Historic coach hiring

6:55 PM Wed, Nov 04, 2009 |
Arnold Payne

Nancy Lieberman, once the recipient of the Wade's Trophy, given to the nation's outstanding women's collegiate basketball player will be named as the first female head coach of the NBA Development League. The hiring of Lieberman as the new head coach of the Frisco NBA Development League franchise will mark the historic first of a female head coach in either the NBA or NBA D-League.

Team owners Donnie Nelson and Evan Wyly will make th...

Dallas Mavericks drop opener 102-to-91

9:58 PM Tue, Oct 27, 2009 |
George Riba

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to be a good team once they get all their players on the floor, but tonight, their start to the season wasn't as good as they hoped.

Dirk Nowitzki looked like a one man show at times as he scored points 34 points, but it wasn't enough. The Washington Wizards won the season opener 102-to-91.

Shawn Marion's debut in a Dallas uniform produced 16-points, but he got into foul trouble early. Drew Go...

Dallas Mavericks kick off 2009 season

7:43 PM Tue, Oct 27, 2009 |
George Riba

The Dallas Mavericks kicked off another season at the American Airlines tonight. Brue Hornsby played the national anthem which was a nice treat. He had a Steinway Piano at center court.

Before tipoff, forward Shawn Marion grabbed the microphone to tell Mavericks fans that the team needed their support this season but he really wanted to wish everyone a Happy Halloween. You might have guessed, he's not very shy.

Quinton Ross s...

Replacement refs starting to seem like a reality

1:55 PM Fri, Oct 02, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

With the referees rejecting the NBA's latest proposal on their labor contract dispute Sunday afternoon, players and coaches for the Dallas Mavericks are mentally preparing for the lockout to extend into the regular season.

"It's really tough," said Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki after practice on Tuesday. "Hopefully they can still reach an agreement. I think our refs are the best in the world and the best in the business so we would love to h...

No more Twitter for Tech players, still okay for the Mavs

6:06 PM Mon, Sep 28, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

From now on, it will be a 15-yard penalty for Texas Tech players that use Twitter. Odd and often misunderstood Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach has put a ban on his players using Twitter. This comes days after the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that linebacker Marlon Williams asked on his Twitter account why he was still in a meeting room when "the head coach can't even be on time." Williams Twitter page is no longer available.

Shawn Marion: "I'm a better basketball player than I was before"

4:16 PM Thu, Sep 24, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Shawn Marion's production has dropped over the last few years. While he is getting older, the unfamiliarity in moving to two new cities could be partly the reason why his numbers are down. Could a stint in Dallas, where his status is not in limbo, be what Marion needs to get back to the player he was?

"I was used to Phoenix for eight and a half years. I was used to one thing. The city, the environment, the fans, changing is not someth...

From Dallas Mavericks:

DALLAS -The Dallas Mavericks announced that forward Tim Thomas underwent arthroscopic surgery today to repair torn cartilage in his right knee. Mavericks' team physician Dr. T.O. Souryal performed the surgery at Texas Sports Medicine. A timetable for his return has not been set.

Monta Ellis/Stephen Jackson rumors to Dallas

4:18 PM Mon, Aug 31, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

While there were a lot of rumors swirling around the Internet this weekend about Stephen Jackson coming to the Mavericks, the more logical idea would be the Warriors dumping Monta Ellis' contract into the lap of Mark Cuban.

Ellis is slated to make 11 million dollars over the next four seasons, with a player option for a fifth. At 23 years old, his four year career average is 16.1 ppg. When the Warriors drafted Stephen Curry with the ...

Matt Carroll's days in Dallas done?

3:13 PM Thu, Aug 20, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

According to HoopsWorld.com and HoopsHype.com, the Dallas Mavericks are working on a trade with the Toronto Raptors to send shooting guard Matt Carroll north for veteran Marcus Banks. The move would be strictly a financial one for Dallas.

Carroll, who was acquired from Charlotte for DeSanga Diop last season, has four years left on

Drew Gooden on the way to Dallas

12:52 AM Sun, Jul 26, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

After telling followers to stay tuned for his decision on which team to sign with, center Drew Gooden tweeted "Dallas here I come!!!"

Mark Cuban retweeted Gooden's message and added his own greetings to Gooden.

Sources tell ESPN.com's Mark Stein the deal is for $4.5 million over one year.

No word on if the contract was negotiated through T...

The script to the Nellie-Cuban soap opera

11:44 AM Fri, Jul 24, 2009 |
Ted Madden

If you have the inclination and a few hours, this might be worth a read. It's the arbitration hearing between Don Nelson and the Dallas Mavericks (and owner Mark Cuban). It's 210 pages, about half of which includes testimony of Nellie and Cuban. The Dallas Morning News inquired about the documents earlier this week.

Last summer, a judge rul...

What should the Mavs do now?

3:21 PM Wed, Jul 15, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

The Mavericks missed out on Marcin Gortat, and now they need some front-court help.

They still have Erick Dampier for one more year, but his expiring contract is a big-time trade chip.

Ryan Hollins, who the Mavs picked up last year when they traded DeSagna Diop to Charlotte, is an unrestricted free agent. He's only 25 and has a very br...

Gortat reportedly staying in Orlando

4:15 PM Mon, Jul 13, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the Orlando Magic are prepared to match the Mavericks' offer sheet for center Marcin Gortat.

That means the Magic would retain Gortat, and wouldn't be able to trade him until December.

The Mavericks did not expect the Magic to match their five-year $34 million offer sheet, a...

Marion the Maverick ... do you care?

9:43 PM Thu, Jul 09, 2009 |
Ted Madden

I was golfing with a friend of mine today who has been a Maverick fan since they came into the league. He said the Mavs are about to lose him as a fan. He's not real happy with their off-season moves to this point. I, on the other hand, think Dallas has had a pretty good (not very good, not great), but a pretty good off-season. And I told my friend this - but he said Marion is washed up and everyone else in the West is getting better while the...

Kudos to Cuban, Mavs for Matrix deal

5:00 PM Thu, Jul 09, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

As recently as one week ago the Mavericks were getting roundly criticized for making no offseason moves while rival teams were making trades and getting better.

Throughout all the criticism owner Mark Cuban and GM Donnie Nelson continued repeating what seemed to be the company line that they were executing their plan.

After all the ou...

2:21 PM Thu, Jul 09, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

This is from the Mavericks PR department:

MAVERICKS ACQUIRE FOUR-TIME ALL-STAR SHAWN MARION

DALLAS-- The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they acquired four-time All-Star forward Shawn Marion, forward Kris Humphries, center Nathan Jawai and cash considerations from the Toronto Raptors and guard Greg Buckner from the Memphis Grizzlie...

Mavericks sign Quinton Ross

12:53 PM Wed, Jul 08, 2009 |
George Riba

The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have signed Quinton Ross.

Ross (6-6, 193) joins the Mavericks after spending the 2008-09 season with Memphis. He averaged 3.9 points, 1.9 rebounds and 17.1 minutes in 68 games (seven starts) with the Grizzlies. The five-year NBA veteran, who began his career as a rookie free agent with the L.A. Clippers, owns career averages of 4.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 20.4 minutes in 370 game...

Who is Moussa Seck?

4:34 PM Tue, Jul 07, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

The Mavericks had their summer league's first practice today. Some familiar faces, such as Rodrigue "Roddie" Beaubois and Ahmad Nivins, were present.

There was another figure that stood out in the group, Moussa Seck. He's the 7ft 4in center who traveled all the way from Senegal to take his shot at trying to make the Maverick's roster for next season.

Though the Maverick's can only take one or two out of the 18 players on the t...

Is Marion next for the Mavericks?

3:22 PM Tue, Jul 07, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

It's been a busy NBA offseason and we're only a week into free agency. Players can't officially sign until tomorrow, but numerous players already have new zip codes.

From Richard Jefferson to the Spurs, Vince Carter to the Magic, Shaq to the Cavs and Hedo Turkoglu to the Raptors, contenders (Spurs, Magic and Cavs..nothing against Toronto) seem to be getting stronger. But, alas where is the Mavericks name on this list?

To start,...

Avery Johnson, Pistons can't reach deal

11:17 AM Tue, Jul 07, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson is not going to be the new head coach of the Detroit pistons, according to ESPN.

Johnson, who has been working as an ESPN analyst since being fired in Dallas, could not reach a deal with the Pistons, who only wanted to give him a two-year deal, while Johnson wanted four years, according to ESPN sources.

Mavs seeking big-time ManiAACs

11:53 AM Mon, Jul 06, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks are for some MFFL to be ManiAACs. Start letting yourself go now.

From the Mavs:

The Dallas Mavericks are searching for a few larger-than-life personalities to join the 2009-10 Mavs ManiAACs to make a BIG impression at Mavs home games this season.

Men who are Mavs fanatics, beefy, love to dance and are at least 18 years of age are encouraged to apply. Applicants do not need to bring a routine, as a...

Avery Johnson talking to Pistons

10:12 AM Mon, Jul 06, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Dallas Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson is apparently close to being the next coach of the Detroit Pistons, according to NBA.com.

Johnson would be the 10th coach for the Pistons since Chuck Daly left in 1992, that's less than a two season average per coach.

Avery may want to rent, not buy a home if he ends up getti...

Gortat close to becoming a Mav

4:02 PM Fri, Jul 03, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Orlando gets 7 days to match Dallas' contract offer, but it's unlikely the Magic will for a guy who will play behind Dwight Howard. Reports are the Mavericks are offering Gortat a 5-year deal for the mid-level exception (I'm reading that's somewhere between $5.5 and $5.8 million per year).

Gortat's numbers aren't very impressive, but mostly because of this number: minutes per game. He averged only 12.6 as Howard's back-up. Season numb...

Orlando's Gortat coming to Dallas?

4:53 PM Thu, Jul 02, 2009 |

This from espn.com's Mark Stein. He also says that the Mavericks will likely re-sign Jason Kidd, but the Knicks will make a 3-year offer of their own.

Report: Mavs offer Kidd 3-year deal

2:31 PM Wed, Jul 01, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

UPDATED:

The Dallas Mavericks want Jason Kidd and are, apparently, willing to pay him well over $25 million over the next three years.

The Mavs have offered Kidd a three-year deal, according to ESPN.

However, ESPN says Kidd, 36, may be seeking more money.

It's likely, according to reports, that Kidd will expect $10 million or...

Daniels officially on the free agent market

3:10 PM Mon, Jun 29, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

Maybe it's the younger Mav fan in me or maybe it's because he is tied to the Mavericks rise to success earlier this decade. Or maybe it's after they traded him, the Mavs haven't quite had the same success. I know Marquis Daniels isn't solely responsible for all three of the aforementioned, but, personally, I want to see Marquis Daniels back in a Mavs uniform in 2009-2010.

The Indiana Pacers declined the $7.3 million option on Daniels t...

New Mav representing France...with style

2:17 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

Today, the WFAA sports team and I were at the Dallas Mavericks press conference to meet the team's new additions, Rodrigue Beaubois (a.k.a. Roddie) and Ahmad Nivins. What was interesting about Roddie was when he was waiving France's flag via his clothing style.

He took the look and term of the french cuff to a whole new level. If you took a gand...

Mavs executed their plan in draft

12:46 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks introduced two of their three players acquired in the NBA Draft to the media Friday.

The Mavs originally had the 22nd pick, but traded that to Portland for the 24th and 56th picks. Then the Mavs drafted B.J. Mullens at 24, but traded him to Oklahoma City for their 25th pick and a future second-round pick.

They knew what they were doing all along.

Instead of the one pick (22) the Mavs came into the...

Mavs draft trade: good, bad or indifferent?

1:12 PM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Ted Madden

I said yesterday that the Dallas Mavericks trade with Portland seemed too good to be true: Mavs give up 2 spots in the first round (dropping from 22 to 24), and gain a 2nd round pick this year and 2nd round pick next year. On the way home from work last night, and again on the way to work today, I heard a couple of different radio shows talking about how the trade basically meant nothing. Hosts from both shows said that there is no way that th...

Dirk Nowitzki reveals more about ex

9:38 AM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki didn't want to talk about his ex-fiance, Cristal Taylor (or whatever it really is), when he was in Dallas, but he is talking with another German magazine, including shedding new details about the relationship like that Taylor told him her name was Christian Trevino.

The article titled "In Love with a Fraud" ap...

Mavs trade draft picks

5:01 PM Wed, Jun 24, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Just got this from the Dallas Mavericks PR office: Mavs trade their 22nd overall pick to Portland, and receive the 24th and 56th overall picks, plus another 2nd round pick in 2010. It sounds too good to be true; I actually e-mailed a friend of mine with the Mavs to clarify. Hard to believe the Mavericks get two additional picks and only have to drop down two spots in the first round. Then again, I'm no NBA draft expert.

Here's the news...

Mavs hosting draft party

10:52 AM Tue, Jun 23, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks are inviting all you MFFL to enjoy a free watch party for the NBA Draft.
It all happens Thursday starting at 6 p.m. at the Chili's at the American Airlines Center.

Here's more from the Mavs:

On Thursday, June 25th, the Mavs will host a Draft Party for Mavs fans at the Chili's located on the AT&T Plaza at American Airlines Center. Fans can come out to watch the Draft and see who the Mavs select wi...

Weak NBA draft shouldn't mean boring offseason

4:39 PM Fri, Jun 19, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

We're less than a week away from the 2009 NBA Draft, and analysts continue to label the class of 2009 as "weak." This class certainly isn't as strong as the class of 2003, and it's doubtful any class ever will be, but there are still lots of players who can help teams who are just one or two pieces away from winning a championship.

That, coupled with the potential shuffling of lots of big name players, should make sure that the 2009 o...

Mark Cuban: Not interested in buying Cubs

4:04 PM Fri, Jun 19, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Mark Cuban still isn't planning on buying the Chicago Cubs.

The Dallas Mavericks owner told ESPN he has "no plans to get back in the mix" for the Cubbies.

A few days ago I heard Cuban say similar things on a radio show. He said the move didn't make financial sense for him at this time.

Mavs re-up with radio home

4:09 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

From the Dallas Mavericks:

Irving, TX - 103.3 ESPN and the Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have agreed to a four-year extension of their radio play-by-play agreement. 103.3 ESPN, which debuted in April 2001, has broadcast Mavs games since the 2001-02 season, and the network and team will now be together through 2012-13. In that time, the Mavericks have had a team record 9 years of 50 plus wins and made it to the NBA Finals ...

Wash now dean of local coaches

4:48 PM Wed, Jun 10, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Ron Washington, the guy who is about to be fired about every May, who has only been the Rangers manager for a little more than two and a half years and whose winning percentage is .490 is now the longest tenured coach of a pro sports team in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Ron Washington. I know, I'm having a hard time believing it too. Nothing against Washington, I like him. But he still seems like the new guy and now he's the old pro.

Grading our local play-by-play guys

12:52 PM Sun, May 17, 2009 |
David Marcus

Listening to ballgames on the radio as a kid and watching on television first got me interested in sportscasting. I was as much a fan of the guys behind the mic as I was the players on the field or the court. I remember listening to my tiny transistor radio under the covers late at night whenever the Rangers were playing on the West Coast, even though I should have been asleep getting ready for school the next day.

I've been doing noth...

Karl: Mavs fans had 'racist mentality'

12:00 PM Fri, May 15, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl was not happy with the way his team was treated by the fans in Dallas during Games 3 and 4 of their playoff series.

Karl told Dan Patrick on his radio show that Mavs fans went beyond just creating a hostile sporting environment, to using racial language.

"I felt it crossed the line," Karl said. "There was a racist mentality to it. There was a fighting mentality to it. It was to the point w...

Now, let's play Mavericks GM

3:27 PM Thu, May 14, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

What's next for the Dallas Mavericks? Well, the obvious answer after last night is: the offseason. But more importantly, the draft and free agency. It was obvious in the Denver series this team needs more athleticism and a little more scoring in the starting lineup. But, what's out there? Here is a list of players that I have put on my wish list:

Raymond Felton - they went after him in the Charlotte trade, would like to see him in a Ma...

What did we learn about the Mavs?

2:53 PM Thu, May 14, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

With the Mavs season coming to a close last night, we learned a few things about this latest installment of the Dallas Mavericks.

1. They showed more grit and heart than previous Mavs teams - they were never completely out of any game, Denver was just the better team and usually, like this series, it shows over the course of 7 games, or in this case 5.

2. This is still a jump-shooting team - when it comes down to it, this team ...

Dirk Nowitzki's 'exit' interview

2:46 PM Thu, May 14, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dirk Nowtizki had a lot to say in a wide-ranging media session this afternoon.

It's been a busy week and a half to for the Mavericks All-NBA forward.

There was the playoff series with Denver and the arrest of his girlfriend, Cristal Taylor.

Here is some of what he had to say:

On the Nuggets series:
"Denver was just a way better team with way more weapons."

"At this point I don't play for ma...

Mavericks season over after loss

10:48 PM Wed, May 13, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

For a sixth-seed in the NBA playoffs the Dallas Mavericks didn't do too bad.

That's no consolation after Wednesday's 124-110 loss to the Denver Nuggets in their second-round playoff series. The Nuggets won the series 4-1.

Mavs fans got spoiled by the Mavs mostly impressive series win over the third-seeded San Antonio Spurs. The second-seeded Nuggets were a different story.

While the Spurs were old and staid, the Nugget...

Mavs season likely ends tonight

4:11 PM Wed, May 13, 2009 |
David Marcus

Come on....you're thinking it too.

The Mavs did put up an heroic effort on Monday night, virtually willed to victory by Dirk Nowitzki in one of the gutsier performances of his career. Dirk was rewarded for his regular season efforts today by being named First Team All-NBA, very well deserved.

But Dallas is up against it tonight, going back inside the lair of the lion. The Nuggets have won 15 straight games at the Pepsi Center...
