Southlake's Tre Newton gets starting spot for Longhorns

Texas running back Tre Newton has earned the right to start in Saturday's game against UT-El Paso.

Newton, from Southlake Carroll High School in North Texas and the son of former Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton, had a career high 20-carries for 88-yards against Texas Tech Saturday night.

Texas Head Coach Mack Brown made the decision after Newton provided a spark for the Longhorns Saturday night. He carried the ball 18-times in the second half and has scored touchdowns in two straight games for the Longhorns.

So far this season, Texas has been using a series of running backs, but an injury to Vondrell McGee is what prompted Brown to lean on him heavily Saturday night. Newton is a redshirt freshman.
