Quick hits from Cowboys OTA

There aren't a lot of starting spots that are really being contested for the Dallas Cowboys, but there are a few.

At today's OTA, Patrick Crayton started team drills at wide receiver opposite Roy Williams.

However, Sam Hurd, Miles Austin, Isaiah Stanback, Mike Jefferson and Travis Wilson are all not working out today. Austin is a likely challenger for Crayton, but he has to be on the field to show off his athleticism.

Crayton and Williams both made good plays on team drills. Crayton found space in the zone against the first team for a catch and Williams made a nice one-handed catch on a ball from Jon Kitna.

At left guard, Montrae Holland is working with the starters. Kyle Kosier is working with trainers on the side as he recuperates from injuries that forced him to miss most of last season.

On defense, Stephen Bowen started at right end for Igor Olshansky, who is not here. Alan Ball and Gerald Sensabaugh started at safety with Ken Hamlin out.

While opposite Terence Newman at corner, Mike Jenkins was starting over Orlando Scandrick. This is a key position battle. Jenkins and Scandrick will both see lots of time, but, for now, it appears Jenkins is the leader to start.

Ball has shown versatility, playing both safety and corner, but has been inconsistent. He gave up that great catch to Williams and intercepted a pass from Kitna. Ball also broke up a short pass intended for Felix Jones. His versatility should be an asset for his hopes to make the team.

Fourth-string running back Alonzo Coleman had a fumble and Courtney Brown, playing corner, broke up a deep pass directed at Williams.
