October 2009 ArchivesThis from the Flower Mound Marcus and Flower Mound high school booster clubs. It's for tonight's rivalry game, played at UNT's Fous Field in Denton. Kickoff is 8 pm.
Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips says pro bowl defense tackle Jay Ratliff got hurt in practice yesterday. Its a right knee injury, Ratliff listed as questionable on the team's injury report. If he can't play, its a huge impact on the defense. I did a story that ran on channel 8 on Wednesday centering on the improved pressure the cowboys defense is generating. Several of the cowboys tell me it all starts with the havoc Ratliff...
ESPNDallas.com is reporting that Rusty Greer has interviewed for the Texas Rangers hitting coach position. The former Rangers fan favorite is currently serving as the Assistant Head Coach at Texas Wesleyan University under former teammate Mike Jeffcoat. What does everyone else think about Greer being a possible replacement for Rudy Jaramillo? Greer was a .300 hitter in nine seasons with the Rangers, but does that mean immediate succes...
To say that the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills No. 1 receivers have been a disappointment this season, would be an understatement. Roy Williams has 12 catches for 230 yards and a touchdown in a Cowboys uniform. T.O. also has only one touchdown with 18 catches for 242 yards. I didn't realize that there such a budding rivalry between the two of them?
Never in the history of sports has eating hot dogs been a bigger story. Move over Kobayashi, Jets rookie Mark Sanchez is coming for you. Does anyone else think this story is just plain dumb? The guy was hungry? He wasn't feeling good. While I can think of better things to eat when feeling queasy, this is not a story. "I wasn't trying to take away from anything the team had going on," Sanchez told the media on Wednesday. "Peo...
This from the webside coldhardfootballfacts.com. I'm just posting it. So whatever you think of this, don't shoot the messenger. But I am interested in your thoughts.
The NFL requires 1,500 pass attempts to quality for "official" league records. Dallas QB Tony Romo, after his team's 37-21 w...
I wrote about this after the Carolina game, and I think it's worth revisiting every once in a while throughout the season. As we all know, one of Tony Romo's goals in the off-season was to work on protecting the ball better. On Sunday, he had his third no-turnover game of the season. Last year, he had only one of those (in the 13 games he played). When Romo's been bad this year, it's been real bad - 4 turnovers against the Giants and 2...
The Dallas Mavericks are expected to be a good team once they get all their players on the floor, but tonight, their start to the season wasn't as good as they hoped. Dirk Nowitzki looked like a one man show at times as he scored points 34 points, but it wasn't enough. The Washington Wizards won the season opener 102-to-91. Shawn Marion's debut in a Dallas uniform produced 16-points, but he got into foul trouble early. Drew Go...
The Dallas Mavericks kicked off another season at the American Airlines tonight. Brue Hornsby played the national anthem which was a nice treat. He had a Steinway Piano at center court. Before tipoff, forward Shawn Marion grabbed the microphone to tell Mavericks fans that the team needed their support this season but he really wanted to wish everyone a Happy Halloween. You might have guessed, he's not very shy. Quinton Ross s...
With their 37-21 win over Atlanta, the Cowboys are now 3-0 under Wade Phillips coming off a bye week. But the winning doesn't stop there. In 2007 (their 13-3 season), the Cowboys didn't play during Week 8 of the season. They returned from the bye and won 38-17 at Philadelphia. Then they won their next two games as well, at the NY Giants (31-20) and home against Washington (28-23). In 2008 (their 9-7 season), the Cowboys were of...
From snap to score it took 8 seconds. It was classic Romo. Taking a risk that nearly ended in no points and a crescendo of boos from a fan base wondering what their quarterback was thinking. Instead, it was a game-changing touchdown that helped propel the Cowboys to their biggest win of this young season. Mesmerizing and magical, Romo eluded a slew of Falcon defenders, and instead of throwing the ball away with time running out in t...
Cowboys linebacker Bradie James says Marcus Spears sack gave the defense a great kick start. The Falcons put together an 8 minute drive for the games first score, but the next time they had the ball, Spears said he took advantage of the Falcons offensive line paying too much attention to Jay Ratliff. "Spears got the first sack and that set the tone," said James. Against a Falcon offense that hadn't given up a sack in 4 games...
The Cowboys have announced a press conference for 4:30 P.M. today. The players had the day off in what is called a "Victory Monday." Wade Phillips just wrapped up his media availability. The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Cowboys have agreed to terms on an extension with linebacker DeMarcus Ware. Ware led the team with 20 sacks last season. At this time, there is no details on the numbers of the contract. Joe Trah...
While a lot of the defensive attention was put on Keith Brooking playing his old team, it was safety Gerald Sensabaugh coming back from an injured thumb that proved to be vital to the Cowboys win on Sunday. "In the NFL you can't hold anything back. When you hold back, that's when the other team's scoring points. As long as I can play full speed, I'll be out there," stated Sensabaugh after the It's been four years since Mark McGwire elected to "not talk about the past." Since then, the former slugger has been quiet and almost in hiding. Making very few public appearances and electing to not do interviews. It's all about to change! Today, Tony La Russa announced that McGwire will replace Hal McRae as hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. "I don't know how many years I have left to manage, and I wanted to take th...
Football in some ways does mirror life. It is a journey, not a quick moment that defines the result. Hopefully life is long and results in ups and downs that ultimately can be judged as having been a success. But since it is a long process, if you don't enjoy the journey you are wasting valuable time. That's how I feel about a football season. There will be ups and downs and hopefully the end result will be a success. This 37-21 victo...
Once again the college football polls have shown how big of a joke they have become. The mighty USC Trojans have jumped up to No. 4 in both the AP and the USA Today Coaches Poll. With one loss, Pete Carroll and crew are ranked ahead of TCU, Boise State, Cincinnati, and Iowa, who all have no losses. Now I wouldn't have a problem with this if USC had lost to someone decent, but they didn't. The 8th ranked TCU Horned Frogs took a giant leap towards their conference title hopes and a national BCS bid defeating the 16th ranked BYU Cougars 38-7 before a sellout crowd of 64,000 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. For the second year in a row the Frogs have defeated the Cougars by a 25 point or better margin. Saturday's 31 point defeat by TCU was BYU's largest margin of lost since a 52-21 loss to Utah November 20, 2004. ...
Cowboy's owner Jerry Jones said yesterday that he turned down an offer for one of his young players before Tuesday's trade deadline and today reports indicate that player was Tight End Martellus Bennett. "I just think that's part of this league and part of things going on the NFL," Bennett says. "I'm happy to be a Cowboy. This is where I want to be so thank you Jerry." The Cincinnati Bengals were apparently the team trying to a...
He's best known as the Cowboy player who once ate a cricket on a bet. And his nickname instantly became "Cricket." I know an almost invisable fullback nicknamed "Cricket" might not hold a great deal of weight to the general public when it comes to his opinion. But "Cricket" might have a point when it comes to the Atlanta game, "We're stronger than they are up front," he told me. "So let's run the ball and impose our will." Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking says there are plenty of people in the Falcons organization that he still cares about deeply, but he said jokingly he still wants to "bash their heads in" Sunday. The Senoia, Ga native played 11 seasons for the Falcons, after graduating from Georgia Tech. He's all about Atlanta football. He's also incredibly emotional on the football field: see his head-butt into the chest of linebackers coach Reggie...
The Cowboys have been awful in the red zone in the past 3 games. I actually call the area inside the opponents 20 yard line "the green zone." Its where pro players make their money. Given that, the Cowboys are in a red zone recession. 9 trips in the last 3 games have netted just 2 touchdowns, and in 3 of those trips, they came away with no points at all! In this offensive-minded NFL that'll get you beat, unless of course, you're playing ...
He may not be the go to guy on the field, but Roy Williams is proving otherwise in the locker room. More honest talk from the Cowboys highest paid receiver today. Its been a little more than a year since Jerry Jones pulled the trigger on what has become a much-maligned trade. He gave up first, third, and sixth round picks and is paying Williams $45 million over six years. When asked about his performance, Williams said, "It's...
We know turnovers and penalties can kill a football team ... so why aren't the Cowboys dead yet? This is a team that ranks high in penalties and low in turnover margin. Start with the penalties - Dallas is 5th in penalties per game, at 7-point-4. And those flags are costing the Cowboys 66 yards per game, which is 4th worst in the league. 23 different Cowboys players have commtted a total of 37 penalties. Floze...
The honors just keep coming for Tony Romo.....Oh wait, the football honors haven't been coming as of late, but he did pick up some hardware recently from Golf Digest. Romo has been ranked the No. 1 amateur golfer among professional athletes. He beat out the likes of people like Craig Hentrich, Jerry Rice, Mark McGwire, Mike Schmidt, Brett Hull, and The off week creates some real problems for critics and experts of the great game of football. They don't have a game to analyze so they have to pick apart what has been done and guess what is coming up next. That's a tough job because the way the league functions, who knows what to expect? Let's start with the off week practice schedule. Wade Phillips has to do what he thinks is right for this team at this time and sink or swim with t...
I'm guessing Tom Brady has been pretty sick of the questions from the national media lately. Some NFL analysts have been saying that the future hall of famer will never be the same after his injury. If you are going just by what he has done on the field, today proves that he is still the best quarterback in the NFL. It's halftime in New England, but the second half really doesn't need to be played. Brady After another disappointing loss, the Redskins can't keep Jim Zorn, can they? Washington is 2-4, and next week they have a home game against Philadelphia. This column was written in February 2008, right after Zorn was hired. The columnist is so on the money with his criticism of Zorn, that it's almost eerie r...
Tiger Woods spent a few days in North Texas the last few days, even hanging out with the Cowboys after attending the U2 concert Monday night. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says he enjoyed the opportunity to speak with Woods, who "talked about being a leader." Woods was at the Valley Ranch practice facility on Tuesday after sharing a suite at Cowboys Stadium Monday night with Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and tight end Jason Witten. ...Cowboys Running back Felix Jones knows the bye week has come at a perfect time. "Right now, I'm just looking at right now," says Jones. Jones hurt his left knee in week three against Carolina, and he hasn't played in a game since. "Well, it's frustrating but this is football, a very physical sport. It's going to happen," says Jones. "It's just how you deal with it and how you come back." Jones says there is a good possibility t...
If you didn't see it last night during the 5:00 newscast, check out Dale poking Oprah with a stick (she's no different than anyone else sitting in that chair when Dale is on set). It was enough to get a mention on the celebrity website, TMZ. You'll have to scroll down a little ways, or just Control+F (find) "Opr...
In the past ten games there is one thing that is clear about the Dallas Cowboys. When Tashard Choice gets touches, he produces. Choice put in another solid performance yesterday running for 92 yards on 8 carries and a score. "That's the story of my career, huh, just making the most of my opportunities,'' Choice told reporters after the game. ``I got in the second half and got to run the football more and got the chance to make some...
Reports out of Austin are that running back Tre' Newton, who suffered a mild concussion, and In his first career start, Miles Austin looked like receivers of the past. Only his performance was better. While it's easy to say that he was playing a winless K.C., no other Cowboys wide receiver has ever topped 250 yards in a game. Austin becomes only the 15th player in NFL history to do it. But more importantly, he might have given the Cowboys some confidence going into the bye week. Let the debate begin. Should the 4th year veter...
Deion Sanders is an NFL Network analyst, and this morning they had him talk about the Dez Bryant situation (Bryant was suspended earlier this week for lying to the NCAA about his relationship with Sanders). The whole interview is transcribed below, but a couple highlights first: Deion: "Now the problem w...
No. 9 TCU opens its fifth season of Mountain West Conference play when it travels Here is what AccuScore is forecasting for the game:
In a recent interview with DallasBasketball.com, Mavs owner Mark Cuban stated that this year's team is better than the 2006 Finals team. While Cuban might be just throwing us all sunshine, it's promising that he would go out on a limb that far. "Trust me, Mavs fans: If we stay healthy, this is a good, good, team. I never make predictions. But our top 12 guys are off...
"Everybody came to a reachable agreement and it happened," Crabtree said, sporting a red No. 15 practice jersey and charcoal gray sweats. "I'm just glad I'm past that part. I'm very humble right now, man, it's a very humbling experience. Just getting a chance to sit back and better myself as a person, as a player, as a teammate. ... I feel like going throug...
DALLAS @ KANSAS CITY Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams, who says he is going to play this weekend, missed his second straight day of practice. Williams is suffering from three bruised ribs. Center Andre Gurode (knee) returned to practice after sitting out yesterday. It looks like he will be fine to go on Sunday against the Chiefs. ...Count me out on the Broncos. Despite their 4-0 start, and despite the league's best defense to this point (6 points per game), I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. And Kyle Orton is the reason why. As a Bears fan, I've watched a lot of Orton, and he's just not that good. What he's done to this point (5 TD's, 0 INT's) is the absolute best he can do -- and the Broncos are still 4-0 by a razor-thin margin. The "immaculate deflection" in week...
Braylon Edwards is a Jet, and Michael Crabtree is a 49er. Those were the big news items that came out this morning. The Cleveland Browns traded Edwards to the New York Jets, in return getting WR Chansi Stuckey and LB Jason Trusnik, along with two draft picks (I'm reading a 3rd and a 5th rounder). Edwards went without a catch in Sunday's loss to Cincinnati for the first time in his NFL career. That night he went out at a Cleveland bar a...
ESPN is reporting that Michael Crabtree met with the San Francisco 49ers about playing this season. The former Dallas Carter quarterback and Texas Tech wide receiver was picked 10th overall by the 49ers in April's NFL draft. Crabtree was the second WR taken in the draft, behind Darrius Heyward-Bey (picked 7th by Oakland), even though Crabtree was widely reg...
Fans, coaches, and Tony Romo himself wanted him to get better at protecting the ball. In 2008, he played 13 games, threw 14 interceptions and lost 7 fumbles (out of 13 total fumbles). This off-season, Romo worked hard to improve his ball-protection while in the pocket, hoping to elminate those fumbles. Who else thought that Romo was playing tight on Sunday in Denver? He looked like a guy trying not to make a mistake, and we didn't see...
Cowboys Coach Wade Phillips said immediately after their loss on Sunday to the Broncos that he wasn't sure why Marion Barber was not getting carries in the second half. Barber, who was coming off a quad injury, had looked almost normal in the first half, with 10 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown. Today, the media found out why "Marion the Barbarian" was not out there. "Marion's quad got tight, so we were limited to just one running ...
Here is what coach thought of the game:
We just received this press release from the Dallas Cowboys: Oct 5th, 2009 This happened for two different reasons. First, Washington only made the active roster this week...
According to ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins, Roy Williams' has three bruised ribs and his status is questionable this week against the Kansas City Chiefs. The injury happened in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos. The wide receiver was reaching high for a soaring Tony Romo pass, when he was hit in the ribs by Broncos linebacker D.J. Willia...
Here's a key battle to watch on both sides of the ball. Left tackle versus outsdie linebacker. Broncos outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil is second in the league in sacks with 6 and will be going up against Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams. Flo's been racking up fines - $25,000 total - 1 fine in each of the first 3 weeks. But offensive line coach Hudson Houck has praised Flo's work on the edge; he's yet to give up a sack this season...

After 3 quarters, Texas A&M has 23 first downs to only 11 for Arkansas. 358 total offensive yards for the Aggies. Arkansas only has 282 offensive yards. A&M leads in time of possession by almost 5 minutes. A&M leads the turnover battle by 1. Arkansas has a slight edge in penalty yardage. But after 3 quarters, Arkansas leads 37-13. The momentum shifted in the 2nd quarter. The Aggies were looking to take the lead when the Razorb...
It's a renewed rivalry, and the first time since 1991 that Arkansas and Texas A&M have met on the football field. It was the next season that the Hogs left the Southwest Conference for the SEC. Cowboys Stadium is split half and half between cardinal and maroon, with only a few empty seats on each side. There appears to be a few more Aggie fans. And these are some really loud fans... calling of the hogs on one side, and "whoop" on the o...
You will want to fast forward to about 1:25.... It's the 89th meeting between the two metroplex schools. TCU holds the all-time lead with a 42-39-7 record against the Mustangs. Here is what AccuScore is forcasting: From the Dallas Stars: Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the hockey club has signed left wing Loui Eriksson to a six-year contract extension worth $25.5 million. Eriksson, who's current contract was set to expire at the end of this season, is now signed through the 2015-16 season. "We are very pleased that we were able to agree to this long-term contract extension with Loui," said Nieuwen...

With the referees rejecting the NBA's latest proposal on their labor contract dispute Sunday afternoon, players and coaches for the Dallas Mavericks are mentally preparing for the lockout to extend into the regular season. "It's really tough," said Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki after practice on Tuesday. "Hopefully they can still reach an agreement. I think our refs are the best in the world and the best in the business so we would love to h...
Watch this video. Slice gets worked by some no name MMA fighter. I hope that it means the back alley brawler is done. I'm tired of his 15 minutes of fame.
Brenden morrow spoke with the media on Thursday after the Stars practice. Dallas get things started this Saturday at home against Nashville.
From Dallas Stars: Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the hockey club has signed defenseman Stephane Robidas to a four-year contract extension worth $13.2 million. This extension puts Robidas under contract through the 2013-14 season. "We are very happy to sign Stephane to this contract extension," said Nieuwendyk. "He has been a rock for this team on the blue-line and is a key member of our leader...
We featured Kevin earlier this year, please take the time to watch his story again. When we talked to him in February, Kevin was a senior at Athens and played on the basketball team. He recently had undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his brain. Kevin was put on hospice a couple of weeks ago, and passed away this morning. One of the Till's neighbors e...
According to several media outlets, Jerry Jones stated that he Marion Barber should play this weekend against the Denver Broncos. From DallasNews.com: "He did more than we thought," Jones said of Wednesday's practice. "I'm glad he's looking as good as he did. I think we made the right decision last week [not playing Barber against Carolina]." More to come later tonight w...
I don't know the answer to this, but I do know that I'm part of the problem.... A couple quick thoughts on Terrell Owens. I think he has the maturity of a 12-year-old, I KNOW that he manipulates the media (in one case it led to him being the lead story on Sports Center), and I thought the Cowboys served themselves well to let him go in the off-season. But then there's this: when we did a story on DeSoto's Corey Borner -- the y...
