Recently in Stars CategoryJune 19, 1999. Do you remember what happened on that day which just happens to be 10 years ago? The Dallas Stars won the franchise's first and only Stanley Cup in dramatic fashion with Brett Hull's goal at 14:51 of the 3rd overtime in Buffalo against the Buffalo Sabres. I remember watching this game, at age 14, while on vacation in a hotel in New Mexico. I wasn't in New Mexico for vacation; it was a stopping point on the way ...
That didn't take long. Dave Tippett is out as head coach of the Dallas Stars and Marc Crawford is in. New Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club hired Crawford, 48, to be the 20th head coach in franchise history. Nieuwendyk was hired May 31. Crawford is the 16th winningest coach in NHL history with 470 career victories, and has also coached the 15th most games in league history at 987, over 13 season...
There's a lid on the firing of Stars Head Coach Dave Tippett. No one is returning calls and nobody is talking about the report of his firing. I'm wondering if this is the way the team will do business from now on since Joe Nieuwendyk took over as General Manager. Maybe the rookie general manager needs a crash course in public relations. The few ...
Ron Washington, the guy who is about to be fired about every May, who has only been the Rangers manager for a little more than two and a half years and whose winning percentage is .490 is now the longest tenured coach of a pro sports team in Dallas-Fort Worth. Ron Washington. I know, I'm having a hard time believing it too. Nothing against Washington, I like him. But he still seems like the new guy and now he's the old pro. Was...
I'd like to begin with a qualifying statement: I do not cover the Dallas Stars regularly enough to claim to be any kind of authority on them, but like anyone else, I have some first impressions. The firing seems a little out of left field. Just over a year ago, the Stars made a run into the Western Conference Finals, where they were eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup champs (Detroit). The 2008-09 season began with Sean Avery infect...
Dave Tippett has b...
Listening to ballgames on the radio as a kid and watching on television first got me interested in sportscasting. I was as much a fan of the guys behind the mic as I was the players on the field or the court. I remember listening to my tiny transistor radio under the covers late at night whenever the Rangers were playing on the West Coast, even though I should have been asleep getting ready for school the next day. I've been doing noth...
The Dallas Stars' Mike Modano has decided to officially return to play in his 20th NHL season in 2009-10, the team announced Monday. Modano said he made his decision over the last few weeks, leaning towards a return since the season ended on April 10. "I've made my decision and I'm coming back to play," Modano said. "I think everyone eventually knew I was going to come back, but I still wanted to take some time and think about...
Not making the playoffs does have one advantage for the Dallas Stars, a high draft pick. The team will pick eighth this year, their highest pick in 13 years. Here's more from the Stars: The Dallas Stars have the eighth overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, determined Tuesday evening in the National Hockey League Draft Drawing. The New York Islanders won the Drawing, giving them the number one overall pick in this year's dra...
Stars Head Coach Dave Tippett got a vote of confidence from Co-General Manger Brett Hull today. "You could have Vince Lombardi behind the bench and you have that many key players out, he did the best job he could," says Hull. The Stars missed 380 man games because of injury. A good example is Captain Brenden Morrow who missed 64 games this season. "When you don't make the playoffs, there are always things. I mean, we're going...
Stars center Mike Modano doesn't want to talk about next year. Their season is over and Modano skips the meeting with reporters and plays golf instead. The rest of the guys pick up whatever stuff they need and head off for a longer off season than they're used to. It's only the third time since they moved to Dallas in '93 they've missed the playoffs. But a season with an incredible number of injuries ends with a 12th ...
Here's Stars center Mike ...

The Dallas Stars are now 33-33-10. Their season is over and they still have six games to play. The Stars are in 12th place in the NHL's Western Conference, the top eight of the 15 teams in the conference make the playoffs. The Stars are also seven points behind St. Louis, which is in eighth place. It's a frustrating end to a frustrating season. The Stars have lost their last seven, including two in overtime. The Stars...
Even when the Stars play well, they can't get a win. And did you see how this thing ended? Marty Turco made 30 saves and didn't allow a goal thru overtime. While Turco was hot on one end, the Stars took 29 shots on goal on the other. But still no score after overtime. So then came the shoot-out... Jere Lehtinen evened things up at 1 goal a piece in the third round. Then the LA Kings' Justin Williams was up next...
Man, did the Stars ever need that one. After that strange 5-game losing streak at home, they went on the road and somehow got 5 points out of 6, including the win in San Jose. After losing at home Tuesday (6 in a row), Dallas beat Carolina last night 3-2. With the victory, the Stars are back in the playoff picture, in the 8th spot with 72 points. Tomorrow, the Stars have a very important home game against Minnesota, which has 71 points...
The Stars lose another game at home Sunday night, that's six in a row now and stars coach Dave Tippett blames Stars center Mike Modano With 16 games to play, the Stars are out of a playoff spot now, but only because of a tiebreaker. There's about five or six teams that could still get one of those playoff spots, but Tippett said Sunday night they need more from Modano. He calls out Modano for goodness' sakes. Modano is ...
Dallas Stars forward Steve Ott can return to play The NHL announced Monday that Ott has been suspended without pay Ott and Moen squared off after the final horn sounded in The Dallas Stars traded defenseman Doug Janik to the Montreal Canadiens for center Steve Bégin Thursday. He is scheduled to practice with the club Friday afternoon. "Steve is a gritty, honest player with a very strong work ethic," said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. "He's good on the penalty kill and he is a competitor in every sense of the word. We think he'll be a very good addition to our group as we continue to fight toward the pl...
The Dallas Stars took their practice to Farmers Branch today, but they left the workers at the arena with a little extra work. Left Wing Fabian Brunnstrom got a little frustrated during a four on four team playoff, missed a goal, then took his frustrations out on the glass. It shattered with a bang bringing cheers from his teammates and a surprised look on the face of Brunnstrom. It was actually funny to watch and amazing to see the class blow...
The Dallas Stars assigned left wing Sean Avery to the Hartford Wolf Pack in the American Hockey League, a developmental league, Tuesday morning. It's a fitting place for a guy who has a lot of developing to do. The Wolf Pack is a New York Rangers affiliate. He's already practiced with Hartford. The Stars placed Avery on waivers Saturday, which he cleared -- not so surprisingly -- Monday. "I would like to thank...
Although the last local professional sports championship win was a decade ago when the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup, it has been about two decades since all of our area teams missed the post-season in the same season. I know it's been rough with the Cowboys not winning a playoff game since 1996, but at least all of the teams from the four major sports (well, I'm counting the NHL as major) have made the playoffs since then. It is h...
The Dallas Stars' radio broadcasts are moving down the dial. Starting next season, the play-by-play team of Ralph Strangis and Daryl Reaugh will be calling the games on KTCK SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket. The NHL team and The Ticket today announced a five-year deal under which all regular season games will be carried on KTCK's three frequencies (1310 and 1700 AM and 104.1 FM). The Ticket will also broadcast pre-and post-game sho...
I did a story last night on the Dallas Stars hitting the midpoint of their season, and one part of it showed the team's record when Sean Avery was on the team, and since he's been gone (8-11-4 with him, 10-6-2 without). One other thing I looked at, but didn't get into for the story, was what the Stars' record will be at the end of the year if they stay on the current pace of winning/losing, since the Avery suspension. Of course, I didn...
Dallas Stars center Mike Modano is an All-Star for the 7th time. The National Hockey League announced today that he will be a member of the Western Conference roster for the 57th NHL All-Star Game. He'll be the only Stars representative. The game is Sunday, Jan. 25 at Bell Centre in Montreal. Modano, 38, has skated in All-Star Games in 1993 (Montreal), 1998 (Vancouver), 1999 (Tampa Bay), 2000 (Toronto), 2003 (Florida)...
By the reaction of his teammates, his coach and the team owner when Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery was first suspended by the NHL commissioner, don't expect a warm reception when he returns to the team Dec. 16. In fact, don't expect him to necessarily return at all. It's pretty clear the team from the owner on down doesn't care too much for the loudmouth, attention-seeking bad boy. "I completely support the league's d...
I'm sure many of us have found out about an ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend dating someone else, maybe even someone we know. We probably weren't happy about it. We may even have been jealous about it. But none of us have a forum to blast the ex and the new partner for the entire nation to hear. Sean Avery did. When you watch the interview in question, it didn't appear that Avery reacted off the cuff or emotionally. It see...
While you're out shopping on Black Friday, trying to scoop up that 40-inch HDTV on sale or attempting to diet after binging on Turkey the day before, let's all try to keep our local teams in mind this holiday season. We have a lot to be thankful for, but here are some Thanksgiving wishes for the players and teams we hold so dear. For the Cowboys: Let's wish for team harmony, better bodyguards for Pacman Jones, a long-a...
The Dallas Stars announced today that the left wing Brenden Morrow is out indefinitely with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee that will require surgery. He is expected to miss up to six months. The club also recalled right wing Landon Wilson from Grand Rapids (AHL). "We are obviously very disappointed to hear the news about Brenden's knee," said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. "As our captain, he will obviously be mi...
The season just started, but on this election day the All-Star voting is about to begin for the NHL. Five Dallas Stars - forwards Mike Modano, Brenden Morrow, Mike Ribeiro, Brad Richards and goaltender Marty Turco - have been named to the ballot. The Stars' ballot representation is tied for the third-most players among NHL clubs (only the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings have more players on the ballot, with six each)...
If you like hockey and like being nice, the Dallas Stars have a deal for you. The Dallas Stars, the North Texas Food Bank and American Airlines Center, in conjunction with News/Talk 820 WBAP, will hold a Food Drive for victims of Hurricane Ike this Thursday, Sept. 25, prior to the Stars' first preseason home game vs. Colorado. The Food Drive will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at American Airlines Center, as non-perishable canne...
From the Dallas Stars: FRISCO, Tex. - The Dallas Stars announced today that center Stu Barnes has announced his retirement from the National Hockey League after a 16-year career, and has signed a two-year contract to join the Stars' coaching staff as an assistant coach. In addition, the club announced two-year contract extensions for Associate Coach Rick Wilson and Assistant Coach Mark Lamb, whose contracts were set to expire after the...
The Dallas Stars introduced Sean Avery at the American Airlines Center today. He certainly seemed like a level headed guy despite all the crazy things we've heard about him as the most hated man in the NHL. How about those knock down, drag out fights he has had with Stars Left Wing Brenden Morrow. "I think with hockey players, the one, is that we can have a battle, but as soon as we become teammates, it's kind of all forgotten," says Avery. H...
The Dallas Stars have acquired a former top pick of the Los Angeles Kings. The Stars traded for right wing Lauri Tukonen, a first-round selection (No. 11 overall) in the 2004 Entry Draft by the Kings. Tukonen has skated in five career NHL games with the Kings. The Stars sent left wing Richard Clune, Dallas' third-round selection (No. 71 overall) in the 2005 Entry Draft, to Los Angeles. "Lauri is a promising pros...
The Dallas Stars will begin the 2008-08 season against a familiar foe, both a conference rival and former head coach when Ken Hitchcock and the Columbus Blue Jackets come to Dallas Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Stars will also host nine of the 15 Eastern Conference teams, up from the five inter-conference games the last three seasons. The Stars 41 home games features 20 weekend contests (six Friday, 10 Saturday, four Sunday). ...It's a little bit of a tease. But if the muggy July weather has you thinking hockey, the Dallas Stars can at least give you something to look forward to. The Dallas Stars announced the team's pre-season schedule today, including four games at American Airlines Center in Dallas. They will play seven pre-season games in 2008 in all. Also announced is that the Stars' four-day training camp will open September 19 at the Frisco Dr ...
DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars signed left wing Jamie Benn to a The 18-year-old played last season in the Western Hockey League, The Dallas Stars are holding their development camp this week. 27 of their top prospects are in Frisco for the week, including their five draft picks from the recent '08 draft. I was talking with Jason Rademan, one of the Stars' PR guys. He was explaining to me that basically three guys in the camp have a realistic chance of making the Stars roster sometime next season (those three are forwards James Neal, Francis Wathier, and Raymond ...
From the Associated Press: A statement issued by the Stars on Friday says Eriksson will The 22-year-old Swede scored 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 As you might expect, it was a very quite lockerrom after the Stars lost to the Red Wings Monday night. They lost the series 4-games to 2.. A team that had come so far this season ended up two wins short of going to the Stanley Cup Finals. "It was a combination of hoping to win and Detroit pushing the issue and wanting to win," said a disappointed Head Coach Dave Tippett. Tippett described Detroit as a very good hockey team. How...
And that'll just about do it for the Stars season. With the Stars on a power play, Brenden Morrow tried a cross-ice pass near Detroit's blue line. Henrick Zetterberg as there to pick it off, and race toward Marty Turco. Zetterberg buried the short-handed goal and the Stars season all with one deft flick of the wrist. 4-0 Red Wings. In the immortal words of Edward R. Murrow: Good night and good luck. ...It couldn't have started out any worse fo the Stars in game 6 of the Western Conference finals. The Stars failed to score on their first power play chance, and then gave up the first goal of the game to Chris Draper, the last guy they wanted to score after Draper's cheap shot to Brenden Morrow's head in game 5. But then it just got worse. A power play for the Red Wings turned into a 2-0 lead when Pavel Datsyuk punched in a point bla...
Tonight we'll see how good a prognosticator Stars Goaltender Marty Turco's old college coach at the University of Michigan is. When I talked to him in Ann Arbor, Michigan last week, he was convinced that once Turco got rolling, he would be tough to stop. " I mean I wouldn't be surprised," says Red Berenson. "He just needs one good game at Joe Louis and everything will change." Well Turco got a good game under his belt in Joe Louis Ar...
Captain Brenden Morrow scores with 5:26 left. Ok, If they can't hang on to a 3-1 lead, we've got some major problems. ...
Is it me? Or does a lead not feel safe against this Red Wings team. The Stars are up 2-1 with 8 minutes left in the game and I feel like the Red Wings have the advantage. If the Stars manage to hang on and win this one, they only have to do it 3 more times. And if the Stars do pull off a victory in this series against the Red WIngs... I'm going on the record now and calling it the greatest comeback in the history of sports...
Marty Turco's former college coach has been watching the Western Conference finals and can't figure out why Turco and the Dallas Stars haven't beaten the Red Wings yet. "It could be a combination of a lot of things," says Red Berenson who won two National Championships with Turco as his goaltender. "I'd like to put a record down and say this is the way its gonna stay, I mean I wouldn't be surprised, he just needs one good game at Joe L...
I just took a quick poll of the sports staffers working in the WFAA sports department today? George Riba, Reporter: No, the Red Wings are just playing to well. Joe Trahan, Anchor-Reporter: No, not even if the Stars play their best game of the series. Sean Hamilton, Sports Exec Producer: Yes, this Stars team isn't going...
For a few minutes it looked like the Stars fortunes may have been changing. After dominating the first period, but still trailing 2-1 after one, Brad Richards got a lucky bounce. From the left corner, he threw a shot toward the goal, it bounced off a skate and past Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood. I made a note, "Is this where the Stars turn this series around?" Not so much. Eight minutes later, the Red Wings found a streaking...
From their energy to their style of play and their execution, things couldn't have been much better for the Stars in the first period, except for the most important thing, that is. The puck didn't hit the back of the net enough. The Stars dominated the 1st 20 minutes of game 3 in their best-of-seven against Detroit, but only managed to get 7 shots on goal, with Nick Grossman netting the lone goal. I'm not a hockey purist, but it su...
