Gortat close to becoming a Mav

4:02 PM Fri, Jul 03, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Orlando gets 7 days to match Dallas' contract offer, but it's unlikely the Magic will for a guy who will play behind Dwight Howard. Reports are the Mavericks are offering Gortat a 5-year deal for the mid-level exception (I'm reading that's somewhere between $5.5 and $5.8 million per year).

Gortat's numbers aren't very impressive, but mostly because of this number: minutes per game. He averged only 12.6 as Howard's back-up. Season numb...

Orlando's Gortat coming to Dallas?

4:53 PM Thu, Jul 02, 2009 |

This from espn.com's Mark Stein. He also says that the Mavericks will likely re-sign Jason Kidd, but the Knicks will make a 3-year offer of their own.

Report: Mavs offer Kidd 3-year deal

2:31 PM Wed, Jul 01, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

UPDATED:

The Dallas Mavericks want Jason Kidd and are, apparently, willing to pay him well over $25 million over the next three years.

The Mavs have offered Kidd a three-year deal, according to ESPN.

However, ESPN says Kidd, 36, may be seeking more money.

It's likely, according to reports, that Kidd will expect $10 million or...

Daniels officially on the free agent market

3:10 PM Mon, Jun 29, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

Maybe it's the younger Mav fan in me or maybe it's because he is tied to the Mavericks rise to success earlier this decade. Or maybe it's after they traded him, the Mavs haven't quite had the same success. I know Marquis Daniels isn't solely responsible for all three of the aforementioned, but, personally, I want to see Marquis Daniels back in a Mavs uniform in 2009-2010.

The Indiana Pacers declined the $7.3 million option on Daniels t...

New Mav representing France...with style

2:17 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

Today, the WFAA sports team and I were at the Dallas Mavericks press conference to meet the team's new additions, Rodrigue Beaubois (a.k.a. Roddie) and Ahmad Nivins. What was interesting about Roddie was when he was waiving France's flag via his clothing style.

He took the look and term of the french cuff to a whole new level. If you took a gand...

Mavs executed their plan in draft

12:46 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks introduced two of their three players acquired in the NBA Draft to the media Friday.

The Mavs originally had the 22nd pick, but traded that to Portland for the 24th and 56th picks. Then the Mavs drafted B.J. Mullens at 24, but traded him to Oklahoma City for their 25th pick and a future second-round pick.

They knew what they were doing all along.

Instead of the one pick (22) the Mavs came into the...

Mavs draft trade: good, bad or indifferent?

1:12 PM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Ted Madden

I said yesterday that the Dallas Mavericks trade with Portland seemed too good to be true: Mavs give up 2 spots in the first round (dropping from 22 to 24), and gain a 2nd round pick this year and 2nd round pick next year. On the way home from work last night, and again on the way to work today, I heard a couple of different radio shows talking about how the trade basically meant nothing. Hosts from both shows said that there is no way that th...

Dirk Nowitzki reveals more about ex

9:38 AM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki didn't want to talk about his ex-fiance, Cristal Taylor (or whatever it really is), when he was in Dallas, but he is talking with another German magazine, including shedding new details about the relationship like that Taylor told him her name was Christian Trevino.

The article titled "In Love with a Fraud" ap...

Mavs trade draft picks

5:01 PM Wed, Jun 24, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Just got this from the Dallas Mavericks PR office: Mavs trade their 22nd overall pick to Portland, and receive the 24th and 56th overall picks, plus another 2nd round pick in 2010. It sounds too good to be true; I actually e-mailed a friend of mine with the Mavs to clarify. Hard to believe the Mavericks get two additional picks and only have to drop down two spots in the first round. Then again, I'm no NBA draft expert.

Here's the news...

Mavs hosting draft party

Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks are inviting all you MFFL to enjoy a free watch party for the NBA Draft.
It all happens Thursday starting at 6 p.m. at the Chili's at the American Airlines Center.

Here's more from the Mavs:

On Thursday, June 25th, the Mavs will host a Draft Party for Mavs fans at the Chili's located on the AT&T Plaza at American Airlines Center. Fans can come out to watch the Draft and see who the Mavs select wi...

Weak NBA draft shouldn't mean boring offseason

4:39 PM Fri, Jun 19, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

We're less than a week away from the 2009 NBA Draft, and analysts continue to label the class of 2009 as "weak." This class certainly isn't as strong as the class of 2003, and it's doubtful any class ever will be, but there are still lots of players who can help teams who are just one or two pieces away from winning a championship.

That, coupled with the potential shuffling of lots of big name players, should make sure that the 2009 o...

Mark Cuban: Not interested in buying Cubs

4:04 PM Fri, Jun 19, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Mark Cuban still isn't planning on buying the Chicago Cubs.

The Dallas Mavericks owner told ESPN he has "no plans to get back in the mix" for the Cubbies.

A few days ago I heard Cuban say similar things on a radio show. He said the move didn't make financial sense for him at this time.

Mavs re-up with radio home

4:09 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

From the Dallas Mavericks:

Irving, TX - 103.3 ESPN and the Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have agreed to a four-year extension of their radio play-by-play agreement. 103.3 ESPN, which debuted in April 2001, has broadcast Mavs games since the 2001-02 season, and the network and team will now be together through 2012-13. In that time, the Mavericks have had a team record 9 years of 50 plus wins and made it to the NBA Finals ...

Wash now dean of local coaches

4:48 PM Wed, Jun 10, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Ron Washington, the guy who is about to be fired about every May, who has only been the Rangers manager for a little more than two and a half years and whose winning percentage is .490 is now the longest tenured coach of a pro sports team in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Ron Washington. I know, I'm having a hard time believing it too. Nothing against Washington, I like him. But he still seems like the new guy and now he's the old pro.

Grading our local play-by-play guys

12:52 PM Sun, May 17, 2009 |
David Marcus

Listening to ballgames on the radio as a kid and watching on television first got me interested in sportscasting. I was as much a fan of the guys behind the mic as I was the players on the field or the court. I remember listening to my tiny transistor radio under the covers late at night whenever the Rangers were playing on the West Coast, even though I should have been asleep getting ready for school the next day.

I've been doing noth...

Karl: Mavs fans had 'racist mentality'

12:00 PM Fri, May 15, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl was not happy with the way his team was treated by the fans in Dallas during Games 3 and 4 of their playoff series.

Karl told Dan Patrick on his radio show that Mavs fans went beyond just creating a hostile sporting environment, to using racial language.

"I felt it crossed the line," Karl said. "There was a racist mentality to it. There was a fighting mentality to it. It was to the point w...

Now, let's play Mavericks GM

3:27 PM Thu, May 14, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

What's next for the Dallas Mavericks? Well, the obvious answer after last night is: the offseason. But more importantly, the draft and free agency. It was obvious in the Denver series this team needs more athleticism and a little more scoring in the starting lineup. But, what's out there? Here is a list of players that I have put on my wish list:

Raymond Felton - they went after him in the Charlotte trade, would like to see him in a Ma...

What did we learn about the Mavs?

2:53 PM Thu, May 14, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

With the Mavs season coming to a close last night, we learned a few things about this latest installment of the Dallas Mavericks.

1. They showed more grit and heart than previous Mavs teams - they were never completely out of any game, Denver was just the better team and usually, like this series, it shows over the course of 7 games, or in this case 5.

2. This is still a jump-shooting team - when it comes down to it, this team ...

Dirk Nowitzki's 'exit' interview

2:46 PM Thu, May 14, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dirk Nowtizki had a lot to say in a wide-ranging media session this afternoon.

It's been a busy week and a half to for the Mavericks All-NBA forward.

There was the playoff series with Denver and the arrest of his girlfriend, Cristal Taylor.

Here is some of what he had to say:

On the Nuggets series:
"Denver was just a way better team with way more weapons."

"At this point I don't play for ma...

Mavericks season over after loss

10:48 PM Wed, May 13, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

For a sixth-seed in the NBA playoffs the Dallas Mavericks didn't do too bad.

That's no consolation after Wednesday's 124-110 loss to the Denver Nuggets in their second-round playoff series. The Nuggets won the series 4-1.

Mavs fans got spoiled by the Mavs mostly impressive series win over the third-seeded San Antonio Spurs. The second-seeded Nuggets were a different story.

While the Spurs were old and staid, the Nugget...

Jason Terry was the award the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award for his work coming off the bench for the Mavs.

Mavs season likely ends tonight

4:11 PM Wed, May 13, 2009 |
David Marcus

Come on....you're thinking it too.

The Mavs did put up an heroic effort on Monday night, virtually willed to victory by Dirk Nowitzki in one of the gutsier performances of his career. Dirk was rewarded for his regular season efforts today by being named First Team All-NBA, very well deserved.

But Dallas is up against it tonight, going back inside the lair of the lion. The Nuggets have won 15 straight games at the Pepsi Center...

Dirk named to first team all-NBA

1:16 PM Wed, May 13, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has been named to the all-NBA first-team. It's the fourth time Dirk's been named to the first team.

He averaged nearly 26 points per game (4th in the league) to go with 8.4 rebounds, and I don't know if you realized this or not (I didn't): Dirk scored 20 points or more in 25 straight games to close out the season.

Birdman says he's better

5:40 PM Tue, May 12, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

From the Associated Press:

Chris "Birdman" Andersen says he's fully recovered from a bout of food poisoning that kept him out of the Denver Nuggets' 119-117 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Andersen said he ate something bad at the team hotel Monday and spent the game in the locker room suffering from severe abdominal cramps and vomiting.

The Nuggets sorely missed their energetic center as Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki ...

Kidd convinced Terry to miss last second free throw

11:56 AM Tue, May 12, 2009 |
George Riba

Jason Kidd spent part of his time on the court last night convincing Jason Terry to miss a free throw in the final second of the game. Kidd wanted Terry to make the first, but knew the Nuggets would have a tough time scoring a basket in the final second.

"His whole concept was hey we can't lose the game, and I kept saying, no we're going to win. Just miss it," Kidd said after the game.

Terry made the first to give Dallas a two...

Cuban apologizes to Martin's mom

10:02 AM Tue, May 12, 2009 |

The bizarre feud between Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the mother of Denver Nuggets player Kenyon Martin may be over.

It all started after that dramatic loss in Game 3 at the AAC.

Martin's agent told the Denver Post that Cuban said, "Your son is a punk."

Dallas Mavericks-Denver Nuggets Game 4 post-game notes from the Dallas Mavericks:

NOTES

* Dirk Nowitzki recorded his 5th career playoff game with 40 points. He finished tonight with 44 points (14-25 FGs, postseason-highs 16-17 FTs) and 13 rebounds (12 DR) in 44 minutes. Th...

Mavericks beat Nuggets 119-117 to extend series

11:31 PM Mon, May 11, 2009 |
George Riba

The Mavericks faced a series sweep against the Nuggets tonight and responded with a win 119-to-117. It was their first win in the series and the first of the season against Denver. Dallas still trails 3-1 in the series. No team in NBA history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit

Dirk Nowitzki was a clutch player down the stretch. His 14-footer with 1:05 left in the game gave Dallas the lead for good. He scored 6 points in the final 1...

Mavericks finish third quarter but still short

10:33 PM Mon, May 11, 2009 |
George Riba

The Mavericks were able to overcome an 8-0 Denver run late in the third quarter to tie the game at 85-all. But they went cold after that to trail the Nuggets by 5 at the half, 90-to-85.

JJ Barea provided a spark for Dallas with a pair of layups, the first on an assit by Dirk Nowitzki. His second tied the game at 85 all.

Carmelo Anthony scored 14 for Denver in the third quater to give him 32 for the night.

The Nuggets sh...

Dallas facing elimination trails at the half

10:11 PM Mon, May 11, 2009 |
George Riba

The Mavericks made a decent run in the second quater and cut Denver's lead down to five. But silly turnovers and technical fouls allowed the Nuggets to take a 10-point lead into the half 63-to-53.

Dallas got two type 1 flagrant fouls in the quarter, one on Josh Howard and a second on Jason Terry. If you get two type 1 flagrants in one game, the player is ejected.

Denver's hot hand has cooled from 72 percent in the first quarter...

Mavericks off to terrible start

9:47 PM Mon, May 11, 2009 |
George Riba

Any thought that Dallas might respond and actually win a game in this series is already in serious doubt.

Denver shot 72-percent from the field, hitting 5 of 6 three pointers to take a 34-to-23 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Denver looked like they could do whatever they wanted, with four slams in the first quarter alone.

It looks like it will be a long night and short series.

Mavs ready to move on

1:14 PM Mon, May 11, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

It's been only 2 days since the controversial ending at the American Airlines Center Saturday night in game 3. After all the talk about foul or not (In my opinion, it was a foul) the Mavs know they can't let that affect them going into game 4.

We'll see tonight how much fight this team has left. They've shown much resolve since the 2-7 start, or the 4-game losing streak in January, but this, by far is their toughest challenge of the ye...

Refs not why Mavs lost Game 3

9:42 AM Mon, May 11, 2009 |
Dale Hansen

There's so many things wrong about the final seconds of the Mavericks game Saturday I almost don't know where to begin.

So let's begin here: One of the biggest mistakes that came out of that game is the NBA admitting they made one .

The league says they made a mistake and missed a foul that should have been called.

What about the other 46 they didn't call in Denver? Or the two dozen or so they called Saturday? I

Mavericks say NBA apology made them feel worse

9:28 PM Sun, May 10, 2009 |
George Riba

The few Mavericks players that were available today still appeared to be in a state of shock after that game three loss to the Nuggets on Saturday.

The league's apology for referees not calling an intentional foul in the final seconds did little to make them feel better about the loss.

"I don't think it makes anybody feel better," says Mavericks Forward Dirk Nowitzki. "We don't get the last seven seconds back to play it over ag...

The Biggest Loser: Mavs Edition

8:58 PM Sun, May 10, 2009 |

Who exactly was the biggest loser in the Dallas Mavericks heartbreaking last second loss to the Denver Nuggets?

By the way, in case you haven't heard, Nuggets 106 - Mavericks 105. The Mavericks are now one game away from being swept in this best of seven series and eliminated from NBA post season play. Aside from the final tally on the scoreboard, was there yet a larger loser on the floor? Here are my choices for you or if you ...

Mavericks can't cry over spilt milk

11:20 PM Sat, May 09, 2009 |

In the blink of an eye, the Mavs went from being very much alive in their playoff series with Denver....to being just about dead.

That's life in the NBA postseason, where fates and fortunes often hang by a delicate thread.

The Mavs can complain all they want about the blown call in the final seconds and they'd be correct. The NBA has already agreed that the intentional foul by Antoine Wright should have been called and the Nugg...

Mavs lose shocker, 106-105

6:57 PM Sat, May 09, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks have had a bizarre week and it got even stranger Saturday afternoon.

Down 2-0 in their playoff series with the Denver Nuggets, the Mavericks faced essentially a must-win game in their best of seven series.

No NBA team has ever won a playoff series when down 3-0. The Mavs looked like they would win the game, controlling most of the fourth quarter.

But Carmelo Anthony hit a three-pointer with one sec...

Mavericks lose game three to Nuggets

6:36 PM Sat, May 09, 2009 |
George Riba

Carmelo Anthony's three pointer with 1-second left gives Denver a 3-0 lead in their best of seven series against Dallas. The final was 106-to-105 Denver.

Jason Terry's three pointer with 31.1 seconds left in the game gave Dallas a 105-to-101 lead but it wasn't enough.

Denver didn't have the inside presence that they had in games one and two but they made the outside shot when it counted most. Chris Andersen fouled out with 9:09...

Mavericks battle back to lead after three quarters

5:58 PM Sat, May 09, 2009 |
George Riba

The Mavericks showed a little spark in the third quarter to take a one point lead 80-to-79 with one quarter to go.

Dallas was down by as much as 6-points, but took the lead at 68-to-67.

Dirk Nowitzki added another 8-points in the quarter to give him 29 for the game. Josh Howard has 11, Jason Kidd has 10 and Brandon Bass has 11 as four Mavericks players are in double figures.

Dallas is still shooting just 40 percent from...

Mavericks trail Nuggets at half

5:19 PM Sat, May 09, 2009 |
George Riba

The first half wasn't exactly what the Mavericks wanted against the Nuggets. While they had first quartesr success inside, they're still shooting just 36 percent to trail Denver 48-to-45 at the half.

Denver, which shot just 25 percent in the first quarter, is now shooting 33 percent. It's enough to give them a 3-point lead.

The Nuggets took the lead for the first time at 35-to-33 as part of a 9-0 run. Chris Anderson spent lot's...
