Jason Kidd Says His Latest Gold Medal Is On Loan

2:21 PM Fri, Sep 05, 2008 |
George Riba

I was in Arizona a couple of weeks ago and saw in the Arizona Republic that Mavericks Forward Jason Kidd was going to give away his Olympic Gold Medal. Word, at the time, was that Kidd would give his Gold Medal to Elaine Wynn, the wife of Casino owner Steve Wynn. Kidd called her a friend and a really great person.
Well as good as that sounded for her, it was a little too good to be true. Today, Kidd was a guest on the Musers on the Tic...

Some of the best basketball players not in Beijing will be in Desoto Saturday for a softball tournament, all benefiting the Josh Howard Foundation.

Celebrities slated to participate include Mavs guard Jason Terry, Kenyon Martin (Denver Nuggets), Tracy McGrady (Houston Rockets), Greg Buckner (Memphis Grizzlies), Rosci (106 & Park), DMC (Run DMC) and Derek Harper (former Mavs guard), among others.

Dallas Mavericks forward Josh H...

Josh Smith a Mav?

3:42 PM Tue, Jul 22, 2008 |
Nick Zelinski

You know it's the off-season when the Dallas Mavericks are involved in numerous trade rumors. Last week, there was speculation Ron Artest would be next to don the white, blue and black. All the Mavs would have to give up in exchange was Josh Howard and most likely Brandon Bass.

Well, another week and another rumor. This time it's Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith. This is another deal that would involve Josh Howard. We all heard after H...

Big deals on Mavs swag

5:01 PM Fri, Jul 18, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

If you're longing for the days of three-pointers and rebounds, the Dallas Mavericks want to get you all decked out for basketball season, and at a deep discount.

The Mavs are hosting their summer warehouse blow-out sale at the AAC Saturday.

And it is a sale. Hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jerseys, jackets and warm-ups will be priced 50-80 percent off the wholesale price.

But the real question is will there be some really ...

Mavs should trade Howard for Artest

9:37 AM Fri, Jul 18, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks' Josh Howard and Sacramento Kings' Ron Artest are the same age, 28.

Both have been All-Stars.

Last season, they averaged very similar statistics, Howard with 19.9 points, 7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game and Artest with 20.5, 5.8 and 3.5. If you total them with steals and blocks per game Howard has 30.3 and Artest 32.8. That's what I like to compare, their total contributions. Artest has an edge. He als...

Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks have signed guard Keith McLeod and forward James Singleton.

McLeod (6-2, 190) was a member of Montepaschi Siena, the winner of the Italian National Championship in 2007-08. In four games, he averaged 4.5 points, 0.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 14.4 minutes in Euroleague play. The four-year pro has played with four NBA teams (Minnesota, Utah, Golden State and Indiana) and holds career averages of 5.5 points, 2.7...

Mavericks re-sign Wright

Aaron Chimbel

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks have re-signed former Texas
A&M standout Antoine Wright.

Terms of the deal with the guard weren't released Friday.

Wright played two seasons with New Jersey before he was acquired
by the Mavs on Feb. 19 as part of the deal that also brought Jason
Kidd to Dallas.

New Jersey took Wright with the 15th pick in the 2005 NBA draft.

Wright last...

Gerald Green on the Ticket

10:04 AM Thu, Jul 10, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I just heard new Maverick Gerald Green on the Ticket with Norm. He's saying all the right things, about being humbled and hungry and ready to "re-launch" his career. Watch my story here

One thing he said on Norm's show that concerned me a bit - Green said he's always been a hard worker, first in the gym and the last to leave. He said he stayed that way despite getti...

Heat add 3-point shooter Jones

12:25 PM Wed, Jul 09, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Mavericks won't be signing one 6-8 swingman and three-point threat.

MIAMI (AP) -- James Jones has signed a five-year contract with
the Miami Heat, giving the swingman an opportunity to play for his
hometown team starting next season.

Jones, a South Florida native who played at the University of
Miami, made 291 shots from 3-point range over the past three
seasons while playing for Phoen...

General to oversee NBA refs

12:24 PM Tue, Jul 01, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Next time Dick Bavetta makes a bad call he may have to drop and give Ronald L. Johnson 20.

Johnson was named the NBA's senior vice president of referee operations today. He just retired as an Army major general after 32 years as a combat engineer.

He was hired to oversee officiating after the Tim Donaghy scandal. Donaghy is accused of misconduct, including helping the league manipulate playoff results in 2002 and '05.

Mavs fail to make big splash in draft

9:43 AM Fri, Jun 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

For all the talk of the Dallas Mavericks wanting to make a big move in the NBA draft, GM Donnie Nelson, owner Mark Cuban and new coach Rick Carlisle stayed with just the 51st pick.

They are, per usual, lauding their pick of 6-6 shooting guard Shan Foster from Vanderbilt. If,at the 51st pick,he ever sees the court for the Mavs, he'll be a good pick. Sure the Mavs brass is saying all the right things now about he was target of theirs, ca...

Mavs need to be dealing like Blazers

12:33 PM Wed, Jun 25, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks have the 51st pick in tomorrow's NBA draft, that's near the bottom of the second round. They have no first round pick because of the Jason Kidd trade and have a roster full of old players.

Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers, according to The Associated Press, have acquired New Orleans first pick (#27) for cash.

Some perspective: The Mavs drafted Josh Howard at 29 in 2003.

The Blazers have a you...

New Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle is back from visiting Dirk Nowitzki in Germany and he has a new appreciation for how the forward learned basketball.

One nugget: A linoleum basketball court.

Mavs introduce Carlisle

4:47 PM Wed, May 14, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I thought it was very interesting how Rick Carlisle began his press conference today. In his opening comments, he expressed his appreciation to ESPN for getting a chance to work with them for the past year. Carlisle also said this about his one year at ESPN: "It is the gold standard in sports, and for me, the greatest sports organization I've been a part of, until today."

Here's the thing: have you EVER heard of a current coach or athl...

New Coach For The Mavericks Will Be Different, Or Maybe Not!

7:08 PM Wed, Apr 30, 2008 |
George Riba

For the second straight year, the Mavericks left the American Airlines Center having been eliminated from the playoffs in the first round.

While the speculation begins as to who will become the Mavericks next Head Coach, we know one man who we can strike off the list, Mavericks Guard Jerry Stackhouse. Asked whether the next Head Coach of the team is already on the staff, Stackhouse replied.
"I have no idea about that. It would b...

Making a Statement

6:50 PM Wed, Apr 30, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

A light moment on a tough day for the Mavs at their expense.

Today at the AAC, I was among some 35 media types all gathered around, waiting for Donnie Nelson to come out and talk to us. A P.R. person came out and told us that Nelson would be out in a moment, make a statement, and take no questions.

One of the photographers then quipped from behind the cameras...

"Statment, heck I been waiting for this team to make a s...

Avery fired

2:00 PM Wed, Apr 30, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

No shocker after the Mavs first round playoff exit for the second year in a row, but Avery Johnson was fired as coach Wednesday.

Read the story

Did he deserve to get fired? Well, the team had gotten progressively worse under him. From the Finals collapse two years ago to the great regular season last year followed by th...

Mavs Counter Punch

7:39 PM Tue, Apr 29, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

Game 5 In-game report:

The Mavs trailed by 11 in the 1st quarter, came back to tie it. Then down 15 at the half, they cut the lead to 6 in the third quarter, so they're showing some fight, but not sure if they've got enough bullets in the gun.

David West is hitting key bucket after key bucket, shooting 10-15 for a game high 23 points through three quarters.

Not looking good for the MFFLers.
