This was probably 11 years ago now, when we were both up-and-comers in our respective businesses, toiling away in Shreveport, Louisiana. New Rangers pitcher Jason Grilli was a top pick by the San Francisco Giants, whose double-A affiliate used to be the Shreveport Captains. I was a weekend sports anchor at the CBS affiliate. I was out with some of my TV friends at a local bar and we ended up chatting with Grilli and a couple of his teammates. At some point he was headed up to the bar for a beer, and he asked whether I wanted one. My initial response was going to be "no thanks" - he was probably 22 or 23 at the time and I didn't think a young guy like that needed to be buying people beers. Then I remembered that his signing bonus was well over a million dollars, and I ammended my response: "Sure." So maybe sometime soon I'll head out to the ballpark and see whether he wants to recreate that moment. That should make for a fun 10 seconds. |
