Bob Hayes belongs in Hall of Fame

12:48 PM Wed, Aug 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors have overlooked former Dallas Cowboys receiver Bob Hayes for too long. This year, they again have the chance to include the Bullet.

Simply put, Bob Hayes changed the game. He was a dominant player of his era and he forced defense to go away from just using man coverage.

As world-class sprinter and two-time gold medalist, he burned defenses with speed, while still having the toughness of...

Nastia Liukin's welcome home

10:36 AM Thu, Aug 21, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Texas native and gold medal winner Nastia Liukin is scheduled to return from the Beijing Olympics this afternoon.

Liukin is scheduled to arrive on United Airlines Flight 478 at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Terminal B, gate B-37.

We'll have live coverage of her arrival on WFAA.com starting at about 4:15 p.m.

But the Parker homecoming planned Saturday for Liukin has been postponed by Texas-sized rains. Nine i...

Swimmer trading card for $500?

5:38 PM Thu, Aug 14, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

First, I didn't think trading cards were even still things anyone really cared about.

I mean they were kind of a hobby back when I was growing up and a much bigger deal for my dad's generation in the 50s and 60s.

But now there is a story about Michael Phelps' card.

And it's not just another card. It's now estimated to be worth $500, up from a measly $25 a couple weeks ago.

The cards are 2004 ones that he autog...

Darvis "Doc" Patton Looks Ready For Olympic Run

4:01 PM Thu, Jul 17, 2008 |
George Riba

I watched the morning workout of Darvis Patton, a former TCU sprinter in Arlington today, and was impressed. Of course when you know this guy just ran a 9.89 and a 9.84 at the Olympic trails a few weeks ago, it's easy to be wowed.

Patton is a 1996 graduate of Lake Highland and seems to be getting better with age. After all, he failed to make the relay team of his high school track team at a time when Marcus Stiggers was gathering all ...

Former Horned Frogs headed to Beijing for baseball

12:08 PM Thu, Jul 17, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former TCU All-American Jake Arrieta and fellow former Horned Frog Eugene Espineli will be playing for the United States Olympic team in next month.

TCU is the only school with two former players on the squad.

"To be the only university with two players represented on the Olympic baseball team exemplifies the greatness of TCU and the development of players in our program over the years," said TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle. <...

Yanez sees wrong, goes to Olympics

11:22 AM Wed, Jul 16, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

In the end, the Luis Yanez story follows exactly what your parents always tell you: When you make a mistake, fess up.

Yanez, the 19-year-old boxer from Duncanville, will go to Beijing after all as part of the U.S. Olympic boxing team.

But here is the key: Yanez agreed to pay a fine, undergo sports counseling and make a public apology. He also will personally apologize to his teammates and keep from making public remarks on th...

Boxer Yanez loses appeal, still mysterious

12:19 PM Mon, Jul 14, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

USA Boxing Judicial Committee has declined to reinstate Duncanville boxer Luis Yanez to the U.S. Olympic team.

There has to be more to the story then Yanez has told. It just doesn't seem right that USA Boxing would kick off a key member because he wanted to help his sister while she battled substance abuse.

Sure he there was some call confusion, but something just seems off.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in...

Startling cancer diagnosis for Olympian

11:02 AM Fri, Jul 11, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

It's the best and worst at the same time.

U.S. swimmer Eric Shanteau learned just a week before the Olympic trials that he has testicular cancer. Then the 24-year-old goes to Omaha, Neb. for the trials and beats a former world-record holder to earn a spot on the Olympic team and a trip to Beijing.

"I was sort of like, 'This isn't real. There's no way this is happening to me right now,"' Shanteau told The Associated Press. "You...

Luis Yanez Hearing Delayed

3:04 PM Thu, Jul 10, 2008 |
George Riba

Duncanville's Luis Yanez, who was removed from the U.S.Boxing team in late June, still doesn't know whether he will be reinstated.

A hearing was scheduled for today but was delayed until Friday morning. The reason is that the board, which was scheduled to conduct the hearing, didn't receive all the information it needed from Yanez in time to make a decision today.

Yanez was removed from the U.S. Olympic team after he failed t...

Torres won't swim 100 at Olympics

11:50 AM Mon, Jul 07, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

It's probably the best story leading up to the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

At 41-years-old, swimmer Dara Torres will be the first American to compete in five Olympics.

Her first was in 1984, before 2004 gold winner Michael Phelps was even born.

She won gold in L.A. in '84 and has nine total medals.

Now she says she won't compete in the 100-meter freestyle in Beijing. The 50 free will be her only individual ev...

Controversial swimsuit called 'technological doping'

5:08 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Speedo LZR (pronounced laser) is making, ahem, waves in the swimming world.

Thirty-eight of the 42 world records broken this year have been by swimmers wearing LZRs.

The suit's LZR panels, core stabilizer and bonded seams all combine to reduce drag.

Here is how Speedo describes the suit: "Made from an ultra lightweight, low drag, water repellent, and fast-drying fabric unique to Speedo called LZR PULSEā„¢, the LZR RA...

Luis Yanez hard to believe

10:10 AM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

I eagerly watched as Dale Hansen interviewed Duncanville boxer Luis Yanez Tuesday night on the News 8 Update.

Yanez, the captain of the U.S. Olympic team, was kicked off by his coach after failing to show for training.

The 106-pound light flyweight was booted for skipping three weeks of training without getting permission or even telling USA Boxing where he was, national team coach Dan Campbell claims.

The Pan Americ...

Wind nullifies 100-meter record

2:10 PM Mon, Jun 30, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

So sprinters can get penalized because of a tailwind?

Never hear that one before, but Tyson Gay is familiar with it now.

His time of 9.68 seconds at the U.S. Olympic trials yesterday doesn't count as a world record, because it was run with the help of a too-strong tailwind.

However, Gay qualified for his first Olympic team.

"It means a lot to me," the 25-year-old said. "I'm glad my body could do it, because now...

Athletes look to Viagra for boost

2:40 PM Fri, Jun 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

In an attempt to get a competitive edge and avoid banned substances, some athletes may be using the little blue pill for a boost in performance. That's performance on the filed, court, ice, track, etc., not in the bedroom.

Iraq disbands national soccer team

3:43 PM Thu, Jun 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

From the Associated Press:

BAGHDAD -- It was less than a year ago that Iraqis poured
into the streets in a rare show of unity and celebration after the
national soccer team won the prestigious Asian Cup.

Celebratory gunfire roared across Baghdad and other cities. A
beaming Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki later awarded each team
member a $10,000 bonus and held a homecoming celebration filled

SMU swimming coaches headed to Beijing

10:42 AM Thu, Jun 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Swimming head coaches Steve Collins (women's) and Eddie Sinnott (men's) are both going to the Olympics.

Collins, who has been at SMU for 22 years, will be the head coach of the Slovakian national team for the fourth time, while Sinnott, at SMU for 18 years, will be an assistant team leader for the U.S. team.

Sinnott leaves June 27 for Omaha, Neb. and the U.S. Olympic trials.

There, he will watch the best swimmers in ...

Two former Horned Frogs going to Olympics

11:43 AM Tue, Jun 24, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former TCU Horned Frogs Virgil Hodge and Delwayne Delaney placed first overall in both the 100 and 200 meters for women and men, respectively, at the St. Kitts National Track & Field Championship and Olympic Qualifier this weekend.

Hodge will represent St. Kitts in both events in Beijing. She ran the 100 meters in 11.39 seconds to place first overall. In the 200 meters, the six-time All-American crossed the finish line in 22.87 second...

2:28 PM Mon, Jun 23, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Maverick Jason Kidd and Dallas native Chris Bosh are on the U.S. Olympic basketball team.

With the Dallasites are NBA MVP Kobe Bryant, going to his first Olympics, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Boozer, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Michael Redd and Deron Williams.

The dozen will take a U.S. Olympic basketball to Beijing in August. They'll look to win gold after a third-place showing in...
