#4 TCU looks to avoid upset this weekend

12:12 PM Thu, Nov 05, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

If Gary Patterson and TCU are going to finish the year undefeated, it's going to be tough road. Three of the four teams left on their schedule still have the ability to make a bowl game.

The Horned Frogs first test will be this weekend in San Diego State. The Aztecs are 4-4 and are coming off two big wins that make a bowl appearances seem like a reality.

"Anytime we have gone to San Diego, it has been a tough ball game...

SMU football players hope to go bowling

1:32 PM Tue, Nov 03, 2009 |
Ted Madden

We were out this morning visiting with June Jones and a couple of the Mustang football players. The turnaround is happening right before our eyes, SMU has a 4-4 record, including 3-1 in Conference USA.

We knew Jones would turn the SMU program around -- that's what he does. And they still have some work to do, because while they've won some close games this year, they've also lost a couple in overtime. But coming off back-to-back 1-11 s...

While Gary Patterson and TCU are stealing all the headlines in DFW, June Jones has the Mustang .500 with a 4-4 record. Check out these photos from their workout on Monday.

Should we have expected anything different from the college football polls?

2:19 PM Sun, Oct 25, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Once again the college football polls have shown how big of a joke they have become.

The mighty USC Trojans have jumped up to No. 4 in both the AP and the USA Today Coaches Poll. With one loss, Pete Carroll and crew are ranked ahead of TCU, Boise State, Cincinnati, and Iowa, who all have no losses.

Now I wouldn't have a problem with this if USC had lost to someone decent, but they didn't.

Frogs take giant leap

12:14 AM Sun, Oct 25, 2009 |
Arnold Payne

The 8th ranked TCU Horned Frogs took a giant leap towards their conference title hopes and a national BCS bid defeating the 16th ranked BYU Cougars 38-7 before a sellout crowd of 64,000 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah.

For the second year in a row the Frogs have defeated the Cougars by a 25 point or better margin. Saturday's 31 point defeat by TCU was BYU's largest margin of lost since a 52-21 loss to Utah November 20, 2004. ...

Deion talks about the Dez Bryant situation

9:49 AM Sun, Oct 11, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Deion Sanders is an NFL Network analyst, and this morning they had him talk about the Dez Bryant situation (Bryant was suspended earlier this week for lying to the NCAA about his relationship with Sanders).

The whole interview is transcribed below, but a couple highlights first:

Deion: "Now the problem w...

A&M vs Ark: Stats don't always tell the story

9:22 PM Sat, Oct 03, 2009 |
Sean Hamilton

After 3 quarters, Texas A&M has 23 first downs to only 11 for Arkansas. 358 total offensive yards for the Aggies. Arkansas only has 282 offensive yards. A&M leads in time of possession by almost 5 minutes. A&M leads the turnover battle by 1. Arkansas has a slight edge in penalty yardage.

But after 3 quarters, Arkansas leads 37-13.

The momentum shifted in the 2nd quarter. The Aggies were looking to take the lead when the Razorb...

Southwest Classic: A&M vs Arkansas

6:27 PM Sat, Oct 03, 2009 |
Sean Hamilton

It's a renewed rivalry, and the first time since 1991 that Arkansas and Texas A&M have met on the football field. It was the next season that the Hogs left the Southwest Conference for the SEC.

Cowboys Stadium is split half and half between cardinal and maroon, with only a few empty seats on each side. There appears to be a few more Aggie fans. And these are some really loud fans... calling of the hogs on one side, and "whoop" on the o...

Wade's podium press conference quotes

Josh Harvey

I just got this email from the Cowboys. I was just about to type it all out when I got it.

Overall Game
"Alright I was proud of our team obviously to come out the second half after things weren't going good although I thought we had a chance certainly to be up at the half and missed a field goal and we had a chance for some other opportunities and they didn't really move the ball too well before the end o...

Felix Jones tweaks his left leg

9:21 PM Mon, Sep 28, 2009 |

After his 40 yard run down the sidelines, Felix Jones was shaken up on the play and went to the sidelines. The whole Cowboys medical staff is working on Jones. It appears from our view up high that they are working on his left knee. More to come later!

No more Twitter for Tech players, still okay for the Mavs

6:06 PM Mon, Sep 28, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

From now on, it will be a 15-yard penalty for Texas Tech players that use Twitter. Odd and often misunderstood Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach has put a ban on his players using Twitter. This comes days after the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that linebacker Marlon Williams asked on his Twitter account why he was still in a meeting room when "the head coach can't even be on time." Williams Twitter page is no longer available.

The college football polls are messed up again

4:44 PM Sun, Sep 27, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Can I get an Amen or at least an email if you think the college football polls are a joke?

There are a lot of things that bother me in sports: the Yankees and Red Sox's payroll, the lost art of teamwork in the NBA, and how the NFL is more about fantasy than your favorite team. What I'm writing about today, trumps all of those.

I'm convinced that about 95% of the coaches that vote in the polls let their kids or grandkids fill t...

Southlake's Tre Newton gets starting spot for Longhorns

1:48 PM Tue, Sep 22, 2009 |
George Riba

Texas running back Tre Newton has earned the right to start in Saturday's game against UT-El Paso.

Newton, from Southlake Carroll High School in North Texas and the son of former Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton, had a career high 20-carries for 88-yards against Texas Tech Saturday night.

Texas Head Coach Mack Brown made the decision after Newton provided a spark for the Longhorns Saturday night. He carried the ball 18-ti...

Thank you BYU

3:58 PM Sun, Sep 20, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

With BYU's loss to Florida State yesterday, we can finally focus on the real non-BCS teams that have a shot at crashing the partying in 2009.

The new coaches' poll came out this afternoon and has Boise State and TCU both in the Top 15. These are the only two teams that should have been getting the attention in the first place.

Blazer football beat writer talks SMU at UAB

10:36 AM Thu, Sep 10, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

SMU won their first opener since 2000 on Saturday night with a win against Stephen F. Austin.

Shawnbrey McNeal, a day after hearing from the NCAA that he was eligible to play in 2009, rushed for over 150 yards on 19 carries.

This week, SMU will travel to UAB for an early C-USA battle with the Blazers.

We went 1-on-1 with Birmingham News UAB beat writer Steve Irvine, to see how the Blazers are looking.

Ohio State's Pryor put himself in Vick controversy

10:38 AM Wed, Sep 09, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Ohio State's tremendously talented quarterback Terrelle Pryor wore a piece of eye black before Saturday's game with the word "Vick" on it. Here's what he said after the game about it.

I've never had a problem with athletes speaking out or having opinions. A lot of people do, both fans and members of the media. I had this very conversation with Kelly Webster from ESP...

Does BYU have a shot? What is AccuScore saying?

1:57 PM Fri, Sep 04, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

We are not even into the heart of week one in college football and we already have thrown a wrench into the BCS' plans. Boise State, who was ranked higher than Oregon, knocked off the Ducks and now have what some are saying a road to another undefeated season.

Could the Broncos be a BCS buster again this January? It's looking like it at this point. How crazy would the world of college football be if BYU somehow upset Oklahoma at Jerry...

BCS mess kicks off the season

10:37 AM Fri, Sep 04, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Boise State beat Oregon 19-8 last night .... and here we go! The Broncos' first game of the season was against its toughest opponent (as far as we can tell now), so they now appear poised to go undefeated and make some noise in the BCS.

I was listening to the Ticket yesterday, and Corby Davidson said that college football fans should be rooting for Oregon, because otherwise we're going to have to hear from Boise State backers all seaso...

No more Metrodome for the Rangers

7:57 PM Fri, Aug 28, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

This weekend, marks the last Texas Rangers series at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Texas is 106-125 all-time against the Twins in the dome. Minnesota tax-payers are picking up the tab for a new open air stadium(Target Field) that is currently being built. The Minnesota Vikings will continue to call the Metrodome home, but no one knows for how long.

Growing up in Iowa, I made many trips to the Metrodome. It was one of the closest plac...

Dodgy situation in Denton

Ted Madden

George Riba and I were in Denton this morning to do a story on the North Texas football team. The situation is bad up there, but appears to be getting better.

Todd Dodge begins his third year as the head coach (he's 3-21 after 2 seasons). His son Riley Dodge begins his first year as the starting quarterback. Apparently, we weren't the only ones thinking Green ...

College football rankings can wait

5:17 PM Mon, Aug 24, 2009 |

There are a lot of things that bother me in sports: the Yankees and Red Sox's payroll, the lost art of teamwork in the NBA, and how the NFL is more about fantasy than your favorite team. What I'm writing about today, trumps all of those.

The new AP college football poll is out and once again the typical powerhouses are ranked in the top five. Florida is number one, well deserving of the honor, Texas is number two, followed by Oklahom...

Oklahoma's Bob Stoops will vote in coach's poll again

9:33 PM Tue, Jul 28, 2009 |
George Riba

The Big 12 media week in Irving had Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops front and center in Irving today. Stoops said that he would vote in the USA Today coach's poll again this year after he declined to do so last year.

Asked why he decided to start voting again, he said "You don't need to make a point twice."

The Sooners were at the center of a controversy last year over who should play in the BCS Championship game. His team finis...

Brief impressions of the four teams who were at Big 12 Media Days today (in order of appearance)

Missouri: The Tigers may be the Big 12 team who has lost the most, with departure of their leading passer in QB Chase Daniel and two leading receivers in WR Jeremy Maclin and TE Chase Coffman.

Coach Gary Pinkel said there is always a concern whenever a team goes through a transition like Mizzou will this year, but h...

Big 12 Media Days: Day 1 Nebraska, Oklahoma St., A&M, Iowa St.

Jon Arnold

Brief impressions of the four teams who were at Big 12 Media Days today (in order of appearance)

Nebraska: This team should challenge for the North title this year, but coach Bo Pelini and his players know that's not enough for Husker fans. Pelini said he understands those expectations, and especially wants the defensive side of the ball to improve.

He also seems confident that QB Zac Lee will be able to lead...

TCU-Notre Dame in 2010 the kind of matchup college football needs

11:43 AM Thu, Jul 23, 2009 |
Jon Arnold

Notre Dame has been in touch with TCU about filling a spot on their 2010 football schedule Blue and Gold, a site dedicated to covering the Fighting Irish, reported Monday.

The game would pit one of college football's perennially overrated teams (Notre Dame) against a perennially underrated one (TCU).

These are exactly the kind of matchups college football fans love to s...

Switzer on Cowboys job

9:34 AM Mon, Jun 15, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

It' s been 20-years since Barry Switzer left OU and The Tulsa World is doing a big series on his departure.

One of the stories talks about his next job: Head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

From the article:
Switzer remembers the phone call from Jones: "Jerry wanted me. There was no interview process. Jerry just calls and says, 'Do you want the job?' I said, 'If the job is open, I'd be interested.' He says, 'The job is goin...

Alabama faces losing wins

12:23 PM Thu, Jun 11, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

The NCAA will reach a decision, later today, which may force the Alabama football program to surrender victories from the 2005-2007 seasons. The Birmingham News and ESPN report that during those years, players improperly got free textbooks for other students.

Alabama may have to vacate at least 21 victories from their record. The players involved in the sca...

TCU in exclusive company

11:17 AM Wed, Jun 03, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU athletic department sent an interesting note out today.

TCU, Florida and Texas are the only schools in the nation this season to finish in the top 10 in football and have a Super Regional baseball team.

The Horned Frog football team finished seventh in the country. Texas finished fourth in the AP Poll and third in the Coaches' Poll and, of course, Florida finished first in both polls.

TCU and Texas meet this we...

TCU proud of their five draft picks

6:27 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |
George Riba

Now that the NFL draft is over, it's time to give TCU some credit. The Horned Frogs had five players drafted over the weekend, that's more than any other college in the State of Texas.

"It goes to show you don't have to go to a Big 12 school to have good players," says Head Coach Gary Patterson. "That's what we're proving all along. You don't have to be in an automatic conference. Our guys are graduating, and they're also getting a ch...

Spread Quarterbacks and the NFL

4:17 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

With the conclusion of the latest version of the NFL draft, it got me thinking. Graham Harrell - 15,793 yards, 134 touchdowns - not picked. Chase Daniel - 12,515 yards, 101 touchdowns - not picked. That's over 28,000 passing yards and 235 touchdowns between the two against Big 12 competition, but apparently they aren't good enough to be drafted.

I realize the NFL has been burned by the spread offenses of the college football landscape...

A receiver who has it together

10:41 AM Fri, Apr 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys are probably looking to take a wide receiver in next week's NFL Draft.

They could do a lot worse than Brian Robiskie, who visited Valley Ranch this week.

The Ohio State receiver is the son of long-time NFL coach Terry Robiskie and is considered one of the top receivers in Ohio State history.

But there is a lot more to him. He's been one of the top STUDENT-athletes in college football.

Kiper likes TCU's Hughes

11:10 AM Thu, Apr 09, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. really likes TCU All-American Jerry Hughes in next year's NFL draft.

Kiper has Hughes as the No. 2 most-coveted defensive end for the 2010 draft.

Kiper ranks Hughes behind only Greg Hardy of Ole Miss. Rounding out Kiper's top five are Willie Young (NC State), Georgia Selvie (South Florida) and Corey Wootton (Northwestern).

Hughes led the nation in 2008 with 15 sacks and six forced fumbles. Th...

Baylor loses a friend in Kyle Woods

10:49 AM Fri, Apr 03, 2009 |
George Riba

Baylor lost a friend last night when Kyle Woods died. He was the former defensive back from W.T. White who suffered a paralyzing injury during practice back in 1979. He was 49.

At the time of his injury, Baylor didn't have long-term disability insurance, so his former college coach, Grant Teaff did everything he could to help him out. He set up a trust fund and bought a home for Woods. Most recently, Teaff helped Woods move into new ...

TCU 2009 football schedule released

5:32 PM Thu, Mar 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU Horned Frogs are coming off of a season in which they finished 11-2 and ranked No. 7 in the country in both major polls. The Frogs' only losses were to two other top-10 teams, Utah and Oklahoma.

TCU has two good non-conference road games (Clemson and Virginia), their traditional Iron Skillet game with SMU and a silly game against 1-AA team Texas State, plus their eight game Mountain West Conference slate.

Here's the be...

TCU's Marcus Jackson is a leaping Frog

2:15 PM Wed, Mar 25, 2009 |
Arnold Payne

In 2008 Marcus Jackson was back-up quarterback for the TCU Horned Frogs behind starter Andy Dalton. In a move to give him additional playing time Coach Gary Patterson decided to move Jackson to the safety position.

Well half of that equation turned out to be a pretty good idea. Patterson soon realized with the departure of Jackson, his team was lacking in experience at the back-up QB position. In the event that Dalton was sidel...

TCU catches OU in football, sort of

6:21 PM Thu, Mar 12, 2009 |

I saw where Oklahoma had their pro day this week and attracted representatives from 27 NFL teams. Not bad, but TCU had 27 NFL franchises represented at their pro day last week as well.

And the fastest time was recorded by Wide Receiver Quintin Chaney at 4.59. TCU's fastest time was turned in by running back Aaron Brown with a time of 4.49.

Get the picture? Looks to me like TCU is getting closer all the time. Now if they can j...

Mike Leach is the best thing to happen to Texas Tech football.

The goofy head coach and the university's administration and regents have to figure out how to work together.

It wasn't that long ago that Tech and Leach were the darlings of college football.

I had a chance to meet Sulphur Springs quarterback Tyrik Rollison who signed with Auburn today, and to think there was a time his mother didn't even want him to play quarterback.

"It's a big position, it's a big spot," his mother Brenda said today. "I asked him, are you ready, because I felt like he had to carry the whole team, you have to be a leader."

That was before he became one of the top recruited quarterbacks in Texas, ...
