has been named to the 75th Anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team.

TCU beat USC 28-19 in the 1998 Sun Bowl. It was the Horned Frogs' first bowl win in 41 years, dating back to a 28-27 victory over Jim Brown and Syracuse in the 1957 Cotton Bowl.

The closer from the TCU baseball team is now a millionaire.

Andrew Cashner, who just completed his junior year in Fort Worth, was the Chicago Cubs first round draft pick (19th overall), now he gets a $1.54 million signing bonus and $75,000 that will go toward finishing school.

As part of the deal, the right-handed pitcher receives an invitation to the 2009 big league Spring Training camp in 2009.

If it wasn't enough that TCU safety Stephen Hodge is a preseason All-American and was named the state's top defensive back by Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, he is now on the watch list for the 2008 Jim Thorpe Award, honoring the nation's top defensive back.

He's also on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy which recognizes the nation's best defensive player.

TCU baseball finishes year at 23

TCU baseball is among the best in the country for a second straight season.

Baseball America ranked the Horned Frogs at No. 23 in its final poll, while Collegiate Baseball ranked the Frogs 26th.

The Frogs ended the year with a 44-19 record.

The SMU Mustangs will be seeing a lot of their regional rivals in the years to come.

TCU has announced its 2008 TCU Lettermen's Association Hall of Fame Class.

It's the 40th Anniversary of the TCU Lettermen's Association Hall of Fame. This year's inductees are swimmer Becky Brill, Olympic sprinter Beverly McDonald, football lineman W.C. Nix and defensive back Dr. John Richards and the 1938 TCU National Championship football team.

New TCU men's basketball coach Jim Christian has signed Dawson Community College forward Gregory Richardson.

The 6-8 forward averaged 7.8 points and 8 rebounds a game. He had a team-high 13 blocked shots and had a 53.9 percent (76-of-141) field goal percentage.

TCU senior Joe Brown is the 2007-08 Mountain West Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

The honor came Tuesday from the league office.

Brown graduated in May after posting a 3.68 grade point average, while earning an undergraduate degree in marketing and entrepreneurial management.

TCU assistant Sean Woods, a former Kentucky player, is the new head basketball coach at Mississippi Valley State University.

He replaces James Green, who left earlier this year to become the coach at Jacksonville State in Alabama.

Former TCU Horned Frogs Virgil Hodge and Delwayne Delaney placed first overall in both the 100 and 200 meters for women and men, respectively, at the St. Kitts National Track & Field Championship and Olympic Qualifier this weekend.

Three TCU football players have been named honorable-mention preseason All-Americans by The Sporting News.

Linebacker Jason Phillips, safety Stephen Hodge and center Blake Schlueter received the honor.

Phillips was also mentioned as a candidate for the Butkus Award, honoring the nation's top linebacker. Hodge was named a candidate for the Thorpe Award, given to the outstanding defensive back in the country.

TCU linebacker Robert Henson is marrying Sarah Jakes, normally something like that wouldn't be big news. But Jakes is the daughter of Bishop T.D. Jakes, the pastor at the mega-church The Potter's House.

They're set to marry Saturday and some notables are invited: Dr. Phil McGraw, actor/director Tyler Perry, former Dallas Cowboys Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders, and Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert.
