Ennis Coach Sam Herrell has MS

5:33 PM Wed, Jun 24, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Brandon George just posted this story on the hsgametime.com website. Coach Harrell says in the story that he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis four years ago, but didn't tell anyone with the exception of his wife and their parents until now.

Sam has always been gracious and friendly in our many interactions over ...

Rangers top draft pick might be easy to sign

11:17 AM Wed, Jun 10, 2009 |
George Riba

If you're wondering why the Texas Rangers were able to draft left handed pitcher Matthew Purke while others shied away, it might be because of his representation.

No it's not Scott Boras, but instead it's Sports Select Group (SSG) based in Houston. SSG became a partner of the Sanders Morris Harris Group (SMHG) in December 2004. Part owner of SMH...

Southlake Carroll has a new AD

1:29 PM Wed, May 13, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Kevin Ozee will take over as AD at Southlake Carroll. Ronnie Tipps retired from the position a couple of months ago. Ozee has been in the news recently after he suspended seven Duncanville track and field athletes for competing in a meet independently, after the school decided not to p...

The University Interscholastic League released this just a little while ago....

AUSTIN, TX-- UIL interscholastic competitions may resume on Thursday May 7, the UIL announced Wednesday. Based on Texas Education Agency and Department of State Health Services recommendations that all schools across the state of Texas reopen, the UIL has relaxe...

Swine flu's effect on track and field

4:14 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |
Ted Madden

We just got back from Rowlett High School, where track and field coach David Nanez had a meeting with his athletes, at which he told them that the regional track meet was cancelled.

A new report has just come out that the University Interscholastic League (UIL) is re-thinking that stance. You can read about it here.

So the good news...

2:39 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |
George Riba

The executive committee of the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) which consists of 18 schools in Texas and Oklahoma has decided to follow the lead by the UIL and cancel it's athletic events this week.

SPC was scheduled to hold its state track meet at Greenhill School Thursday and Friday, but that event has been canceled.

The SPC head of school and athletic directors will meet to decide further action.

J.D.Mayo Says He's Still a Company Man

10:16 PM Fri, Apr 03, 2009 |
George Riba

I spent a few hours at Skyline High School today, well actually outside since Schools are on lockdown during the day. I met J.D. Mayo away from the campus to talk about his release as the school's basketball coach. You'll never meet a nicer man.

Earlier in the day, photographer Tom Lovelace found a student that talked to him by the name of Chris Topher. "I think that's wrong (what they did to Coach Mayo) because he's been here so many...

Mayo one of the good guys

2:56 PM Fri, Apr 03, 2009 |
Ted Madden

In my time covering high school sports in the DFW area, JD Mayo has been one of my favorite coaches. He was always genuinely glad to see me, whether it was to do a story on his team, shoot one of his games, or just passing him in the bowels of the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, like I did at this year's state tournament.

A couple of brief stories... a few years ago, I played in one of my church league basketball games on a Thursday nigh...

Skyline's J.D.Mayo Loses Coaching Job

9:21 PM Thu, Apr 02, 2009 |
George Riba

UPDATE: Here is what Skyline Principal Harold Wright just told me about Coach Mayo's release: "I won't go into that (the reason for his release) It was just my desire to move in a new direction. As a principal, i have to make unpopular decisions. I've treated Coach Mayo with great respect and dignity and want to keep a working relationship with him."

Hoops talk: What's a bunny?

11:51 AM Thu, Mar 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Ted Madden, George Riba and HS Game Time producer Paul Melton and I were talking in the WFAA sports office this morning and Ted started talking about bunnies.

Not the furry little animals, but something in basketball.

Do you know what a bunny is?

Let us know.

George and I think it's some Chicago-term Ted brought to Texas.

Team Ticket loses to Lake Highlands girls

11:20 AM Thu, Mar 26, 2009 |
Ted Madden

We were there last night as the guys from The Ticket played a basketball game against the Lake Highlands Thunder, a girls team made up of mostly LH high school players.

It all started after that 100-0 game between private schools a couple months ago. The Hardline guys started talking about whether they could beat the winning team from that game ... and it eventually turned into last night's event.

We'll have the story tonight ...

Ponder's Boxell has family reunion in Austin

6:42 PM Wed, Mar 11, 2009 |
George Riba

It'll be a Boxell family reunion in Austin this week. Doug Boxell, the head coach at Ponder High School, is taking his team back, trying to win a second straight Class 2A State Championship.

If Shallowater reaches the 2A finals, then he'll be coaching against his son Lance, who is a student coach on that team. And since Isaiah Boxell is a point guard for the Lions, he may have to try and beat his brother if Ponder and Shallowater squa...

Argyle Girls Off To State

1:52 PM Wed, Mar 04, 2009 |
George Riba

The girls basketball team from Argyle is headed to Austin this hour. A good portion of the school's 7-hundred or so students turned out to see them off. The UIL has no practice times available for any of the teams when the arrive in Austin, so to get a feel of a bigger arena, the Eagles stopped by TCU for a workout before heading to South Texas.

At 19-and-14, Argyle doesn't have a gaudy record, but that's because they like playing big...

Athens' senior battles cancer

3:15 PM Wed, Feb 18, 2009 |
Ted Madden

I was in Athens, TX last night to get interviews for a story on Kevin Till, a high school senior. He has a dangerous form of cancer in his brain, and in December, doctors performed a surgery to remove as much of the tumor as they could.

Since then, Kevin has been treated with chemotherapy while continuing to go to school, and he plays/practices with the basketball team when he has enough energy.

Benny Rogers of the "Athens Dai...

Sharla Butler's Emotional Victory Lap

sharla.jpgI've been in the television busines for 20 years now. And the story we ran last night on Lancaster's Sharla Butler is probably the most emotional I've ever covered:

QB Tyrik Rollison signs with Auburn

4:54 PM Wed, Feb 04, 2009 |
George Riba

I had a chance to meet Sulphur Springs quarterback Tyrik Rollison who signed with Auburn today, and to think there was a time his mother didn't even want him to play quarterback.

"It's a big position, it's a big spot," his mother Brenda said today. "I asked him, are you ready, because I felt like he had to carry the whole team, you have to be a leader."

That was before he became one of the top recruited quarterbacks in Texas, ...

Wylie Football ... what AHMO means

1:56 PM Wed, Dec 17, 2008 |
Ted Madden

AHMO is a big deal in Wylie - it's on the team's jerseys, you'll see it on car windows, and on shops in downtown Wylie. But the question always comes up (from me too) ... what does it mean?

We talked to the man who brought AHMO to Wylie: former head football coach Jerry Shaffer. He told us where and how it originated, and I'll just copy the quotation here so I don't leave out parts of the story (which I'm forced to do TV story because ...

9:00 Rockwal-Heath vs. Hillcrest

Saturday
11:00 Southlake Carroll vs. Cedar Hill
2:00 Wylie vs. Hebron

That is a STRONG line-up ... should be four great, competitive game...

Mansfield Football makes history

3:38 PM Wed, Nov 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

The Mansfield Tigers beat Abilene last Friday night, 20-14 in the first round of the playoffs. It was just one of dozens of scores in the paper Saturday morning, but this one was special. First of all, it was a huge upset, with Mansfield beating a previously unbeaten team, one that was ranked 3rd in the state. The win gave the Tigers a 7-4 record.

But the win was much bigger than that. It was the first time in Mansfield's long history ...

Plano-Plano East game not the same

6:19 PM Thu, Sep 25, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Here's my back in the old days lecture.

In the fall of 1997, my senior year at Plano East, there was nothing bigger in the City of Plano, maybe save for the Balloon Festival, than the annual football game between Plano and Plano East Senior High Schools.

The city virtually shutdown and more than 17,000 people filled Clark Stadium, with many high school students sprawled out on grass that lines parts of the area above the south...

List of local game time, date changes due to Ike

9:25 AM Sat, Sep 13, 2008 |
Marjorie Owens

As Hurricane Ike approaches, weekend football games are adjusting their times and dates to avoid the bad weather.

The Texas Longhorns and Arkansas Razorbacks game in Austin, which was scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed and rescheduled for Sept. 27.

The Saturday TCU game against Stanford has been changed from 6 p.m. to noon in Fort Worth.

The Washington State-Baylor football game has been moved up to Friday nig...

Rowlett track star ready for football

3:20 PM Wed, Aug 27, 2008 |
Ted Madden

We're heading out in a few minutes to go to Rowlett's football practice, where we are going to do a story on Marquise Goodwin. He's a wide receiver and kick returner, but his real claim to fame is as a track athlete.

Goodwin was the star of the 2008 State Meet in May (with apologies to the Class-A female athlete who won a state title by herself). Goodwin earned three gold medals, a silver and a bronze. He would have shattered the state...

Texas Football's 2008 Super Team

Lots of local guys are the best of the best on the Texas Football magazine "Super Team," on as the best players at their positions regardless of their classification.

The 2008 all-class, all-star "Super Team" compiled by Texas Football magazine:

FIRST TEAM

QB--Garrett Gilbert, Lake Travis, 6-4, 190
RB--Jonathan Miller, Garland Naaman Forest, 6-1, 205

NCAA gets it right, reinstates Trinity grad's scholarship

6:10 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Maybe some humans actually do work at the NCAA.

James Bradshaw, who played on Trinity High School's state champion football team last year, has had his college football scholarship reinstated.

Earlier this week the NCAA ruled that his scholarship was not valid because of the way his eighth grade Spanish class was coded on his transcript.

Bradshaw's family says the NCAA reinstated the scholarship this afternoon, just in...

NCAA gutless for leaving Trinity grad hanging

6:25 PM Wed, Jul 16, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

News 8's Jim Douglas has an interesting story about James Bradshaw, a standout lineman form Trinity High School's state championship team. (Read it and watch video here.)

At this point, he's not allowed to attend Arkansas-Pine Bluff next month on a full-scholarship because of a transcript glitch that misidentified a Spani...

5A football title games headed to Houston

2:50 PM Wed, Jun 25, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

From The Associated Press:

This year's Class 5A state football championships will be held at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

It's the third year of the University Interscholastic League having the title games in Texas' biggest classification at the same site. The first two years were at San Antonio's Alamodome.

UIL officials have said they plan to pursue the same-site format for six years, and they hoped for two-y...

A Hawk Named Ralph has become a Good Luck Charm at Birdville

6:27 PM Mon, Jun 02, 2008 |
George Riba

Birdville High School has been playing baseball for eight seasons and this year for the first time, they earned a trip to the State Tournament. They Face Waxahachie on Wednesday in Round Rock.

After spending an hour or so on their campus, my favorite part became the team mascot, a real live Hawk living at their stadium. "It's a Red Tail Hawk," according to Head Coach David Hatcher. And apparently, the bird has become Birdville's good...

Why the baseball state tournament is different

12:35 PM Mon, Jun 02, 2008 |
Ted Madden

We are two days away from the high school baseball state finals, starting Wednesday in Round Rock. Four teams from the DFW area are going in class 4A and 5A: Waxahachie will play Birdville in the semi-finals; Southlake Carroll and Plano West could face each other in the championship game. Four teams from here, playing in the two biggest classifications are the most since ... ever, if my research on the UIL's website is correct. It's a very goo...

Plano West Baseball, still unbeaten

We went out to Plano West today, to do some interviews with the baseball team. That story will air Sunday night on High School Sports Special. They are doing something that baseball teams just don't do -- go undefeated...

Fantastic Finish

8:48 PM Mon, Mar 10, 2008 |
Dale Hansen

This is how they play basketball where I come from. The 3-A State Final in Iowa. Harlan and Dubuque Wahlert.

Harlan was down 4 with 10 seconds to go but a lay-up made it a 2 point game. They steal the inbounds pass and Michael Kaufman gets the game tied at 67 with 2 seconds to play. But after a time-out, Dubuque's Eric May gets a shot off from mid-court and it goes in.

Harlan, right up the road from my hometown Logan by...
