Eagles offense: setting it up to "take a shot"

4:35 PM Fri, Nov 06, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

I was privy to an interesting conversation between veteran Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh and 2nd year cornerback Orlando Scandrick today in the locker room. The two were talking about how to defend the Eagles passing game. I'm no NFL coach, but I was able to glean this: when playing defense against McNabb, most of the time look for the ball to get there on a line. The two were talking about how to defend when one's back is to the quarter...

AccuScore Report: Cowboys at Eagles

3:07 PM Fri, Nov 06, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

DALLAS @ PHILADELPHIA

On paper these are two very similar teams with dynamic, young WRs and hot QBs. The Cowboys have the edge in the running game and if Dallas averages over 5 ypc the Cowboys are the 63 percent favorite. However, if the Eagles hold the Cowboys to under 4 ypc Philadelphia is the heavy 70 percent favorite. Donovan McNabb is projected to have an excellent game with 2 TDs and 250 yards passing. If Dallas...

Romo's prospects for Sunday

12:39 PM Fri, Nov 06, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Adam Duerson from si.com wrote an article previewing the Cowboys-Eagles game this Sunday night. His first few paragraphs talk about Romo's record in big games, which he defines as games against teams that finished the season with an above-.500 record. Whether that definitio...

NFL season too early to judge

12:38 PM Wed, Nov 04, 2009 |
Ted Madden

So after 8 weeks of the NFL season, we have a pretty good idea of what's going on, right? The Saints, Colts, and Vikings are very good. There are a bunch of teams that area really, really bad. And then a whole lot of teams somewhere in between.

But it's interesting to look back at where we were a year ago at this time. Washington began the 2008 season 6-2 (they finished 8-8). Buffalo was 5-2 (finished 7-9). Green Bay started 4-3 (finis...

Numbers nugget: What does 5-2 mean?

2:25 PM Mon, Nov 02, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

Since Jerry Jones has owend the Cowboys, the team has started the season 5-2 or beter 8 times. The DMN had a nice breakdown of the results. Here you go:

2009 - 5-2: we'll see where this 5-2 start takes them.

2007 - 6-1: 13-3, won NFC East, lost to Giants in playoffs

2003 - 5-2: 10-6, lost in wild card round

1995 - 6-1: 12-4, won Super Bowl XXX

1994 - 6-1: 12-4, lost NFC Championship

1993 - 5-2:...

Coach Joe: Good win, yeah but now

11:29 AM Mon, Nov 02, 2009 |
Coach Joe Avezzano

Everyone should be very happy with the way that the Cowboys dispersed of the Seattle Seahawks. The 38-17 win was done with great efficiency in every aspect of the game. Offensively, Romo had another mistake free game with 10 different receivers getting the ball, the defense made some key stops early in the game and applied pressure constantly on Matt Hasselbeck as they continue to improve, the kicking game was again excellent as David Buehler ...

Ratliff hurts knee, game status in air

2:32 PM Fri, Oct 30, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips says pro bowl defense tackle Jay Ratliff got hurt in practice yesterday.

Its a right knee injury, Ratliff listed as questionable on the team's injury report.

If he can't play, its a huge impact on the defense. I did a story that ran on channel 8 on Wednesday centering on the improved pressure the cowboys defense is generating. Several of the cowboys tell me it all starts with the havoc Ratliff...

Does someone miss being in Dallas?

11:51 AM Thu, Oct 29, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

To say that the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills No. 1 receivers have been a disappointment this season, would be an understatement. Roy Williams has 12 catches for 230 yards and a touchdown in a Cowboys uniform. T.O. also has only one touchdown with 18 catches for 242 yards.

I didn't realize that there such a budding rivalry between the two of them?

Website claims Romo one of best in history

11:03 AM Thu, Oct 29, 2009 |
Ted Madden

This from the webside coldhardfootballfacts.com. I'm just posting it. So whatever you think of this, don't shoot the messenger. But I am interested in your thoughts.

It's official: Romo one of the best passers in history

The NFL requires 1,500 pass attempts to quality for "official" league records. Dallas QB Tony Romo, after his team's 37-21 w...

Romo better at avoiding turnovers

4:57 PM Wed, Oct 28, 2009 |
Ted Madden

I wrote about this after the Carolina game, and I think it's worth revisiting every once in a while throughout the season. As we all know, one of Tony Romo's goals in the off-season was to work on protecting the ball better. On Sunday, he had his third no-turnover game of the season. Last year, he had only one of those (in the 13 games he played).

When Romo's been bad this year, it's been real bad - 4 turnovers against the Giants and 2...

Cowboys good after bye week

3:17 PM Tue, Oct 27, 2009 |
Ted Madden

With their 37-21 win over Atlanta, the Cowboys are now 3-0 under Wade Phillips coming off a bye week. But the winning doesn't stop there.

In 2007 (their 13-3 season), the Cowboys didn't play during Week 8 of the season. They returned from the bye and won 38-17 at Philadelphia. Then they won their next two games as well, at the NY Giants (31-20) and home against Washington (28-23).

In 2008 (their 9-7 season), the Cowboys were of...

Romo finding the right "mix"

4:45 PM Mon, Oct 26, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

From snap to score it took 8 seconds. It was classic Romo. Taking a risk that nearly ended in no points and a crescendo of boos from a fan base wondering what their quarterback was thinking. Instead, it was a game-changing touchdown that helped propel the Cowboys to their biggest win of this young season.

Mesmerizing and magical, Romo eluded a slew of Falcon defenders, and instead of throwing the ball away with time running out in t...

Marcus Spears sack got 'em going

4:35 PM Mon, Oct 26, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

Cowboys linebacker Bradie James says Marcus Spears sack gave the defense a great kick start.

The Falcons put together an 8 minute drive for the games first score, but the next time they had the ball, Spears said he took advantage of the Falcons offensive line paying too much attention to Jay Ratliff. "Spears got the first sack and that set the tone," said James.

Against a Falcon offense that hadn't given up a sack in 4 games...

Updated Breaking News: Ware gets extension

Josh Harvey

The Cowboys have announced a press conference for 4:30 P.M. today. The players had the day off in what is called a "Victory Monday." Wade Phillips just wrapped up his media availability.

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Cowboys have agreed to terms on an extension with linebacker DeMarcus Ware. Ware led the team with 20 sacks last season. At this time, there is no details on the numbers of the contract.

Sensabaugh returns with a huge performance

12:38 PM Mon, Oct 26, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

While a lot of the defensive attention was put on Keith Brooking playing his old team, it was safety Gerald Sensabaugh coming back from an injured thumb that proved to be vital to the Cowboys win on Sunday.

"In the NFL you can't hold anything back. When you hold back, that's when the other team's scoring points. As long as I can play full speed, I'll be out there," stated Sensabaugh after the

COACH JOE: Enjoy the Journey

11:17 AM Mon, Oct 26, 2009 |
Coach Joe Avezzano

Football in some ways does mirror life. It is a journey, not a quick moment that defines the result. Hopefully life is long and results in ups and downs that ultimately can be judged as having been a success. But since it is a long process, if you don't enjoy the journey you are wasting valuable time. That's how I feel about a football season. There will be ups and downs and hopefully the end result will be a success.

This 37-21 victo...

Cowboys offered trade for TE Martellus Bennett

4:53 PM Thu, Oct 22, 2009 |
George Riba

Cowboy's owner Jerry Jones said yesterday that he turned down an offer for one of his young players before Tuesday's trade deadline and today reports indicate that player was Tight End Martellus Bennett.

"I just think that's part of this league and part of things going on the NFL," Bennett says. "I'm happy to be a Cowboy. This is where I want to be so thank you Jerry."

The Cincinnati Bengals were apparently the team trying to a...

"Cricket's chirp:" Let's impose our will

3:57 PM Thu, Oct 22, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

He's best known as the Cowboy player who once ate a cricket on a bet. And his nickname instantly became "Cricket."

I know an almost invisable fullback nicknamed "Cricket" might not hold a great deal of weight to the general public when it comes to his opinion.

But "Cricket" might have a point when it comes to the Atlanta game, "We're stronger than they are up front," he told me. "So let's run the ball and impose our will."

Brooking jokes about bashing their heads in Sunday

3:38 PM Thu, Oct 22, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking says there are plenty of people in the Falcons organization that he still cares about deeply, but he said jokingly he still wants to "bash their heads in" Sunday.

The Senoia, Ga native played 11 seasons for the Falcons, after graduating from Georgia Tech. He's all about Atlanta football. He's also incredibly emotional on the football field: see his head-butt into the chest of linebackers coach Reggie...

Cowboys red zone recession

3:22 PM Thu, Oct 22, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

The Cowboys have been awful in the red zone in the past 3 games. I actually call the area inside the opponents 20 yard line "the green zone." Its where pro players make their money. Given that, the Cowboys are in a red zone recession. 9 trips in the last 3 games have netted just 2 touchdowns, and in 3 of those trips, they came away with no points at all! In this offensive-minded NFL that'll get you beat, unless of course, you're playing ...

The Cowboys' problems: penalties and turnovers

1:23 PM Thu, Oct 22, 2009 |
Ted Madden

We know turnovers and penalties can kill a football team ... so why aren't the Cowboys dead yet?

This is a team that ranks high in penalties and low in turnover margin.

Start with the penalties - Dallas is 5th in penalties per game, at 7-point-4. And those flags are costing the Cowboys 66 yards per game, which is 4th worst in the league.

23 different Cowboys players have commtted a total of 37 penalties.

Tony Romo playing too much golf?

7:34 PM Mon, Oct 19, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

The honors just keep coming for Tony Romo.....Oh wait, the football honors haven't been coming as of late, but he did pick up some hardware recently from Golf Digest.

Romo has been ranked the No. 1 amateur golfer among professional athletes. He beat out the likes of people like Craig Hentrich, Jerry Rice, Mark McGwire, Mike Schmidt, Brett Hull, and

What did we learn in the off week?

6:38 PM Mon, Oct 19, 2009 |
Coach Joe Avezzano

The off week creates some real problems for critics and experts of the great game of football. They don't have a game to analyze so they have to pick apart what has been done and guess what is coming up next. That's a tough job because the way the league functions, who knows what to expect?

Let's start with the off week practice schedule. Wade Phillips has to do what he thinks is right for this team at this time and sink or swim with t...

Tiger Woods visits Valley Ranch

7:20 PM Wed, Oct 14, 2009 |
George Riba

Tiger Woods spent a few days in North Texas the last few days, even hanging out with the Cowboys after attending the U2 concert Monday night.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says he enjoyed the opportunity to speak with Woods, who "talked about being a leader." Woods was at the Valley Ranch practice facility on Tuesday after sharing a suite at Cowboys Stadium Monday night with Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and tight end Jason Witten.

Felix Jones hopes to practice again next Wednesday

4:27 PM Wed, Oct 14, 2009 |
George Riba

Cowboys Running back Felix Jones knows the bye week has come at a perfect time. "Right now, I'm just looking at right now," says Jones.

Jones hurt his left knee in week three against Carolina, and he hasn't played in a game since. "Well, it's frustrating but this is football, a very physical sport. It's going to happen," says Jones. "It's just how you deal with it and how you come back."

Jones says there is a good possibility t...

Choice likes the extra workload

2:00 PM Mon, Oct 12, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

In the past ten games there is one thing that is clear about the Dallas Cowboys. When Tashard Choice gets touches, he produces. Choice put in another solid performance yesterday running for 92 yards on 8 carries and a score.

"That's the story of my career, huh, just making the most of my opportunities,'' Choice told reporters after the game. ``I got in the second half and got to run the football more and got the chance to make some...

Not T.O., not Bob Hayes, not Michael Irvin, but Miles Austin

4:58 PM Sun, Oct 11, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

In his first career start, Miles Austin looked like receivers of the past. Only his performance was better. While it's easy to say that he was playing a winless K.C., no other Cowboys wide receiver has ever topped 250 yards in a game. Austin becomes only the 15th player in NFL history to do it. But more importantly, he might have given the Cowboys some confidence going into the bye week.

Let the debate begin. Should the 4th year veter...

AccuScore Report: Cowboys at Chiefs

2:47 PM Thu, Oct 08, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

DALLAS @ KANSAS CITY
The Cowboys should be able to control this game running the ball and holding Larry Johnson to under 70 rushing yards. In simulations, the Cowboys are averaging 125 rushing yards vs just 70 for the Chiefs. Tony Romo and Matt Cassel both have passer ratings between 87 and 90 in simulations, but the advantage Dallas has is in pressuring the passer. There is a 60 percent chance of Cassel getting sacke...

Roy Williams misses second straight practice

2:42 PM Thu, Oct 08, 2009 |

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams, who says he is going to play this weekend, missed his second straight day of practice. Williams is suffering from three bruised ribs.

Center Andre Gurode (knee) returned to practice after sitting out yesterday. It looks like he will be fine to go on Sunday against the Chiefs.

Be careful what you wish for ...

11:00 AM Tue, Oct 06, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Fans, coaches, and Tony Romo himself wanted him to get better at protecting the ball. In 2008, he played 13 games, threw 14 interceptions and lost 7 fumbles (out of 13 total fumbles). This off-season, Romo worked hard to improve his ball-protection while in the pocket, hoping to elminate those fumbles.

Who else thought that Romo was playing tight on Sunday in Denver? He looked like a guy trying not to make a mistake, and we didn't see...

Wade didn't know Barber was hurt?

4:42 PM Mon, Oct 05, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Cowboys Coach Wade Phillips said immediately after their loss on Sunday to the Broncos that he wasn't sure why Marion Barber was not getting carries in the second half. Barber, who was coming off a quad injury, had looked almost normal in the first half, with 10 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown. Today, the media found out why "Marion the Barbarian" was not out there.

"Marion's quad got tight, so we were limited to just one running ...

BEST OF THE WORST-WORST OF THE BEST (Joe Avezzano's Thoughts)

3:51 PM Mon, Oct 05, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Here is what coach thought of the game:

That is exactly what the Cowboys are at this time. They are not one of the worst teams in the league but they certainly aren't one of the best. Why? One of the reasons is the obvious lack of production provided by the passing game. Dismiss the Tampa game because much of the yardage came because of terrible secondary mistakes by Tampa which allowed Dallas to make

Cowboys cut Chauncey Washington

We just received this press release from the Dallas Cowboys:

Oct 5th, 2009

The Dallas Cowboys released running back Chauncey Washington today. He was signed to the club's active roster on October 3, 2009 from their practice squad. He played in one game (at Denver, 10/4) and recorded a special teams tackle.

This happened for two different reasons. First, Washington only made the active roster this week...

According to ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins, Roy Williams' has three bruised ribs and his status is questionable this week against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The injury happened in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos. The wide receiver was reaching high for a soaring Tony Romo pass, when he was hit in the ribs by Broncos linebacker D.J. Willia...

Key battle on both sides of the ball: left end

1:47 PM Sun, Oct 04, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

Here's a key battle to watch on both sides of the ball. Left tackle versus outsdie linebacker.

Broncos outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil is second in the league in sacks with 6 and will be going up against Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams. Flo's been racking up fines - $25,000 total - 1 fine in each of the first 3 weeks. But offensive line coach Hudson Houck has praised Flo's work on the edge; he's yet to give up a sack this season...

AccuScore Report: Cowboys vs Broncos

2:05 PM Thu, Oct 01, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

DALLAS @ DENVER
The Broncos are 3-0, but are underdogs at home vs the Cowboys. The Broncos run defense has played surprising well, but they wil have their hands full with Dallas. The Cowboys are averaging over 130 rushing yards. If Denver can limit the Cowboys to under 125 rushing yards they pull close to even with Dallas winning 49 percent. However, if Dallas runs for over 125 yards the Cowboys are heavy 88 pe...

Jerry Jones: Expect Barber to play

2:00 PM Thu, Oct 01, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

According to several media outlets, Jerry Jones stated that he Marion Barber should play this weekend against the Denver Broncos.

From DallasNews.com:

A win is a win - isn't it?

So this is the standard now ... a cowboys win isn't good enough anymore ------------??? We have apparently come a long way

The cowboys beating Carolina 21 - 7 and needing a Terence Newman interception to get the final 7 isn't the prettiest of wins ... not the way you would hope the cowboys can play .... but the reality of a 16 game season is that every team will play some bad games - but the good teams find a wa...

Cowboys RB Felix Jones has pcl injury

5:43 PM Tue, Sep 29, 2009 |
George Riba

We found out today what kind of injury Cowboys Running Back Felix Jones suffered Monday night. "He sprained his PCL and it's yet to be determined how long or if he'll be out very long," says Cowboys Head Coach Wade Phillips.

It doesn't sound like Phillips is too worried about his injury, but he really doesn't know yet. "Yeah, it could have been worse. I could have said he's out, or he's going to be out 2-to-4 or 6-to-10, or whatever,"...

Why Marion Barber wasn't seen on the sideline monday night

5:23 PM Tue, Sep 29, 2009 |
George Riba

I heard a lot of talk on the way in to work today, questioning Cowboys Running Back Marion Barber and why he wasn't on the sidelines during Monday night's game. Apparently there was a good a reason.

Head Coach Wade Phillips said he didn't want his running back standing on a bad leg that long. "We don't want him standing up four hours when you've got a quad injury," Phillips said. "I don't think that would have helped him either."

Romo's better at protecting the ball .... really

5:04 PM Tue, Sep 29, 2009 |
Ted Madden

During his press conference following Dallas' 21-7 win over Carolina, Tony Romo was talking about avoiding turnovers. Here's the transcript:

"And I thought about this the other day, and I know we don't include pre-season games in anything we talk about, but we do as players. We had three preseason games and we had one turnover. We've played 3 regular season games, and -- (here, he caught himself mis-speaking a bit; Romo meant that he -...

It took the Cowboys this time ten and a half quarters, but now they have their first sack of the season. Jay Ratliff bought down Jake Delhomme.

Cowboys trail at half, 7-0

It wasn't the offensive showing that Tony Romo wanted to have. Coming under fire all week for his play last week, the quarterback could not lead a scoring drive for Dallas in the first half. The Panthers go into the break with a 7-0 lead.

Romo was constantly dealing with pressure in his face, as the line played less than stellar in the first half.

The defense did look good at times, but reverted to what we had seen in ...

It took nine and a half quarters, but the Cowboys defense finally forced a turnover. On 1st down and 10 from the 42-yard line, Jake Delhomme attempted to go deep on the sideline. Mike Jenkins didn't like being picked on. The 2nd year player went up and caught the interception over Muhsin Muhammad.

The Cowboys defense was the last team in the league to force a turnover. They are still looking for their first sack of the season.

JerryWorld will sport a closed roof tonight

4:23 PM Mon, Sep 28, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Jerry Jones has informed the media that the roof will be closed tonight against the Carolina Panthers.

I'm wondering if this is just a way to get the stadium in the news or if there is an actual reason why. There is no rain being foretasted tonight.

I do know one thing, the stadium will seem a lot louder for Carolina with the roof closed compared to the roof being open.
