Recently in Golf CategoryIt took 5 days and 2 weather suspensions, but the 109th U.S. Open is finally complete at the Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, New York. While, it seemed to take forever to play this tournament, the lack of drama until today left many, including myself, longing for a more exciting finish. Today, I feel we got that. First of all, we had an unknown leader in Rickey Barnes. The 519th ranked player in the World had a 6 shot lead at on...
Prior to this weekend, I really didn't know the answer to this question either. A few fast facts about Lucas Glover, our new US Open champion: He has one career win, in 2005 at the Funai Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort. Glover was 23-under par and won $792,000. Glover was a 3-time All America at Clemson, from 1998-2001. He and his grandfather Dick Hendley are the first grandfather-grandson combo in Clemson's hall of fam...
As the 2009 U.S. Open took its final strokes, North Texas' Hunter Mahan struggled in his efforts to keep alive and bring the trophy back to his home in Plano. He finished at an even par and had consistent numbers throughout the match. In the end, neither the greens, nor the pins, were friendly to him. There was one moment ...
A $3 million make-over was supposed to make Colonial tougher for the tour guys. Fort Worth's Rory Sabbatini estimated 2 to 3 shots harder per round. But these are not normal conditions at Colonial. There's ZERO wind. I mean none, zip, nada. And it doesn't matter how much more length or where they placed the bunkers, these guys are going to go low. Like the old ads said, these guys are good. Steve Stricker with back to back ...
WFAA's Joe Trahan and Arnold Payne at Colonial report Chad Campbell is withdrawing from the tournament and will likely miss several weeks with a calf injury. Campbell, a native of Andrews, Texas, felt something pop when he was playing on the 17th hole at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth. He tore a muscle in his left calf, said his friend Dale Funk, an orthopedic surgeon. Funk says Campbell will...
A mid-morning toast to PGA Tour rookie James Nitties, wishing him good luck at the Colonial. Last night, George Riba did a story on the Australian. The guy is an open book, just a pleasure to listen to, and Australian to boot. He was 3-under after his first round, and tees off at 1:43 today. A week ago, at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, Nitties was ...
Woody Austin, Tim Clark and Steve Stricker share the lead after 1 round at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Current Leaderboard: Click Here Tee Times for Friday: Click Here ...You've probably heard the saying that timing and location can be the difference of success or failure when i...
Fort Worth's Rory Sabbatini, by way of South Africa, roars to the top of the HP Byron Nelson Championship with a sizzling 64 today. Its another day with near perfect conditions especially for the early tee times. Sabbatini saving his round with a clutch par on number 3 - he hit it in the water and was staring at double-bogey, but holed out from a greenside bunker. Then he went on to birdie 4 of his last 6 holes, and right now stands atop th...
There's still time to vote for your top 5 golfers of all time. The top 5 will be announced Sunday on Dale Hansen's Sports Special. ...
Defending Champ Adam Scott is 1 under through 10. He started on the back 9 and almost aced 17, but then hit it into the drink on 18 but was able to save par.
Be sure to join us live Thursday at 6:30PM on KFWD 52, when our 30-minute show airs from the HP Byron Nelson Championship at TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas. We'll be joined by players, tour officials and maybe even a special guest or two. A whole 30-minute show devoted to the Byron Nelson....golf fans should not miss it. ...Corey Pavin has won every PGA tournament in Texas except one. He'll get what may be his last chance to win at the Byron Nelson this year, which would give him a career Texas Slam. "I'm not sure if I'll be playing in the future," Pavin said today. Pavin turns 50 in November and says he may not remain on the PGA Tour. "This is my last chance. I'd love to do it," he said. "I've won all the other Texas tournament...
Phil Mickelson was supposed to be in North Texas to play in the Byron Nelson this week and ...
Dale Hansen has a question for you... who are the top 5 golfers of all-time. He says we can all agree Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus are the top two, but who else fills out the top five? ...PGA golfer Rich Beem was at the Cowboys OTA practice today. He's developed a plan to help Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant Rick Behm, who was paralyzed in the team's training facility collapse earlier this month. Beem said he got lots of calls from friends concerned about him after the Cowboys collapse. The "Beem Fore Behm" program will donate $100 for every birdie Beem makes the next two weeks at the Byron Nelson and Colonia...
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo really getting in the swing of things this week. I've already blogged about Romo's attempt to qualify for the HP Byron Nelson Championship. That's set for Tuesday. Before that though, Romo will take his shot at qualifying for the U.S. Open. The outstanding Dallas National Golf Club hosting local qualifying Monday. I th...
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will try to keep a great golf season going Monday when he takes the first step towards qualifying for the HP Byron Nelson Championship. Last year, Romo failed to advance out of pre-qualifying by just one stroke. This year's pre-qualifier will be held on the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club's Dye and Hills courses. The top 23 finishers and ties from each course will make the Monday qualifier where the top 4...
Tony Romo is not like you and me. Not just is he the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback and dating Jessica Simpson, but he is also a very good golfer. So good, he's won two tournaments in the past few days. It's how he spent his birthday, Tuesday (as you can see in this video). But it's also part of the reason he gets so much critic...
Subject matter: Autographs. Circa 1996.
Watching Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson battle in their Masters pairing was amazing. Shot after shot, battle after battle. It was some of the most amazing individual competition, amazing because they're not actually playing each other. There's no offense or defense. It's each man trying his best to navigate at Augusta. But what sticks out for me is their demeanor. They certainly don't seem to like playing with each other too ...
The Masters may well be a tradition like no other, as Jim Nantz always says, but it hasn't been much of a tournament the last couple of years. The Sunday roars were gone because it played like a U.S. Open. Trevor Immelman wins with a final round 75 last year. That's okay in June, but not in April and not in Augusta. Bad weather might have been part of the reason for the bad golf, but not the only reason. The Masters is back to...
About, 30 minutes ago the Masters finally got put on TV. I don't know what took so long to start the coverage, but personally, I think it was way too late to start coverage. Thanks ESPN. I realize the Golf Channel had its updates, but why wait until so late in the day to start the coverage? Ok, now that I'm off my soapbox, DFW resident Chad Campbell is putting together quite a round. He is currently at -7 through 13 holes with birdies ...
Its the four best days of golf each year and I can't get enough of it. Becuase its the same venue each year, the Masters has an advantage over all the other major golf championships - familiarity. As an avid golfer, I know which shots the players need to hit and get to see if they can pull it off. My personal favorite hole - the par 5 13th. Off the tee, players have to hit a draw (right to left shot) to get it around the corn...
I asked Joe Trahan, our sports department golf guru (other than Dale Hansen of course) if he wanted to make a little wager. I gave him the choice, Tiger Woods or the field to win the Masters. He took Tiger. I knew he'd do that. So I'll have to settle for the 95 other golfers that will try to keep Tiger from winning his 5th Masters. I'm not liking my odds. Speaking of odds, let's check em out. Vegas has Tiger as a 2/1 favorite and they...
Tiger could not have asked for a better start in his return. On the first hole, Tiger had a good drive, a very nice approach shot, and a birdie. On his second hole, a par 5, he drove the fairway, and then hit his approach to within 5-6 feet. Brendan Jones conceded the hole, so Tiger is 2-up through two holes. He just hit his tee shot on a par 3, and ended up in the right bunker. ...Tiger never loses when he leads on the final day. It's true again. Everyone in the WFAA sports department was watching anxiously as Woods battled Rocco Mediate through the final holes of the playoff round and the sudden-death hole. Wow. Who says golf doesn't make for good television? ...Just wanted to give you the atmosphere from the 18th hole at yesterday's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Those of us in the local media who were there were assembled behind the 18th green. So, while we knew Phil Mickelson had driven the ball well left into the trees, we couldn't see him make his approach shot on 18 because of all the tree cover. So, after he surveyed the shot and went back towards the ball, we waited and watch...
Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth has a rich golf history, and with that history, some great stories. Mark Brooks grew up watching the tournament as a kid. "It was a little wilder in those days in the 70's, and since I've been playing, I haven't seen much. I've seen nothing," he says laughing. In 1993, Ian Baker-Finch made national head lines when he got a little breezy on the par 3, 13th. "He took his pants off and...
As an avid golfer, Tiger Woods has provided me so much excitement that I've come to expect greatness. But on the 72nd hole of the Arnold Palmer Invitational I actually let out a yell. I hadn't done that in quite some time with Woods because when you expect the greatness, it doesn't come as a surprise. It was a 24 foot putt. Before it, Woods was 0-for-21 on putts longer than 20 feet at the tournament. I knew he'd give it a good run,...
