Gortat close to becoming a Mav

4:02 PM Fri, Jul 03, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Orlando gets 7 days to match Dallas' contract offer, but it's unlikely the Magic will for a guy who will play behind Dwight Howard. Reports are the Mavericks are offering Gortat a 5-year deal for the mid-level exception (I'm reading that's somewhere between $5.5 and $5.8 million per year).

Gortat's numbers aren't very impressive, but mostly because of this number: minutes per game. He averged only 12.6 as Howard's back-up. Season numb...

2:43 PM Fri, Jul 03, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

From the ALS Association:

Dallas--On July 4th, the Texas Rangers will commemorate the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's famous "Luckiest Man" farewell speech that he gave as he battled the disease that ultimately took his life.

This commemoration is part of The ALS Association's "Covering All the Bases" Hitting Challenge taking place during Major League Baseball's "4ALS Awareness" charitable initiative.

Former Texas Ra...

Rangers could use a little luck in July

2:34 PM Fri, Jul 03, 2009 |
George Riba

The Texas Rangers seem to have their arrow pointing up again. Now if they can just have similar success against a team that was in the World Series last fall, they might be back on the right track.

Granted a walk off home run by Hank Blalock on Wednesday night helped, but taking two out of three against Los Angeles was huge. They still trail the Angels by a game, but the team has won five of their last eight games.

Another rea...

Orlando's Gortat coming to Dallas?

4:53 PM Thu, Jul 02, 2009 |
Ted Madden

This from espn.com's Mark Stein. He also says that the Mavericks will likely re-sign Jason Kidd, but the Knicks will make a 3-year offer of their own.

More money issues for Hicks?

4:27 PM Thu, Jul 02, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Texas Rangers spokesman John Blake said that the team has no comment on the team's financial situation, but that "payroll is made." I called him a few minutes ago after reading Evan Grant's blog. Take a moment to read his entry - Evan did the legwork on this story.

Short version, t...

Rangers-Angels Tuesday tops team's TV ratings

3:53 PM Wed, Jul 01, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

From the Texas Rangers:

Tuesday night's Texas Rangers' 9-5 victory over the A.L. West-leading Los Angeles Angels was the highest-rated Rangers game of the season on FOX Sports Southwest. The telecast averaged a 3.8 Nielsen household rating in Dallas-Fort Worth, surpassing the year's previous high of 3.7 on May 27 vs. the Yankees, and was the best rating for a Rangers game on FOX Sports Southwest since a 4.0 on Aug. 7, 2008 vs. the Yank...

Report: Mavs offer Kidd 3-year deal

2:31 PM Wed, Jul 01, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

UPDATED:

The Dallas Mavericks want Jason Kidd and are, apparently, willing to pay him well over $25 million over the next three years.

The Mavs have offered Kidd a three-year deal, according to ESPN.

However, ESPN says Kidd, 36, may be seeking more money.

It's likely, according to reports, that Kidd will expect $10 million or...

A historic night in Baltimore

11:18 AM Wed, Jul 01, 2009 |
Ted Madden

We can debate the grammatical correctness of "A historic" vs "An historic" later ... suffice it to say I actually did a quick on-line search before deciding on it.

To the point - the baseball season moves so quickly that we aren't given a chance to savor single games. It's neither bad nor good ... it just is. The football season allows us this opportunity; the downside is we only get to watch our team once a week.

It's importan...

Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins: 'I'm the starter'

1:37 PM Tue, Jun 30, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Training camp is nearly a month away for the Dallas Cowboys, but one key position battle may already be decided.

Mike Jenkins says he's the starter at right cornerback, apparently, beating out fellow second-year corner Orlando Scandrick.

"Heading into training camp I'm the starter at right cornerback, and my job is to maintain that position," Jenkins wrote on his ...

12:05 PM Tue, Jun 30, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU baseball had it's most successful season this year and, appropriately, finishes the season with its highest ranking in school history, 11th.

It has been a good year for Horned Frog athletics. The football team finished the season ranked No. 7.

Here's more from TCU:

FORT WORTH, Texas - The historical 2009 baseball campaign saw the TCU baseball team finish ranked as high as No. 11 in the final poll of the season...

Yao Ming's injury could end his career

10:38 PM Mon, Jun 29, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Houston Rockets have no idea what to expect from center Yao Ming, so much so, according to ESPN, the team isn't sure if he'll play next season or ever again.

Yao suffered a hairline fracture in his left foot in the playoff loss to the Lakers May 8.

4:40 PM Mon, Jun 29, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Rangers moves continue. Outfielder Julio Borbon is up, pitcher Willie Eyre is down.

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight's game that the club has recalled outfielder Julio Borbon (#29) from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Hunter (#35) is scheduled to start tonight's series finale against San Diego. New Mav representing France...with style

2:17 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

Today, the WFAA sports team and I were at the Dallas Mavericks press conference to meet the team's new additions, Rodrigue Beaubois (a.k.a. Roddie) and Ahmad Nivins. What was interesting about Roddie was when he was waiving France's flag via his clothing style.

He took the look and term of the french cuff to a whole new level. If you took a gand...

Mavs executed their plan in draft

12:46 PM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Mavericks introduced two of their three players acquired in the NBA Draft to the media Friday.

The Mavs originally had the 22nd pick, but traded that to Portland for the 24th and 56th picks. Then the Mavs drafted B.J. Mullens at 24, but traded him to Oklahoma City for their 25th pick and a future second-round pick.

They knew what they were doing all along.

Instead of the one pick (22) the Mavs came into the...

Is Rangers' Chris Davis coming out of slump?

11:06 AM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

It has been a rough sophomore year for Texas Rangers first baseman Chris Davis.

He's hitting .209. What's amazing is that is 13 points better than yesterday. He was batting just .196 heading into his 4 for 5 night in Arizona.

And it wasn't just that he recorded his first multiple hit game since June 5 (he's had just nine multi-hit games this season).

Davis had two extra-base hits, including the 12th inning two-run hom...

Rangers win in 12

1:00 AM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Anybody else stay up late watching this? Chris Davis has a monster game, going 4-for-5, his last hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 12th. That was followed by a solo shot by David Murphy. Texas won it 9-8.

Rangers make it two in a row and move 1/2-game in front of the LA Angels for first place in the West. They have a good opportunity to keep this roll going - they have some momentum and will play 4th place San Diego this weekend in A...

Back in Dallas, T.O. talks about release

2:48 PM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens is in town for his football camp and talked with the media.

Owens was cut by the team in March and signed a few days later with the Buffalo Bills.

Here is some of what he had to say:

"I'll be the scapegoat. I'm not here it's (Tony Romo's) team."

"I'm not holding any ill w...

Mavs draft trade: good, bad or indifferent?

1:12 PM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Ted Madden

I said yesterday that the Dallas Mavericks trade with Portland seemed too good to be true: Mavs give up 2 spots in the first round (dropping from 22 to 24), and gain a 2nd round pick this year and 2nd round pick next year. On the way home from work last night, and again on the way to work today, I heard a couple of different radio shows talking about how the trade basically meant nothing. Hosts from both shows said that there is no way that th...

Dallas Cowboys name official team hotel

11:39 AM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Because every NFL team should have it own "official" hotel.

From the Dallas Cowboys:

IRVING, Texas (June 25, 2009) - The Dallas Cowboys announced today that the spectacular Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas has been selected as the "Official Hotel of The Dallas Cowboys." Having relocated their games to the newly constructed Cowboys Stadium, the most impressive sports venue in the country, it is no surprise that the Cow...

Dirk Nowitzki reveals more about ex

9:38 AM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki didn't want to talk about his ex-fiance, Cristal Taylor (or whatever it really is), when he was in Dallas, but he is talking with another German magazine, including shedding new details about the relationship like that Taylor told him her name was Christian Trevino.

The article titled "In Love with a Fraud" ap...

5:33 PM Wed, Jun 24, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Brandon George just posted this story on the hsgametime.com website. Coach Harrell says in the story that he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis four years ago, but didn't tell anyone with the exception of his wife and their parents until now.

Sam has always been gracious and friendly in our many interactions over ...

Spanish Conquest doesn't mean turning point for soccer

5:11 PM Wed, Jun 24, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

The United States men's national soccer team may have gotten lucky when they made it through to the Confederations Cup semifinal on a tiebreaker, but they certainly made the most of the opportunity.

The team knocked off Spain, the reigning European Champion 2-0 Wednesday.

After the team's lethargic loss to Brazil last week, many fans and journalists were calling for the firing of Coach Bob Bradley. Now, after a 3-0 victory agai...

Poker tournament for March of Dimes

1:44 PM Wed, Jun 24, 2009 |
Ted Madden

This past Saturday, I was invited to play in a Texas Hold'Em poker tournament for charity - proceeds going to the Dallas Division of the March of Dimes Foundation. Thanks to the sponsor Farmers Insurance for letting me play. You can read about the event here.

Jaime Aron is a colleague - a sportswriter for the Associate Press - he gave my name to the Farmers Insurance peop...

Rangers find themselves in some unaccustomed positions

3:57 PM Tue, Jun 23, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Texas Rangers are still in first place in the AL West.

But... The LA Angels of Anaheim are just a game back, despite losing their last three games. After tying the Dodgers for the best record for the month of May in MLB (20-9), the Rangers are just 7-11 so far in June.

So now we're faced with the eternal question, it seems: Are the...

Keep an eye on interleague games

1:44 PM Mon, Jun 22, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

Its always interesting to watch American and National League teams play each other during the regular season. Interleague games are fun, different; and above all, very important to watch. These games can really put a team's batting or pitching performance to the test.

The NL has the better pitchers and the AL has the better hitters. A lot of this would have to be due to the major difference between both leagues where the NL uses its pi...

Plano won't see a U.S. Open champion

11:55 AM Mon, Jun 22, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

As the 2009 U.S. Open took its final strokes, North Texas' Hunter Mahan struggled in his efforts to keep alive and bring the trophy back to his home in Plano.

He finished at an even par and had consistent numbers throughout the match. In the end, neither the greens, nor the pins, were friendly to him. There was one moment ...

Ex-Cowboys DT La'Roi Glover retires

9:42 AM Mon, Jun 22, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle La'Roi Glover is retiring after 13 seasons in the NFL.

"I'm blessed that I was able to play this game that I love for so long. It has been such an incredible journey. The players, coaches, and front office staff in the cities I've played have all given me so many great memories," Glover said in a news release. "I still love the game with the same passion I had as a young player in high school, so...

Weak NBA draft shouldn't mean boring offseason

4:39 PM Fri, Jun 19, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

We're less than a week away from the 2009 NBA Draft, and analysts continue to label the class of 2009 as "weak." This class certainly isn't as strong as the class of 2003, and it's doubtful any class ever will be, but there are still lots of players who can help teams who are just one or two pieces away from winning a championship.

That, coupled with the potential shuffling of lots of big name players, should make sure that the 2009 o...

Stars made history 10 years ago

4:33 PM Fri, Jun 19, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

June 19, 1999. Do you remember what happened on that day which just happens to be 10 years ago?

The Dallas Stars won the franchise's first and only Stanley Cup in dramatic fashion with Brett Hull's goal at 14:51 of the 3rd overtime in Buffalo against the Buffalo Sabres.

I remember watching this game, at age 14, while on vacation in a hotel in New Mexico. I wasn't in New Mexico for vacation; it was a stopping point on the way ...

Mark Cuban: Not interested in buying Cubs

4:04 PM Fri, Jun 19, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Mark Cuban still isn't planning on buying the Chicago Cubs.

The Dallas Mavericks owner told ESPN he has "no plans to get back in the mix" for the Cubbies.

A few days ago I heard Cuban say similar things on a radio show. He said the move didn't make financial sense for him at this time.

Cowboys minicamp winners and losers

3:11 PM Thu, Jun 18, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys' three-day minicamp is over so it's time to take a look at who helped their cause. You can't tell a whole lot about players when they're not wearing pads, but you can certainly tell who is making plays and is catching the coaches' eyes.

Winners:

Patrick Crayton: The guy who is always fluctuating between second and third wide receiver had a strong minicamp. Crayton runs good routes and

6:25 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Matt Harrison is back with the Rangers and gets the start tonight, while Warner Madrigal (with his 10.13 ERA) is going back to triple-A.

Here's more from the Texas Rangers:

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight's game that the club has reinstated left-handed pitcher Matt Harrison from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster for Harrison, the club has optioned right-handed pitcher ...

Drop goes the snap

4:39 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys are having a hard time doing one of the most fundamental things in football: Snapping the ball.

The center-quarterback exchange is how every play starts. If you can't do that, you can't do anything.

Well Cory Proctor and Jon Kitna cannot connect. They just bobbled an exchange. It's been a consistent problem during minicamp.

Before and after most of the practice sessions the centers and quarterbacks h...

Has Wade Phillips changed?

4:23 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips is changing, but isn't.

That's about how he said it during his chat with the media Wednesday.

You'll remember after the Cowboys season ended with that ugly blowout loss to the Eagles with a playoff spot on the line that Phillips vowed to change.

So has he?

"I'm not going to change my personal...

Mavs re-up with radio home

4:09 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

From the Dallas Mavericks:

Irving, TX - 103.3 ESPN and the Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have agreed to a four-year extension of their radio play-by-play agreement. 103.3 ESPN, which debuted in April 2001, has broadcast Mavs games since the 2001-02 season, and the network and team will now be together through 2012-13. In that time, the Mavericks have had a team record 9 years of 50 plus wins and made it to the NBA Finals ...

Phillips wants Cowboys to maintain focus

4:00 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips hopes his team maintains focus in the nearly six weeks until the team begins training camp in San Antonio.

"We've got a ways to go," Phillips said of his team's work in minicamp.

He says the players will continue to work in the team's conditioning program and coaches will stay in contact with their players.

"I think mentally and physically you have to be ready for camp," Phillips said.

Cowboys WR corps thin

3:45 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

UPDATE: Mike Jefferson finally showed up, not sure where he went. He missed some early positional drills.

The list of Dallas Cowboys wide receivers not practicing is getting much longer than the ones who are.

As I wrote this morning, two more receivers missed the early practice today. Now there are just five receivers practicing (...

Last Cowboys practice until late July

3:31 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys are starting their final practice of minicamp. The next time they take the field will be in late July in San Antonio for training camp.

It will be much cooler there inside the Alamo Dome.

Luckily, I've moved upstairs to watch this practice from the air conditioned press box at Standridge Stadium.

It's currently 95 degrees, but it feels a lot worse on the Astro Turf field with a whole bunch of sun an...

New backup Kitna struggling

12:01 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Jon Kitna is a welcome addition to the Cowboys, especially after the disaster that happened to the team's offense when Tony Romo was hurt last season.

Throughout most of minicamp, Kitna has looked like the reliable backup they need. He has good arm strength.

However, in the first practice of the last day of minicamp, he didn't look very good. Most of his passes were incompletions and he had two picked.

Terence Newman...

Cowboys getting feisty

11:44 AM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Maybe it's the heat out here.

The Dallas Cowboys offense and defense are having some words.

It's been an ongoing theme of minicamp.

The latest incident came in six-on-six passing drills. The Cowboys offensive specialists were going against the defensive secondary and inside linebackers.

Tony Romo threw a pass towards ti...

Cowboys like the tight ends

11:18 AM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys have two very good tight ends.

Jason Witten is among the best in the game and Martellus Bennett is a very athletic playmaker.

So it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that when the Cowboys started their offense vs. defense in the red zone offense that they began with three tight ends.

Rookie John Phillips, a sixth-round pick, was part of a three tight end formation, with Bennett and Wiitten split ou...

Cowboys continue to lose depth at WR

11:09 AM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

UPDATE: WR Willie Reid was sick today, according to coach Wade Phillips.

The Dallas Cowboys have been thin at wide receiver during minicamp.

Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, Isiah Stanback and Travis Wilson have all missed the entire camp with assorted injuries.

You can add two more to the MIA list.

Kevin Ogletree tweaked his knee during yesterday's workout and Willie Reid, who just joined the team for this camp, ...
