Chelsea and Club America will play the deciding game of the pre-season World Football Challenge tour tonight at Cowboys Stadium. The tour gives fans across the country a chance to see top-flight soccer teams (AC Milan and Inter Milan will face off in Boston before the match in Dallas) and gives the teams a chance to cash in on the revenue to be had in the States. Attendance at the previous matches has been high, and Sunday likely will be no different, judging by the few thousand fans who turned up for Saturday night's training sessions. The crowd will be interesting to keep an eye on at the match, as supporters from both clubs are sure to turn out in force. There were several chants going back and forth during training, but nothing too malicious. The attendance number will be of interest as well. Last week's Gold Cup Quarterfinals were played to a sold out crowd, but most of that came from Mexico supporters, eager to see their team in the second half of the doubleheader (the final of that tournament is also today, against the United States). Players and coaches from both sides expressed excitement to play in Cowboys Stadium, saying they had never seen any facility like it. Some Chelsea players fixated on the huge video screens, so much so that they had an impromptu competition to see who could kick the ball high enough to reach the stadiums' screen. Frank Lampard "won" the contest, just before a voice came over the loudspeaker and pleaded with players not to hit the screens. Not that the crowd or the stadium will be more exciting than the action on the pitch, (it's OK to call it the pitch, since the stadium trucked in real grass, right?) but both teams are likely to be a bit fatigued due to the amount of travel miles they have logged on their tour. Despite the fatigue, fans should be able to enjoy a spirited contest between two world-class clubs. Expect Chelsea and captain John Terry, who despite whirling transfer rumors has had a strong pre-season, to take the game and win the Challenge after a well-played game. |
