Former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson is not going to be the new head coach of the Detroit pistons, according to ESPN. Johnson, who has been working as an ESPN analyst since being fired in Dallas, could not reach a deal with the Pistons, who only wanted to give him a two-year deal, while Johnson wanted four years, according to ESPN sources. Johnson is right to want the security. As I wrote yesterday, Johnson would have been the 10th coach for the Pistons since Chuck Daly left in 1992 and the new coach will be the sixth coach in Joe Dumars' decade in charge in Detroit. Teams that are constantly changing coaches are usually teams you don't want to work for. It means you don't have a chance to implement your system and groom young players. As a coach that has taken a team to the NBA Finals, Johnson deserves more security. |
