The Texas Rangers are in first place and manager Ron Washington has a little more job security now. The club is exercising it's option to keep Wash with the Rangers next season. Here's the official announcement: Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has exercised a contract option to retain Manager Ron Washington for the 2010 season. Washington is currently in his third season as the club's skipper. "This was an easy decision", said General Manager Jon Daniels. "We're excited about the direction the club is going under Ron's leadership and we look forward to a long, productive relationship with him as our manager." Washington has guided Texas to a 4.5-game lead in the American League West division entering tonight's game. The team is 33-23 (.589), tied for the best record in the league. Texas has been in sole possession of first place for 33 straight days (including off days), the longest such streak since 1999, when the team was alone atop the division for final 139 days of the season. Over two-plus seasons with Texas, Washington has compiled a 187-193 (.492) record. His 380 games at the helm make him the fourth-longest tenured manager in club history. The only individuals with more wins as Rangers manager than Washington are Bobby Valentine (581), Johnny Oates (506), and Buck Showalter (319). Washington was originally hired on November 6, 2006, when he signed a two-year contract with two club options for 2009 and 2010. His 2009 club option was picked up by the club on August 30, 2007. |
