It's been four years since Mark McGwire elected to "not talk about the past." Since then, the former slugger has been quiet and almost in hiding. Making very few public appearances and electing to not do interviews. It's all about to change!

Today, Tony La Russa announced that McGwire will replace Hal McRae as hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I don't know how many years I have left to manage, and I wanted to take this opportunity to invite a guy who I think has a very special talent," La Russa said of McGwire.

The move by the Cardinals surprises some. I would have thought that an organization would have wanted the rest of the story to come out before hiring a tainted player.

McGwire will cause an early media distraction in spring training, but eventually the story should pass if he addresses the tough question. If he continues to avoid the subject, it could cause some major tension in the clubhouse. Is it all worth it for a hitting coach?

To be completely honest, is McGwire really even a decent candidate for a hitting coach position? He was only a lifetime .263 hitter. He hit for power, if he didn't strike out or fly out. Does he really have anything to teach Albert Pujols?

I have to get going everyone; the Texas Rangers just announced a press conference regarding the hiring of Rafael Palmeiro as their new hitting coach. Juan González is going to be his assistant.
