Recently in Cowboys Camp 2009 CategoryThe Cowboys sent out this e-mail moments ago: "The Dallas Cowboys also released tight end Rodney Hannah today. Hannah spent the past two seasons on the club's practice squad. The team now has 76 players on their roster and will need to make one move by September 1, the deadline for the first roster reduction to 75 players." Hannah caught a touchdown pass Friday night against Tennessee. DMN beat writer Todd Archer is reporting t...
Did the Cowboys training camp seem a lot quieter to you this year? It did to me and maybe that's a good thing. Their 31 practices in 22 days in the Alamodome in San Antonio are over. Without Wide Receiver Terrell Owens and Cornerback Adam "Packman" Jones, running around, all the drama from the past seemed gone. Even Jessica Simpson isn't around anymore to create even more drama. "We definitely needed less drama. The dramatics,...
The Associated Press reports that injured running back Alonzo Coleman and Coleman has been out during camp with a knee injury. He appeared
Many have suggested that the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp has been anything but eventful and is reminiscent of the Hollywood movie "Grou...
The Cowboys practice Tuesday was their last real practice-session before the season opener against the Raiders, and Tony Romo and Roy Williams just couldn't get it together. Let's just say after watching that display, the Cowboy nation should feel fortunate the season opener's still a month away. The duo - anything but dynamic. By my highly unofficial count during team drills, Romo missed Williams 5 out of 9 times, and one high thro...
It's a couple of days late ... but I wanted to explain why I wasn't in San Antonio last Friday and on Channel 8 that night I WAS ROBBED Some punk broke into my car ..... took the door handle off and stole my billfold and cell phone and a couple of cheapy items ... it did bother me he didn't take my sunglasses or cd collection of Rod Stewart's greatest hits ... apparently it's a punk who has better fashion taste ...
Turns out Mike Jenkins wasn't the only corner nicked up... Wade Phillips says Terence Newman has suffered a slight groin strain. Even though Phillips says it's minor, it's always a concern given Newman's history with this kind of thing. Phillips says Newman's MRI was fine and downplayed the severity, adding Newman probably could have practiced in today's a...
Its the first injury of a front-liner so far in training camp and the Cowboys are holding out hope its not that bad. Jerry Jones says cornerback Mike Jenkins may have a high ankle sprain - the last thing you want to hear for a cornerback, or any player for that matter. Jenkins hurt his right ankle during team drills in this morning's practice. He had to be carted off the field after he was helped to the sideline. Jenkins and fellow ...
Wade Phillips was answering some questions about Demarcus Ware during his briefing today (which are getting more and more brief), from Associated Press writer Jaime Aron. Aron said that Ware wants to add more moves to his tool box and asked if Phillips is helping him with that. I'll go ahead and transcribe the coach's answer, because I thought it was interesting. "I tell him not to do anything, not to make up stuff that -- you know, yo...
Cowboys receiver Roy Williams has been doing a neat thing in this camp ... at least he was until the lawyers got involved. Living in an era that finds 'changing technology' moving about as fast as the traffic flow on your local interstate, more and more NFL teams are imposing restrictions to 'nip that technology in the bud' for those in attendance of their team's workout. Rich Dalrymple, Director of Public Relations for the Cowboys earlier this week met with media members covering this training camp to request that we abstain from printing or b...
Linebacker Bradie James had an incredible year last year, posting a career high 202 tackles. He's only the second Dallas defender to top 200 in one season, second only to Eugene Lockhart who had 222 in 1989. And like last year when he was a team captain, more is expected from a leadership role this year. "I always talk about guys accepting their roles," he says. "What I know is, I have to go out there and perform real well because if ...
Cornerback Terence Newman lead the Cowboys with four interceptions last season and now is getting used to the idea of Head Coach Wade Phillips taking over defensive responsibilities. Newman says not much has changed. "He's the head coach. You got out and play, that's what you do," he says. "It doesn't matter, we still have to go out and play. If he's going to call it, we've got to play it." Phillips is certainly more involved ...
This is my 29th cowboys training camp .... and this is absolutely, positively, without doubt the most boring one yet.
Secondary: Begging to be Hurd Wednesday's morning practice another platform for Cowboys receiver Sam Hurd to show what he can do for this team, and once again he takes advantage. The offense spent most of the day working on the two minute drill and time and time again Hurd made catches - including a pair of spectacular diving grabs that stood out at the best plays of the day. And when he was on the field with Tony Romo he snagged a touchdown p...
A few trends I've picked up on while watching a week's worth of practices: Sam Hurd is catching EVERYTHING. He's been playing better than any receiver in camp so far. The Cowboys can't go on two. Most times, someone is jumping, whether it's a lineman (and not just Flozell Adams) or a wide receiver. Every time a quarterback says "kill kill kill" before the snap, it's a run. EVERY time. I noticed it late last week and ha...
Cowboy's wide receiver Sam Hurd played in just three games last season which is why he is ready to get this season going. "I consider myself a much wiser guy because I've seen a lot of older guys in front of me," says Hurd. There is lots of work to be done for Hurd and not much time to do it. "You got to get back into the groove," says Hurd. And that applies to the entire wide receiver unit. "Tony Romo didn't have Roy (Williams) the wh...
"And in this corner, a 6-8 tackle from Boston College ... Marc Colombo!!!" "And in the other corner, a 6-4 nose tackle from Auburn ... Jay Ratliff!!!" Here was the play: Bobby Carpenter batted a Tony Romo pass straight up in the air with his left hand, then made the interception and started running. I looked at the tape a couple times since the play and saw that Colombo was actually in front of Ratliff after the INT; both are i...
Dale is getting into the mix today - two questions from Hansen already (has to be a new record). Cowboys PR man Rich Dalrymple met with the media at practice today and asked us not to show and talk about it when the Cowboys practice an odd formation (wildcat, for example). The Cowboys don't want opposing coaches to have a chance to see that until the real games start. Dale asked Phillips whether he thinks that it makes any diff...
Notes from Tuesday's presser: Phillips' dad was at practice, and afterward Phillips said that his dad (Bum Phillips, former Houston Oilers coach) notices a lot of things, and he noticed today that players who weren't actively participating in drills were concentrating on them anyway. That's a good sign. We had our first fight at practice - after a Bobby Carpenter interception, Jay Ratliff knocked down Marc Colombo, and Colombo ...
Cowboys have finally given in to the paranoia that affects so many coaches in the nfl ..... We're being told now that we can't report on any new plays the Cowboys might be working on in practice. His grandpa, Abraham Rubashevsky fought for the Red Army in World War II, two generations removed, his grandson...
GeCowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh is expecting big things from the secondary this fall. Sensabaugh, who is in his 6th year in the league, has been around long enough to sense speed. "I know some of these guys are some the fastest guys I've ever played around," says Sensabaugh. "We've got some really fast guys in Orlando Scardrick, Terence Newman, Mike Jenkins and Mike Hawkins, now he's really fast." Today was the first day th...
Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams has a habit of practicing without tightening his helmet strap. So when he lost it during practice after a hit by Cornerback Orlando Scandrick, the questions starting coming. "It didn't bother me none," says Williams. "It's just football." Williams will be taking Terrell Owens spot in the offense this fall, if he can just hang on to his helmet. "I never keep my helmet buckled because I never intend to...
David Buehler is listed as a rookie kicker on the Cowboys roster this season, but apparently he's much more than that. Buehler is expected to be a kickoff specialist this fall thanks to his strong leg which allows him to put the ball in the end zone. But Buehler is also athletic, playing safety in college and running a 4.57 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. And he bench p...
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was with me on Sports Special last night .... and he reminds me again why I do like this guy so much. I know most of you don't think I do because I'm always ripping on him for something ... but the man always keeps coming back for more. He's like one of those pop up boxing dolls we had when we were kids ... the ones with the rounded bottom ... you hit the clown in the face...
The Cowboys with the 3rd day of consecutive 2-a-day workouts and the offense looked awful in the morning session. It was mostly teamwork in the red zone. In fact, the am practice with more 11-on-11 work than we've seen in one single practice so far in camp. Not good for the guys in white jerseys, though. The offensive timing ...
Practice this morning looked more like a scrimmage. Usually, they don't get into team drills (11-on-11) until the second half of practice. Today they jumped into team very early, and did that for the rest of the session (close to an hour). Mostly the offense was working in the red zone, although it wasn't working well. Tony Romo threw a couple of interceptions, one in the end zone, and another when Roy Williams and Orlando Scandrick ar...
John Kitna has been a very average quarterback in his 13-year career. 152 touchdowns, 151 interceptions, and a 76.6 quarterback rating. Watching him from a distance, I've always liked Kitna. He comes off as a tough QB who can be one of the guys - a player who's easy to root for whether you're a teammate or a fan. Whatever he lacks in talent or in shiny statistics he makes up for with grit, which in some ways make him more likeable, and...
The Channel 8 sports crew used Dale Hansen's birthday as an excuse to enjoy a nice meal at a San Antonio steak house on...
A few years ago while cruising the internet Jerry Goodsell observed an artistic rendition of Troy Aikman painted on the front of a No. 8 Cowboys jersey. He remembers telling himself that he thought it was nice but he was convinced that he could do an even better. And so it began..... After only 3 years of undertaking his new hobby Goodshell has managed to design and market his very own artistic creations. Each of his hand painted playe...
This Cowboys new ticket plan they're announcing is the 1st ticket that makes any sense to me. 29 dollars gets you a standing room only ticket in their "party plaza" .... but you can see the field ... there will be tv monitors everywhere ... and cold beer Now the beer will probably be 29 dollars a cup and maybe not that cold ... but I digress. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he wants to create a scene like ...
The bashing of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has to stop - it really does. Now since I am the voice of...
Coach Phillips was asked about beginning training camp with a practice during which players are not wearing pads (please don't mistake these for direct quotes, and forgive the typos): Marv Levy influenced me a lot there ... you pick up a lot of different things with different coaches. I just thought Marv, most of the time started that way .. I thought it helped. He got through training camp with very few injuries, just sta...
Before we get into the press conference, I wanted to share a funny moment today after practice. Wade Phillips was standing on the field and saw Dale Hansen walk by. Phillips stopped Hansen and said that he was in the store the other day, and someone approached him and said, "I know who you are - you're Dale Hansen!" They both got a pretty good laugh out of that. On to the presser ... Phillips has just said for the second time t...
2:35 p.m. A good 10 minutes after practice started, Tony Romo took the field to wild cheers from the AlamoDome crowd. I'm not sure how this factors into Romo's improved leadership skills; we'll see if there's a good explanation. If not, the move clearly sets him apart from his teamates (and I'm not sure how that helps). We'll get the explanation after practice — if Tony talks, that is. The first Cowboys' practice is underway at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Tony Romo walked onto the field 10 minutes late at 2:25. The crowd of a couple thousand gave him a standing ovation. Flashes from cameras put a sparkle on the practice field for about 30 seconds. Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton came out of the tunnel not long after. No word on the reason for their tardiness. ...A new change in the way Wade Phillips does business: special teams first. As they mentioned in the opening presser yesterday, the Cowboys will start each practice with special teams work. Owner Jerry Jones says that's how his Arkansas teams did things back in his college playing days. Given the way the Cowboys special team-ers played the past few years, the "Cowboy Nation" can only hope the time is well spent. ...What a lousy start to 1 of my favorite times of the year ... Cowboys training camp is like springtime to me ... everything looks and smells better now that football is back. But ... but .... I make the trip to San Antonio and the lovely Mrs Hansen forgets to pack my pants --------------- I have no pants! ... or after an off-season, apparently. Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips banged his first on the table during his opening remarks at Tuesday's press conference. When he was introduced to the fans at the "pep rally" Tuesday night, his overenthusiastic remarks were met with fans already streaming for the exits. Here is exactly what Phillips said, in front of about 21,000 fans in the Alamodome. "Well first of all, muy bien San Ant...
