Switzer on Cowboys job

9:34 AM Mon, Jun 15, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

It' s been 20-years since Barry Switzer left OU and The Tulsa World is doing a big series on his departure.

One of the stories talks about his next job: Head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

From the article:
Switzer remembers the phone call from Jones: "Jerry wanted me. There was no interview process. Jerry just calls and says, 'Do you want the job?' I said, 'If the job is open, I'd be interested.' He says, 'The job is goin...

Alabama faces losing wins

12:23 PM Thu, Jun 11, 2009 |
Matt Krocheski

The NCAA will reach a decision, later today, which may force the Alabama football program to surrender victories from the 2005-2007 seasons. The Birmingham News and ESPN report that during those years, players improperly got free textbooks for other students.

Alabama may have to vacate at least 21 victories from their record. The players involved in the sca...

TCU in exclusive company

11:17 AM Wed, Jun 03, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU athletic department sent an interesting note out today.

TCU, Florida and Texas are the only schools in the nation this season to finish in the top 10 in football and have a Super Regional baseball team.

The Horned Frog football team finished seventh in the country. Texas finished fourth in the AP Poll and third in the Coaches' Poll and, of course, Florida finished first in both polls.

TCU and Texas meet this we...

Second collapse for Cowboys rookie

McGee doesn't want part of Leach/Sherman feud

2:55 PM Fri, May 01, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

New Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee doesn't want to be part of feud between Texas Tech coach Mike Leach and McGee's former coach at Texas A&M, Mike Sherman.

Watch what he has to say about them here.

TCU proud of their five draft picks

6:27 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |
George Riba

Now that the NFL draft is over, it's time to give TCU some credit. The Horned Frogs had five players drafted over the weekend, that's more than any other college in the State of Texas.

"It goes to show you don't have to go to a Big 12 school to have good players," says Head Coach Gary Patterson. "That's what we're proving all along. You don't have to be in an automatic conference. Our guys are graduating, and they're also getting a ch...

Spread Quarterbacks and the NFL

4:17 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |
Nick Zelinski

With the conclusion of the latest version of the NFL draft, it got me thinking. Graham Harrell - 15,793 yards, 134 touchdowns - not picked. Chase Daniel - 12,515 yards, 101 touchdowns - not picked. That's over 28,000 passing yards and 235 touchdowns between the two against Big 12 competition, but apparently they aren't good enough to be drafted.

I realize the NFL has been burned by the spread offenses of the college football landscape...

A laugh about the Cowboys' draft

11:35 AM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

For a fourth-round draft pick who is expected to be primarily a backup quarterback in the next few years, Stephen McGee sure is causing a stir.

There is this story about Texas Tech coach Mike Leach blasting the former A&M quarterback.

TCU kicks student off sports talk show for having an opinion

10:40 AM Wed, Apr 22, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

I'm a very proud TCU graduate and a journalist.

That's why I was so upset when I read this story from today's TCU Daily Skiff, the campus newspaper.

Here's what happened, a journalism student that served as the TCU talking head on a Mountain West Conference sports talk s...

Why do college coaches have to travel with the team?

I have to share this funny, but sadly ridiculous situation. According to ...

A receiver who has it together

10:41 AM Fri, Apr 17, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys are probably looking to take a wide receiver in next week's NFL Draft.

They could do a lot worse than Brian Robiskie, who visited Valley Ranch this week.

The Ohio State receiver is the son of long-time NFL coach Terry Robiskie and is considered one of the top receivers in Ohio State history.

But there is a lot more to him. He's been one of the top STUDENT-athletes in college football.

Kiper likes TCU's Hughes

11:10 AM Thu, Apr 09, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. really likes TCU All-American Jerry Hughes in next year's NFL draft.

Kiper has Hughes as the No. 2 most-coveted defensive end for the 2010 draft.

Kiper ranks Hughes behind only Greg Hardy of Ole Miss. Rounding out Kiper's top five are Willie Young (NC State), Georgia Selvie (South Florida) and Corey Wootton (Northwestern).

Hughes led the nation in 2008 with 15 sacks and six forced fumbles. Th...

Baylor loses a friend in Kyle Woods

10:49 AM Fri, Apr 03, 2009 |
George Riba

Baylor lost a friend last night when Kyle Woods died. He was the former defensive back from W.T. White who suffered a paralyzing injury during practice back in 1979. He was 49.

At the time of his injury, Baylor didn't have long-term disability insurance, so his former college coach, Grant Teaff did everything he could to help him out. He set up a trust fund and bought a home for Woods. Most recently, Teaff helped Woods move into new ...

TCU 2009 football schedule released

5:32 PM Thu, Mar 26, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

The TCU Horned Frogs are coming off of a season in which they finished 11-2 and ranked No. 7 in the country in both major polls. The Frogs' only losses were to two other top-10 teams, Utah and Oklahoma.

TCU has two good non-conference road games (Clemson and Virginia), their traditional Iron Skillet game with SMU and a silly game against 1-AA team Texas State, plus their eight game Mountain West Conference slate.

Here's the be...

TCU's Marcus Jackson is a leaping Frog

2:15 PM Wed, Mar 25, 2009 |
Arnold Payne

In 2008 Marcus Jackson was back-up quarterback for the TCU Horned Frogs behind starter Andy Dalton. In a move to give him additional playing time Coach Gary Patterson decided to move Jackson to the safety position.

Well half of that equation turned out to be a pretty good idea. Patterson soon realized with the departure of Jackson, his team was lacking in experience at the back-up QB position. In the event that Dalton was sidel...

TCU catches OU in football, sort of

6:21 PM Thu, Mar 12, 2009 |
George Riba

I saw where Oklahoma had their pro day this week and attracted representatives from 27 NFL teams. Not bad, but TCU had 27 NFL franchises represented at their pro day last week as well.

And the fastest time was recorded by Wide Receiver Quintin Chaney at 4.59. TCU's fastest time was turned in by running back Aaron Brown with a time of 4.49.

Get the picture? Looks to me like TCU is getting closer all the time. Now if they can j...

Leach, Tech have to work things out

9:39 AM Thu, Feb 19, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Mike Leach is the best thing to happen to Texas Tech football.

The goofy head coach and the university's administration and regents have to figure out how to work together.

The Board of Regents is holding a special meeting tomorrow to discuss their head football coach, but it shouldn't have come to this.

It wasn't that long ago that Tech and Leach were the darlings of college football.

Leach, like all coaches...

QB Tyrik Rollison signs with Auburn

4:54 PM Wed, Feb 04, 2009 |
George Riba

I had a chance to meet Sulphur Springs quarterback Tyrik Rollison who signed with Auburn today, and to think there was a time his mother didn't even want him to play quarterback.

"It's a big position, it's a big spot," his mother Brenda said today. "I asked him, are you ready, because I felt like he had to carry the whole team, you have to be a leader."

That was before he became one of the top recruited quarterbacks in Texas, ...

TCU Linebacker Robert Henson Has Big Draft Day Dreams

8:51 AM Tue, Jan 20, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

If you're friends with Robert Henson on Facebook, you know one thing; most of his posts are about working hard. That is what the graduating TCU senior linebacker is doing these days. Labeled by some NFL scouts as only a special teams guy, Henson is currently working six to seven hours a day to prove them wrong.

"I really feel like I'm an every down linebacker," Henson stated. "I'm not saying that to be conceited or cocky, but I really ...

TCU kicker born without full arm receives Rudy Award

9:07 PM Mon, Jan 12, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

TCU kicker Drew Combs is an inspiration.

Now he has received an honor from another inspirational football player.

Combs was born with a left arm that ends just below the elbow.

But he story is deeper. Combs planned to play at Arkansas, where he his dad was also a walk-on.

There, though, he was referred to as a "handicap kicker" and wasn't given a shot to really contribute.

He transferred to TCU and s...

Why Tim Tebow is my favorite college football player, ever

8:41 AM Fri, Jan 09, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

I don't think I've ever seen a college football player I enjoy watching more than Tim Tebow.

I could care less about the Florida Gators, but I found myself cheering loudly for them last night.

To see Tebow orchestrate that fourth quarter, game-sealing touchdown drive was something special.

He defined being in the zone. He drilled pass after pass down field. He would not allow his team to lose.

What I like most...

Patterson a good fit at TCU

5:20 PM Thu, Jan 08, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

I love watching Gary Patterson during TCU games.

If nothing, he is entertaining.

It's also part of why he is such a good fit at TCU. He's a David going up against Goliath.

Patterson likes to say he takes young men other schools don't want, coaches 'em up and beats the team that thought the kids were too small and too slow.

TCU signed Patterson to a 5-year extension today. He'll make a reported $1.7 millions a ...

OU-Florida preview

3:13 PM Thu, Jan 08, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Just a few hours before kickoff, I had a few thoughts about the game...

Normally, when a great offense plays a great defense, the defensive team wins. It's like baseball -- good pitching almost always beats good hitting.

Florida's defense ranks 7th in the nation; Oklahoma's is 62nd.

The disparity between offenses isn't nearly as much: the Gators are rank 19th in total offense, while OU is third.

But by far the ...

TCU and Mountain West Conference Need Patience

7:34 PM Wed, Jan 07, 2009 |
George Riba

The potential law suit by Utah's Attorney General against the BCS seems a little far fetched, especially since all eleven conferences are really part of the BCS already. The only trouble for TCU and teams in the conferences which don't have automatic berths is that it's tough to ever play for a championship, but it is possible.

TCU Athletic Director Dr Daniel Morrison Junior says the conferences are basically restacked or prioritized...

Ex-Baylor coach Guy Morriss has a new job

3:18 PM Wed, Jan 07, 2009 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Baylor head football coach and TCU alum Guy Morriss is now the head football coach at Texas A&M Commerce.

Since his firing at Baylor the former Kentucky head coach has been the associate head coach at Kentucky State.

I don't know much about the A&M Commerce program, but the football program has produced at least a couple former Dallas Cowboys: Harvey Martin and Wade Wilson, now the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach.

Hard to Care About Bowls With BCS Mess

12:07 PM Mon, Jan 05, 2009 |
David Marcus

Do you know any other sport where a team that plays in a non-championship game can still win the championship?

Welcome to the wonderful world of the BCS.

The Texas Longhorns will face Ohio State tonight, knowing if they happen to win big and the Sooners and Gators are less than spectacular in the BCS Title Game, they could finish number-1 in the Associated Press.

But what good is this, really? They're bragging...

Slingin' Sammy Baugh greatest football player ever

11:00 AM Thu, Dec 18, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

In a blog just last week I talked about some of the greats in football and especially two early pioneers of the passing game who helped shape the NFL as we know it.

We lost one yesterday.

Slingin' Sammy Baugh starred at TCU before being a first-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins. He was part of the first Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

TCU's Patterson the next Auburn coach?

10:20 AM Fri, Dec 12, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

According to ESPN.com and other various media reports, Coach Gary Patterson has interviewed with Auburn University. Multiple sources would neither confirm nor deny the reports yesterday.

This is not the first time this season it has been reported that Patterson was talking with other schools. After TCU's loss to Utah, GoPowerCats.com reported that Patterson had a deal in place and would become the next head coach at Kansas State. The ...

Why I hate the Heisman

2:18 PM Thu, Dec 11, 2008 |
Ted Madden

The Heisman Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in all of sports, but the only realistic candidates to win it are quarterbacks and running backs who play for a top-10 team, and until last year, are at least in their junior year of college. I hate the fact that the most-revered award in sports is attainable to only a handful of players every year.

I did a quick count: coming into this season, there have been 73 Heisman winne...

Patterson Should Be The Nation's Coach Of The Year

9:29 AM Sat, Dec 06, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

If I had a vote in the 2008 Paul Bryant Award (Coach of the Year), it would be going to TCU coach Gary Patterson. While coaches like Kyle Whittingham -Utah, Nick Saban - Alabama, Mike Leach - Texas Tech, Mack Brown - Texas, and Bob Stoops- Oklahoma all had great years, it was Patterson that did the best coaching job.

In his eighth season as headman for the Frogs, Patterson led TCU to a 10-2 regular season record and currently a No. 1...

BCS nonsense

12:07 PM Tue, Dec 02, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Any conversation or debate about the BCS system needs to begin with a variation of this statement: The system sucks and needs to be changed. I really think it's important to remember this while talking about the BCS; the fact that we have to debate this is ridiculous. I imagine myself in 30 years explaining to my kids: "First, they used a system called the BCS, a combination of computer polls and human polls, to determine the best two teams in...

In a Just World, Longhorns Surpass Sooners in BCS

1:38 PM Fri, Nov 28, 2008 |
David Marcus

Nearly everyone agrees, the BCS is a joke. I'm sorry, but deciding the outcome of a game of blood, sweat and tears that is played by humans should not be left up to a computer. If any sport deserves a playoff system, it is college football....where we should teach the young stars of tomorrow that we don't live in a corrupt world.

But, I digress. The Longhorns have logic and fairness on their side in their BCS "argumen...

Cowboys' Martellus Bennett always entertaining

1:06 PM Thu, Nov 13, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett is always entertaining, if nothing else.

The rookie from Texas A&M had some fun giving a reporter a hard time because he is a UT fan. The conversation then became a heated discussion of college football between Bennett and reporters in a Cowboys locker room with more than double the number of media folks to players.

For the record, Bennett is happy UT probably won't be going to the n...

Who Could Come Calling For Coach Patterson?

2:39 PM Mon, Nov 10, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

With recent false rumors, Frog fans are scrambling to figure out ways to show Coach Patterson that TCU is the best place for him! Would he ever look else where this off-season? I'm one that personally hopes not, but these might be some of the schools that would come calling for his services. Would he listen?

University of Tennessee

Last Coach: Phillip Fulmer

TCU spokesman: Patterson report not true

2:45 PM Fri, Nov 07, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

TCU sports information director Mark Cohen says there is "no truth" to a report that football coach Gary Patterson is the new coach at Kansas State.

The report from a Kansas State sports website cites several sources that the school has hired Patterson, a K-State alum, as their head football coach.

But Cohen says Patterson and his agent have had "no contact" with Kansas State.

Patterson has been at TCU since 1998, first...

#12 Frogs Lose The Game And Their BCS Chances

12:48 AM Fri, Nov 07, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

In the span of 9-plays and 2 minutes, TCU's dream season took a nightmarish turn in Salt Lake City, while Utah's kept moving full steam ahead.

Utah now 10-0 overall, was down 10-6 with a little under 3 minutes left to play in the game. Senior quarterback Brian Johnson drove the Utes 80-yards, capping off the drive with an inside slant touchdown pass to wide receiver Freddie Brown for an eventual 13-10 victory. Under head coach Gary Pat...

Frogs Avoid Letdown Against Wyoming, 54-7

12:51 AM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

In a game that some were calling the "SMU of 2005", TCU used a school record 226 receiving yards from Jimmy Young, to blow out the Wyoming Cowboys 54-7 on Saturday night.

After skyrocketing up the polls and appearing in the first BCS standings of the year, (8-1, 5-0 MWC) TCU was trying to avoid a major let down against (2-6, 0-5 MWC) Wyoming. From the very start, the superior frogs outmatched the Cowboys.

TCU jumped out to a 14...

Mike Leach does it again...

5:37 PM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |
Nick Zelinski

For those of you that follow Texas Tech football, the quirkiness of Mike Leach never gets old. Well, he's at it again. From doing the weather forecast to giving dating advice, Leach is very unpredictable. This week throws a new wrinkle into the Texas Tech special teams, which has, needless to say, "strug...

Cardinals Offense Finally Converts

5:24 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

The Cardinals came into this game with the 5th best offense in the league, and didn't show any kind of consistency until their first possession of the first half. They had no third down conversions until that drive, and quickly went 3-for-3 right before they scored their first offensive touchdown of the game. The key seems to be "settle down" after a first half that didn't resemble an NFL football game. Maybe we're in for real game now that bo...

Then Saturday you can join us in Victory Park to party and watch the game. Then fun all ...

3:42 PM Mon, Sep 29, 2008 |
Nick Zelinski

I don't think any of us as sports fans could've seen this past weekend coming. If you had USC losing at Oregon State, Florida at home against Ole Miss, Georgia at home against 'Bama, Wisconsin at home vs. Michigan, and by the way the Cowboys losing as 11 point favorites, you need to move to Vegas.

In college football, no matter which way you look at it, parity is here and its here to stay. What this weekend left us with is an Oklahoma...

Big 12: Final Tune-up week before Conference play starts

3:42 PM Fri, Sep 26, 2008 |
Nick Zelinski

Four weeks into the season, the Big 12 is making their case for the best conference in College Football, and this week's matchups provide the final tune-ups before the teams start beating up on themselves next week. Here is the Week 5 schedule plus Power Rankings based on what I've seen so far this season.

1. Oklahoma- Sat. vs. TCU, 6 P.M. on FSN
The Sooners so far have looked like the class of the Big 12 putting up 50+ every we...

TCU-OU game has added meaning with USC loss

11:27 AM Fri, Sep 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Before #1 USC's loss to unranked Oregon State Thursday night, the TCU-Oklahoma game Saturday was an important top-25 match up.

Now it will decide who is #1.

If #2 OU wins, they slide up to the top spot.

But a upset by #24 TCU would significantly shake things up.

The third ranked team, Georgia, has a tough game against Alabama and there are other SEC teams, Flordia and LSU, four and five in the rankings.

TCU's Patterson on taking on OU, more

4:11 PM Wed, Sep 24, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

TCU football coach Gary Patterson is getting his own top 25 ranked team ready to take on #2 Oklahoma Saturday and the always excited coach is his usual pumped up.

Here are his thoughts this week:

On his team entering the top 25 this week ...
"I don't put a lot of stock into that. It's more important where you are in December, and we have a long time until we get to that point."

On senior tailback Aaron Brown ret...

TCU moves into top 25

12:50 PM Sun, Sep 21, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

A day after dismantling SMU 48-7 the TCU Horned Frogs have moved into the top 25 in both major polls.

The Frogs are 24 in the AP Poll and 23 in the Coaches' Poll.

Of course it gets a bit harder for TCU now. The Frogs head to Norman to play 2nd-ranked OU Saturday.

Mountain West Conference foes BYU and Utah are 11 and 17, respectfully in both polls.

TCU hosts BYU Thursday, Oct. 16 and plays at Utah on another T...

TCU keeps the Iron Skillet!

9:22 AM Sun, Sep 21, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

Senior running back Aaron Brown had 15 touches for 116 total yards and Joseph Turner had a pair of touchdowns to lead (4-0) TCU to a 48-7 victory over (1-3) SMU on Saturday night.

With the constant reminder all week of 2005, TCU traveled to Dallas and took care of business retaining the Iron Skillet in the process. The Mustangs wrecked TCU's chances of a perfect season 3 years ago in Dallas. TCU ended up with an 11-1 record that year.<...

Both teams battled rainy and windy conditions the whole afternoon, but it didn't stop either from trying to sling the ball around. Dalton and Stanford quarterback Tavi Pritchard combined for 57 atte...
