This past Saturday, I was invited to play in a Texas Hold'Em poker tournament for charity - proceeds going to the Dallas Division of the March of Dimes Foundation. Thanks to the sponsor Farmers Insurance for letting me play. You can read about the event here. Jaime Aron is a colleague - a sportswriter for the Associate Press - he gave my name to the Farmers Insurance people as someone who enjoys playing poker. Jaime and his family have a special place in their hearts for the March of Dimes - he and his wife Lori's twins were born 17 weeks premature. You can read their touching story here. The twins are now healthy and happy (and one in particular is musically inclined), and they are 7 years old. The March of Dimes does great things for a lot of families - you can learn more about them at www.marchofdimes.com. And for fellow poker players who are wondering how I did .... well, there's a reason I've been stalling. It was ugly - I won a very small pot while in the big blind (had 6-9 and flopped two pair). I was involved in only two other hands - both times I had A-Q - and both times I lost. Anyway, I probably was at the table for only 23 hands total. It was a quick and ugly defeat and left me with that hallow feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you get knocked out of a poker tournament (poker players know what I'm talking about). But I was happy to play and help out in the fund-raising. |
