Monta Ellis/Stephen Jackson rumors to Dallas

4:18 PM Mon, Aug 31, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

While there were a lot of rumors swirling around the Internet this weekend about Stephen Jackson coming to the Mavericks, the more logical idea would be the Warriors dumping Monta Ellis' contract into the lap of Mark Cuban.

Ellis is slated to make 11 million dollars over the next four seasons, with a player option for a fifth. At 23 years old, his four year career average is 16.1 ppg. When the Warriors drafted Stephen Curry with the ...

Kitna, one of the NFL's best backup quarterbacks

3:22 PM Mon, Aug 31, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Browsing through ESPN.com, I found a great article by Jeffri Chadiha. It's about the need for a good backup quarterback in the NFL. The article has a lot of quotes from Jon Kitna.

Last year, only 16 of the 32 quarterbacks who started the year, finished the season playing all 16 games. On this list, included Tony Romo. Do you remember seeing Brad Johnson strugg...

2:30 PM Mon, Aug 31, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

The Rangers start a crucial four game series with the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. Texas is now three games back in the wild card, and need to find some wins against a team that is frankly struggling.

WFAA's Dale Hansen will go 1-on-1 with manager Ron Washington tonight during the 6 P.M. sportscast. Be sure to tune in and watch as Washington fills us in on the latest with the Rangers.

Cowboys Monday injury report

1:21 PM Mon, Aug 31, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Secondary guru Alan Ball is questionable against the Vikings this weekend after getting injured on a kickoff Saturday night.

The training staff was looking at Ball's neck after the play, but today we learned that it was a concussion.

"I don't know if he will play this week or not. He had a concussion We are certainly going to be careful with those things," stated Wade Phillips.

Rookie linebacker Jason Williams will b...

In depth: Q&A with Blue Jays Blogger

9:25 PM Sun, Aug 30, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

After going 3-3 in their last six games, the Texas Rangers start a crucial four game series with the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow in Arlington.

Tom Dakers, who runs Bluebird Banter (a prominent Blue Jays Blog), was kind enough to answer a few questions from Toronto's view.

Would Jays fans rather see the Rangers or the Red Sox take the Wild Card?
Well, I can't speak for all Jay's fans and...

Is the Rangers bullpen as good as the national media thinks?

4:34 PM Sun, Aug 30, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

As I drove home from work last night, I was listening to FoxSports Gametime talk about how the Rangers' bullpen is one of the best in the business. On my drive in today, I listened to ESPN's Freddy Coleman tell me the Rangers would win the wild card card wilson.jpg

Young's hit streak goes to 17 straight

3:38 PM Sun, Aug 30, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Michael Young extend his hit streak to 17 games today. It is the third longest streak in his career. He now has 167 hits on the season, well on his way to having another 200 plus season.

If he should get to 200 again, he would become only the 14th player all-time to have six seasons with 200 or more, only Ichiro Suzuki have more on the active list.

More importantly, Texas is up 3-2 in the top of the 8th inning.

Cedar Hill beats DeSoto 44-41

11:45 PM Sat, Aug 29, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

While watching the Cowboys, Rangers, and the Little League World Series, I was also trying to stay up with the DeSoto at Cedar Park game. What a great game to cap off the first week of high school football.

Cedar Hill, ranked No. 12th in the nation according to ESPN, used its kicking game and some costly decisions by DeSoto to record a 44-41 win over its Texas rivals in a game televised on ESPN.

I have to admit, I quit watchi...

The Feldman to Pudge connection is working

11:31 PM Sat, Aug 29, 2009 |

In his last two starts, Scott Feldman has only allowed eight hits over 12 innings, striking out 13 in the process. The man behind the plate, future Hall of Fame catcher Pudge 6dd42053-9aba-461a-9343-a21a3668c857.jpg

Mike Hamlin out six weeks with a broken wrist

11:17 PM Sat, Aug 29, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

According to DallasNews.com, 5th round draft pick, safety Mike Hamlin has suffered a broken wrist. It happened on a kickoff in the third quarter. He will be sidelined for up to six weeks.

"It seems like all our draft choices are getting banged up," Wade Phillips said after the game.

Linebacker Brandon Williams tore his ACL last week against the Titans and Robert Brewster, Steph...

Is Scott Feldman the Rangers MVP?

11:06 PM Sat, Aug 29, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

It's always nice when you get greatness from someone you never expected. It's what the Rangers have on their hands right now when Scott Feldman takes the mound. The right-hander has seemed to get better and better as the season goes on. Not bad for feldman 2.jpg

Cowboys first team plays first half against 49ers

8:54 PM Sat, Aug 29, 2009 |
George Riba

The Cowboys first team offense played exactly one half tonight and the results didn't seem too bad either. Quarterback Tony Romo left the game with 17 passes thrown and 11 completions, but he was a perfect 5-for-5 in the second quarter.

The Cowboys first touchdown came at 7:27 of the second quarter and it came after a 14-play drive of 94 yards. It's similar to what the offense did last week, long sustained drives that lead to scores...

Cowboys host 49ers in second preseason game in new stadium

7:15 PM Sat, Aug 29, 2009 |
George Riba

The second preseason game at the new Cowboys stadium is supposed to be a dress rehearsal for the regular season but so far, it's been a show that hasn't impressed.

A pass intended for Kevin Ogletree was intercepted by Mark Roman and returned 57 yards. It was Tony Romo's first interception of the preseason.

Two wide receivers are missing for the Cowboys tonight. Roy Williams is out as is Sam Hurd, but that meant Patrick Crayton...

Strop nothing but impressive in debut

2:29 PM Sat, Aug 29, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Did anyone else see what I saw last night? Pedro Strop has good enough stuff to be the Rangers' closer one day. In his first major league appearance, the 24 year old went one inning, allowing no hits, and striking out one on 13 pitches. The most impressive thing about his performance was, he battled Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Jason Kubel.

No more Metrodome for the Rangers

7:57 PM Fri, Aug 28, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

This weekend, marks the last Texas Rangers series at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Texas is 106-125 all-time against the Twins in the dome. Minnesota tax-payers are picking up the tab for a new open air stadium(Target Field) that is currently being built. The Minnesota Vikings will continue to call the Metrodome home, but no one knows for how long.

Growing up in Iowa, I made many trips to the Metrodome. It was one of the closest plac...

Random youtube moment - NFL related

4:50 PM Fri, Aug 28, 2009 |
Ted Madden

This is one of my all-time favorite commercials. It ran last year, leading up to the NFL season.

Anyway, as I was watching it again, I wondered, How did the guys featured in this commercial do in the 2008 season? Remember, this spot was created following the 2007 season, which ended with a NY Giants Super Bowl win. Did this commercial jinx those players who starred ...

Official statement on Roy Williams Injury

11:10 AM Fri, Aug 28, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

There's been some misinformation out there about Roy Williams injury. NBC's ProFootballTalk.com jumped the gun and reported sources told them Williams had a broken collarbone and would miss 6-8 weeks. Not so fast.

Williams has said the X-rays came back negative, meaning there was no break. Here's what the Cowboys are saying officially:

Results of last night's X-ray examination of Roy Williams' shoulder revealed no f...

League rules on video boards

11:03 AM Fri, Aug 28, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

The league has released its ruling on the video boards at Jerry World. Keep reading, I've included it below.

The significant change here is that the replay official can institute the challenge (even prior to the 2 minunte warning) so teams don't have to "waste" a challenge, if the officials don't see the ball hit the board.

In essence it's a "win" for Cowboys owner Jerry because he doesn't have to move the video boards. But t...

Rangers take two of three

3:25 PM Thu, Aug 27, 2009 |
Ted Madden

Pretty productive week in New York ...

The Texas Rangerst just put the finishing touches on a 7-2 in at Yankee Stadium, giving them two wins in the best-of-three series. Chris Davis hit a 3-run home run, while Ian Kinsler had one of those, and a solo shot too. Dustin Nippert started the game, had 7 walks (his most in 4 years), but allowed just two runs in 3 2/3 innings - not saying that's great, but considering he gave up 7 walks and 4...

Rangers leading 3-2 in 6th

2:12 PM Thu, Aug 27, 2009 |
Ted Madden

AJ Burnett had a no-hitter going in the 4th inning when he got into trouble. With two outs, he walked Josh Hamilton first, then Nelson Cruz. Then he threw a first-pitch fastball to Ian Kinsler, and all of the sudden it was 3-1 Rangers. It was a good example of how a baseball game that is just cruising along can turn on a dime.

Kinsler just struck out ... Rangers still lead 3-2 midway through the 6th.

Rangers bring up Pedro Strop

10:55 AM Thu, Aug 27, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Jason Jennings is gone. The Rangers have designated the 31 year old for assignment, making room for 24 year old Pedro Strop on the roster. Strop has gone a combined 6-6 with five saves and a 5.06 ERA (36 ER/64.0 IP) in 47 relief appearances for Frisco (AA) and Oklahoma City this season. Jennings was 2-4 with an ERA around 4.15 in 44 appearances.

Strop was signed by Texas as a free agent on Sept. 25, 2008 after being released by Color...

Rangers designate Jennings for assignment

10:43 AM Thu, Aug 27, 2009 |
Ted Madden

How bad has Jason Jennings been lately? So bad that the Rangers are replacing him with a guy whose ERA in triple A was 7.38.

By all accounts, Jennings is a great guy. He was rookie of the year in 2002 for the Rockies. But the secret is out. Jamey Newberg of "The Newberg Report" is one who has been saying for the last couple weeks that what you do with Jennings is avoid swining at the sliders out of the strikezone, and then murder pitch...

Would you pay 14.5 million dollars for a win?

10:36 AM Thu, Aug 27, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

The last 10 innings from the Texas Rangers have not been the caliber of a playoff team, but it's hardly time to jump off the deep end. The Rangers still have series against Oakland twice, Baltimore, Minnesota, and Toronto. All four teams are below .500.

With the no contest last night, the Yankees have opened a lot of eyes around Major League Baseball. They are the team to beat this season. They should be, their payroll is right around...

The lastest on the video boards

6:09 PM Wed, Aug 26, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

We should know something by the end of the week concerning the video boards at Jerry World.

Here's the latest in and e-mail today from NFL spokesman Greg Aiello; sound like its up to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell:

The commissioner has the authority to clarify rules during a season. It's the commissioner's decision at this time. I do not expect anything today. Probably by the end of the week.

And by ...

Twitter time with some athletes

I've turned the corner on Twitter. Maybe not to the point where I'm posting things like "had oatmeal for breakfast ... with raisins." I like Twitter more for what the people I follow have to say, not what I have to say.

Dodgy situation in Denton

George Riba and I were in Denton this morning to do a story on the North Texas football team. The situation is bad up there, but appears to be getting better.

College football rankings can wait

5:17 PM Mon, Aug 24, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

There are a lot of things that bother me in sports: the Yankees and Red Sox's payroll, the lost art of teamwork in the NBA, and how the NFL is more about fantasy than your favorite team. What I'm writing about today, trumps all of those.

The new AP college football poll is out and once again the typical powerhouses are ranked in the top five. Florida is number one, well deserving of the honor, Texas is number two, followed by Oklahom...

Feldman strikeouts 11 batters to lead Texas 4-0

3:53 PM Sun, Aug 23, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

The Rangers bullpen has been suspect at times, but today they were not going to let starter Scott Feldman down.

Feldman went seven strong innings striking out a career high 11 batters for his 13th win of the season, as the Rangers won 4-0. It was Feldman's 9th road win this season, which is tied for first in the Major League Baseball. Since joining the starting rotation in late April, he is tied for the most wins in baseball ...

Jerry World open on away games?

2:33 PM Sun, Aug 23, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

The Ticket's Mark Elfenbein had a great idea on his show today that I have to agree with. Elf thinks Jerry should open up the new Cowboys stadium for road games. It would give fans a chance to watch the game on the $40 million HDTV screen.

When I first started to think about the idea, I couldn't imagine Jerry making enough money to make it worth it. Then I realized, wow the sales would add up quickly. Let me break it down:

Michael Young is on his way to the Hall of Fame

8:34 PM Sat, Aug 22, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

I'm sitting here watching the Rangers game and Michael Young has extended his hit streak to 10 games. It's the 19th time in his career that he has had a 10 game hitting streak or longer. It made me immediately think, is Michael Young a Hall of Famer? Not at this point, but it could be a possibility.

With three hits already tonight (one a HR), Michael Young now has 1647 hits in his career. It's probably safe to say, he will be right...

Jerry should call OLB Derrick Brooks

3:54 PM Sat, Aug 22, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

With Brandon Williams out for the year with an ACL injury, I think it's time for Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones to call former Bucs outside linebacker Derrick Brooks. At 36 years old, Brooks is no longer an every down player, but that is not what the Cowboys need out of him. They need someone who can play a few downs without hurting the team.

Brooks, who worked out for the Saints last weekend, is reportedly in great sha...

Eagles turn down free $10,000 for Vick

3:15 PM Sat, Aug 22, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Tax Credit

The Philadelphia Eagles are turning down a $10,000 tax credit for signing Michael Vick according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The tax credit is given for signing ex-cons. Do you think Jerry would let $10,000 go that easy?

Vick is due $1.6 million this season. The tax credit would pay nearly half of a percent of that contract or at least a week of dog watchers.

"It was never considered," ...

Impressions of the new stadium

3:07 PM Sat, Aug 22, 2009 |
Ted Madden

After covering the first football game at new Cowboys stadium last night, I came away with two big impressions:

1. That TV is overwhelming. You really have to see it to believe it. A 60-yard screen in high definition. If you've been to a sports bar that has one of those wall-sized TV's that can be divided into 4 (or more) smaller screens, you have a basic idea. But the TV at the stadium didn't have the seperate screens making up a larg...

OLB Brandon Williams will miss the rest of the season

2:30 PM Sat, Aug 22, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Wade Phillips has released that outside linebacker Brandon Williams will miss the rest of the year with a torn ACL in his left knee. A fourth round pick this season for the Cowboys, Williamshurt the knee on a punt pursuit in the 3rd quarter of last night's game against the Titans. He finished with no tackles.

Welcome back Felix Jones

11:01 PM Fri, Aug 21, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

Jones didn't have the greatest night rushing, but neither did Marion Barber or Tashard Choice. What he did have was a huge reception for 42-yards, a play that probably no other player on the team could have made.

Felix broke a tackle, then juked a safety as he bounced to the outside switching the ball to his left arm. For a player like Barber or Choice, they have would not have had enough speed to get to the outside.

Punt hits the Cowboys giant scoreboard

9:14 PM Fri, Aug 21, 2009 |
George Riba

It didn't happen until 7:52 in the third quarter, but it happened. Jerry's scoreboard was hit by a punt from A.J.Trapasso of the Tennessee Titans. Ooops!! So much for thinking it was high enough above the playing surface.

Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones said before the game that plans are in the works to have the scoreboard move up and down, which means they will eventually be able to move the scoreboard higher. But that won't hap...

Marion Barber broke in the end zone at the new Cowboys stadium by scoring on a

I missed the tours they had of the Cowboys new stadium before it opened, so this was the first time I got to see Jerry Jones' new stadium. It's everything I heard it was and more. I saw Gil Brandt, who was Tom Landry's director of player personnel all those years, and even he was impressed.

Lots of space and that may be the biggest problem. It takes time to get from point A to point B. Elevator lines were long and I guess that's expe...

Do we appreciate Marlon Byrd?

8:01 PM Thu, Aug 20, 2009 |
Josh Harvey

As I sit here watching the Rangers lead after three innings over the Twins, I'm wondering if we really appreciate Marlon Byrd. Byrd has two home runs in this game and just made a diving catch that was quite possibly one of the best I have ever seen.

At 31-years old, Byrd is batting .286 with 15 home runs and 65 RBI. Not bad for a player the Rangers are only paying a little over three million a year.

Usain Bolt says he was tired after setting another world record

I love watching track and field events because I think it's the purest form of human athletic competition. And to watch Jamaican runner Usain Bolt set another world record is just amazing to watch. He did it in the 200-meter race in Berlin today with a time of 19.19. That's amazing!

Bolt slashed 0.11 seconds off the mark he set last year at the Beijing Olympics and it came four days after he broke his own 100-meter record by the same ...

Cruz returns tonight to a stacked outfield

4:16 PM Thu, Aug 20, 2009 |

The Rangers have reinstated Nelson Cruz from the 15-day D.L. Cruz has made three appearances in Oklahoma City, going 0-10 with a stolen base. To make a spot for the slugger, Texas optioned Guillermo Moscoso to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Cruz's return could be just what the Rangers need for a spark. Texas has lost two straight games to the Twins where they had a substantial lead after five innings.
The slugger is batting .269 with ...

Jail time for Plax

At least 20 months for the former Steelers and Giants wide receiver. I was talking with our executive sports producer Sean Hamilton today about this ... when Vick went to jail for 18 months, I wondered when was the last time we've had a current, high-profile athlete in his prime go to jail for that length of time? Now Plaxico Burress is going to jail for almost 2 years. In and of itself, that is interesting. We couldn't think of any other supe...

The report is that later this afternoon, the Memphis basketball program will be forced to vacate their 38 wins from the 2007-08 season, a year in which the team went to the final four. But once again, the head coach in charge isn't challenged.

The NCAA has done business this way for years. What would happen if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell were in charge of the NCAA? Would John Calipari still get a free pass? Sure he's at Kentucky ...

Cowboys training camp ends on a quiet note

5:39 PM Wed, Aug 19, 2009 |
George Riba

Did the Cowboys training camp seem a lot quieter to you this year? It did to me and maybe that's a good thing. Their 31 practices in 22 days in the Alamodome in San Antonio are over.

Without Wide Receiver Terrell Owens and Cornerback Adam "Packman" Jones, running around, all the drama from the past seemed gone. Even Jessica Simpson isn't around anymore to create even more drama.

"We definitely needed less drama. The dramatics,...

But for the rest of us, enough is enough. And I've had a lot more patience with...

Nice sneak peak

10:09 PM Thu, Aug 13, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

That's what the 2 series for the Cowboys first team offense provided, a nice sneak peak.

The first drive showed nothing, then the second featuring an array of weapons that will be at Jason Garrett's disposal this season. The touchdown drive covered 71 yards in 9 plays. 7 of the 9 plays covered 7 yards or more, with 6 different weapons doing the damage: Martellus Bennett, Marion Barber, Roy Wiliams, Patrick Crayton, Felix Jones, and ...

Mort report: Vick to Eagles

7:45 PM Thu, Aug 13, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

ESPN's Chrs Mortensen reporting Michael Vick has signed a two-year deal with the Eagles.

Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb suffered and medial collateral ligament sprain Monday.

And you know what the Vick signing means, the Cowboys will see him in the "Wildcat" twice a year. And a talented, albeit banged up, roster just got a little more loaded.

Cowboys out west

2:54 PM Thu, Aug 13, 2009 |
Arnold Payne

The Dallas Cowboys arrived in California to blue skies and cool temperatures. To a man, players have been chomping at the bit to have an opportunity to hit someone other than themselves. That wish will be granted as they prepare to face the Oakland Raiders in the first of four pre-season games.

Many have suggested that the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp has been anything but eventful and is reminiscent of the Hollywood movie "Grou...

Maybe its just me, but I'm expecting more

10:18 PM Wed, Aug 12, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

The Cowboys practice Tuesday was their last real practice-session before the season opener against the Raiders, and Tony Romo and Roy Williams just couldn't get it together. Let's just say after watching that display, the Cowboy nation should feel fortunate the season opener's still a month away.

The duo - anything but dynamic. By my highly unofficial count during team drills, Romo missed Williams 5 out of 9 times, and one high thro...

Wade Phillips says Terence Newman has suffered a slight groin strain. Even though Phillips says it's minor, it's always a concern given Newman's history with this kind of thing. Down goes Jenkins

12:11 PM Sat, Aug 08, 2009 |
Joe Trahan

Its the first injury of a front-liner so far in training camp and the Cowboys are holding out hope its not that bad. Jerry Jones says cornerback Mike Jenkins may have a high ankle sprain - the last thing you want to hear for a cornerback, or any player for that matter.

Jenkins hurt his right ankle during team drills in this morning's practice. He had to be carted off the field after he was helped to the sideline. Jenkins and fellow ...

Wade Phillips was answering some questions about Demarcus Ware during his briefing today (which are getting more and more brief), from Associated Press writer Jaime Aron. Aron said that Ware wants to add more moves to his tool box and asked if Phillips is helping him with that. I'll go ahead and transcribe the coach's answer, because I thought it was interesting.

"I tell him not to do anything, not to make up stuff that -- you know, yo...

Cowboys receiver Roy Williams has been doing a neat thing in this camp ... at least he was until the lawyers got involved.

Technology and the NFL

Living in an era that finds 'changing technology' moving about as fast as the traffic flow on your local interstate, more and more NFL teams are imposing restrictions to 'nip that technology in the bud' for those in attendance of their team's workout.

Rich Dalrymple, Director of Public Relations for the Cowboys earlier this week met with media members covering this training camp to request that we abstain from printing or b...

Bradie James lets performance show the way

5:02 PM Wed, Aug 05, 2009 |
George Riba

Linebacker Bradie James had an incredible year last year, posting a career high 202 tackles. He's only the second Dallas defender to top 200 in one season, second only to Eugene Lockhart who had 222 in 1989.

And like last year when he was a team captain, more is expected from a leadership role this year. "I always talk about guys accepting their roles," he says. "What I know is, I have to go out there and perform real well because if ...

Terence Newman says defense needs to play like Cowboys

4:44 PM Wed, Aug 05, 2009 |
George Riba

Cornerback Terence Newman lead the Cowboys with four interceptions last season and now is getting used to the idea of Head Coach Wade Phillips taking over defensive responsibilities.

Newman says not much has changed. "He's the head coach. You got out and play, that's what you do," he says. "It doesn't matter, we still have to go out and play. If he's going to call it, we've got to play it."

Phillips is certainly more involved ...

This is my 29th cowboys training camp .... and this is absolutely, positively, without doubt the most boring one yet.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I've said before I miss the days when the players would actually hit somebody. Jimmy Johnson's camps were absolutely brutal for the players. But since I'm not a player and I'm not the one getting hit it was great entertainment.

Begging to be Hurd

Begging to be Hurd

Wednesday's morning practice another platform for Cowboys receiver Sam Hurd to show what he can do for this team, and once again he takes advantage. The offense spent most of the day working on the two minute drill and time and time again Hurd made catches - including a pair of spectacular diving grabs that stood out at the best plays of the day. And when he was on the field with Tony Romo he snagged a touchdown p...

Training Camp Trends

11:22 AM Wed, Aug 05, 2009 |
Ted Madden

A few trends I've picked up on while watching a week's worth of practices:

Sam Hurd is catching EVERYTHING. He's been playing better than any receiver in camp so far.

The Cowboys can't go on two. Most times, someone is jumping, whether it's a lineman (and not just Flozell Adams) or a wide receiver.

Every time a quarterback says "kill kill kill" before the snap, it's a run. EVERY time. I noticed it late last week and ha...

Sam Hurd anxious to get season rolling

8:50 PM Tue, Aug 04, 2009 |
George Riba

Cowboy's wide receiver Sam Hurd played in just three games last season which is why he is ready to get this season going. "I consider myself a much wiser guy because I've seen a lot of older guys in front of me," says Hurd.

There is lots of work to be done for Hurd and not much time to do it. "You got to get back into the groove," says Hurd. And that applies to the entire wide receiver unit. "Tony Romo didn't have Roy (Williams) the wh...

"And in the other corner, a 6-4 nose tackle from Auburn ... Jay Ratliff!!!"

Here was the play: Bobby Carpenter batted a Tony Romo pass straight up in the air with his left hand, then made the interception and started running. I looked at the tape a couple times since the play and saw that Colombo was actually in front of Ratliff after the INT; both are i...

More from Phillips

Dale is getting into the mix today - two questions from Hansen already (has to be a new record).

Cowboys PR man Rich Dalrymple met with the media at practice today and asked us not to show and talk about it when the Cowboys practice an odd formation (wildcat, for example). The Cowboys don't want opposing coaches to have a chance to see that until the real games start.

Dale asked Phillips whether he thinks that it makes any diff...

We had our first fight at practice - after a Bobby Carpenter interception, Jay Ratliff knocked down Marc Colombo, and Colombo ...

Gerald Sensabaugh likes the speed of the secondary

5:44 PM Mon, Aug 03, 2009 |

GeCowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh is expecting big things from the secondary this fall. Sensabaugh, who is in his 6th year in the league, has been around long enough to sense speed.

"I know some of these guys are some the fastest guys I've ever played around," says Sensabaugh. "We've got some really fast guys in Orlando Scardrick, Terence Newman, Mike Jenkins and Mike Hawkins, now he's really fast."

Today was the first day th...

Roy Williams doesn't tighten helmet during practice

5:28 PM Mon, Aug 03, 2009 |

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams has a habit of practicing without tightening his helmet strap. So when he lost it during practice after a hit by Cornerback Orlando Scandrick, the questions starting coming. "It didn't bother me none," says Williams. "It's just football."

Williams will be taking Terrell Owens spot in the offense this fall, if he can just hang on to his helmet. "I never keep my helmet buckled because I never intend to...

David Buehler is more than just a rookie kicker

5:19 PM Mon, Aug 03, 2009 |
George Riba

David Buehler is listed as a rookie kicker on the Cowboys roster this season, but apparently he's much more than that. Buehler is expected to be a kickoff specialist this fall thanks to his strong leg which allows him to put the ball in the end zone.
He had 69 touchbacks in two seasons at Southern Cal.

But Buehler is also athletic, playing safety in college and running a 4.57 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. And he bench p...

OK so I'm about 200 miles too far southwest to use that line, but it got your attention, didn't it?

The Cowboys with the 3rd day of consecutive 2-a-day workouts and the offense looked awful in the morning session. It was mostly teamwork in the red zone. In fact, the am practice with more 11-on-11 work than we've seen in one single practice so far in camp. Not good for the guys in white jerseys, though. The offensive timing ...

Cowboys hold unofficial scrimmage

11:51 AM Mon, Aug 03, 2009 |

Practice this morning looked more like a scrimmage. Usually, they don't get into team drills (11-on-11) until the second half of practice. Today they jumped into team very early, and did that for the rest of the session (close to an hour).

Mostly the offense was working in the red zone, although it wasn't working well. Tony Romo threw a couple of interceptions, one in the end zone, and another when Roy Williams and Orlando Scandrick ar...

Kitna competing with Romo, but not for starting position

5:58 PM Sun, Aug 02, 2009 |
Ted Madden

John Kitna has been a very average quarterback in his 13-year career. 152 touchdowns, 151 interceptions, and a 76.6 quarterback rating.

Watching him from a distance, I've always liked Kitna. He comes off as a tough QB who can be one of the guys - a player who's easy to root for whether you're a teammate or a fan. Whatever he lacks in talent or in shiny statistics he makes up for with grit, which in some ways make him more likeable, and...

My kind of ticket

Now the beer will probably be 29 dollars a cup and maybe not that cold ... but I digress.
