June 2009 ArchivesTraining camp is nearly a month away for the Dallas Cowboys, but one key position battle may already be decided. Mike Jenkins says he's the starter at right cornerback, apparently, beating out fellow second-year corner Orlando Scandrick. "Heading into training camp I'm the starter at right cornerback, and my job is to maintain that position," Jenkins wrote on his ...
From the Dallas Stars: FRISCO, Tex. - USA Hockey announced today that Dallas Stars center Mike Modano has been invited to participate in the Men's Olympic Orientation Camp from August 17-19 at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge, Illinois. He is one of 34 players to be invited to the camp, designed to assist in the preparation of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete at the XXI Olympic Winter Games to be held f...
The TCU baseball had it's most successful season this year and, appropriately, finishes the season with its highest ranking in school history, 11th. It has been a good year for Horned Frog athletics. The football team finished the season ranked No. 7. Here's more from TCU: FORT WORTH, Texas - The historical 2009 baseball campaign saw the TCU baseball team finish ranked as high as No. 11 in the final poll of the season...
The Houston Rockets have no idea what to expect from center Yao Ming, so much so, according to ESPN, the team isn't sure if he'll play next season or ever again. Yao suffered a hairline fracture in his left foot in the playoff loss to the Lakers May 8.
The Rangers moves continue. Outfielder Julio Borbon is up, pitcher Willie Eyre is down. From the Texas Rangers Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight's game that the club has recalled outfielder Julio Borbon (#29) from Triple-A Oklahoma City. To make room on the roster for Borbon (pronounced boar-BONE), the club has optioned right-handed pitcher Willie Eyre to Oklahoma City. Borbon is in the starting ...
Maybe it's the younger Mav fan in me or maybe it's because he is tied to the Mavericks rise to success earlier this decade. Or maybe it's after they traded him, the Mavs haven't quite had the same success. I know Marquis Daniels isn't solely responsible for all three of the aforementioned, but, personally, I want to see Marquis Daniels back in a Mavs uniform in 2009-2010. The Indiana Pacers declined the $7.3 million option on Daniels t...
The Dallas Mavericks want to keep free agent point guard Jason Kidd. Owner Mark Cuban said it himself Friday when he

From the Texas Rangers: Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight's game that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Tommy Hunter from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Hunter (#35) is scheduled to start tonight's series finale against San Diego. To make room on the 25-man roster for Hunter, the club has placed left-handed pitcher Matt Harrison on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 24, with left shoulder in...
From the Texas Rangers: Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight's game that the club has reinstated right-handed pitcher Willie Eyre (#55) from the 60-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster for Eyre, the club has optioned outfielder Brandon Boggs to Triple-A Oklahoma City. To make room on the 40-man roster for Eyre, the team has placed infielder German Duran on release waivers for the purpose of...
Today, the WFAA sports team and I were at the Dallas Mavericks press conference to meet the team's new additions, Rodrigue Beaubois (a.k.a. Roddie) and Ahmad Nivins. What was interesting about Roddie was when he was waiving France's flag via his clothing style. He took the look and term of the french cuff to a whole new level. If you took a gand...
The Dallas Mavericks introduced two of their three players acquired in the NBA Draft to the media Friday. The Mavs originally had the 22nd pick, but traded that to Portland for the 24th and 56th picks. Then the Mavs drafted B.J. Mullens at 24, but traded him to Oklahoma City for their 25th pick and a future second-round pick. They knew what they were doing all along. Instead of the one pick (22) the Mavs came into the...
It has been a rough sophomore year for Texas Rangers first baseman Chris Davis. He's hitting .209. What's amazing is that is 13 points better than yesterday. He was batting just .196 heading into his 4 for 5 night in Arizona. And it wasn't just that he recorded his first multiple hit game since June 5 (he's had just nine multi-hit games this season). Davis had two extra-base hits, including the 12th inning two-run hom...
Anybody else stay up late watching this? Chris Davis has a monster game, going 4-for-5, his last hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 12th. That was followed by a solo shot by David Murphy. Texas won it 9-8. Rangers make it two in a row and move 1/2-game in front of the LA Angels for first place in the West. They have a good opportunity to keep this roll going - they have some momentum and will play 4th place San Diego this weekend in A...
Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens is in town for his football camp and talked with the media. Owens was cut by the team in March and signed a few days later with the Buffalo Bills. Here is some of what he had to say: "I'll be the scapegoat. I'm not here it's (Tony Romo's) team." "I'm not holding any ill w...
I said yesterday that the Dallas Mavericks trade with Portland seemed too good to be true: Mavs give up 2 spots in the first round (dropping from 22 to 24), and gain a 2nd round pick this year and 2nd round pick next year. On the way home from work last night, and again on the way to work today, I heard a couple of different radio shows talking about how the trade basically meant nothing. Hosts from both shows said that there is no way that th...
Because every NFL team should have it own "official" hotel. From the Dallas Cowboys: IRVING, Texas (June 25, 2009) - The Dallas Cowboys announced today that the spectacular Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas has been selected as the "Official Hotel of The Dallas Cowboys." Having relocated their games to the newly constructed Cowboys Stadium, the most impressive sports venue in the country, it is no surprise that the Cow...
Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki didn't want to talk about his ex-fiance, Cristal Taylor (or whatever it really is), when he was in Dallas, but he is talking with another German magazine, including shedding new details about the relationship like that Taylor told him her name was Christian Trevino. The article titled "In Love with a Fraud" ap...
Brandon George just posted this story on the hsgametime.com website. Coach Harrell says in the story that he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis four years ago, but didn't tell anyone with the exception of his wife and their parents until now. Sam has always been gracious and friendly in our many interactions over ...
The United States men's national soccer team may have gotten lucky when they made it through to the Confederations Cup semifinal on a tiebreaker, but they certainly made the most of the opportunity. The team knocked off Spain, the reigning European Champion 2-0 Wednesday. After the team's lethargic loss to Brazil last week, many fans and journalists were calling for the firing of Coach Bob Bradley. Now, after a 3-0 victory agai...
Just got this from the Dallas Mavericks PR office: Mavs trade their 22nd overall pick to Portland, and receive the 24th and 56th overall picks, plus another 2nd round pick in 2010. It sounds too good to be true; I actually e-mailed a friend of mine with the Mavs to clarify. Hard to believe the Mavericks get two additional picks and only have to drop down two spots in the first round. Then again, I'm no NBA draft expert. Here's the news...
This past Saturday, I was invited to play in a Texas Hold'Em poker tournament for charity - proceeds going to the Dallas Division of the March of Dimes Foundation. Thanks to the sponsor Farmers Insurance for letting me play. You can read about the event here. Jaime Aron is a colleague - a sportswriter for the Associate Press - he gave my name to the Farmers Insurance peop...
The Texas Rangers are still in first place in the AL West. But... The LA Angels of Anaheim are just a game back, despite losing their last three games. After tying the Dodgers for the best record for the month of May in MLB (20-9), the Rangers are just 7-11 so far in June. So now we're faced with the eternal question, it seems: Are the...
The Dallas Mavericks are inviting all you MFFL to enjoy a free watch party for the NBA Draft. Here's more from the Mavs: On Thursday, June 25th, the Mavs will host a Draft Party for Mavs fans at the Chili's located on the AT&T Plaza at American Airlines Center. Fans can come out to watch the Draft and see who the Mavs select wi...
It took 5 days and 2 weather suspensions, but the 109th U.S. Open is finally complete at the Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, New York. While, it seemed to take forever to play this tournament, the lack of drama until today left many, including myself, longing for a more exciting finish. Today, I feel we got that. First of all, we had an unknown leader in Rickey Barnes. The 519th ranked player in the World had a 6 shot lead at on...
Prior to this weekend, I really didn't know the answer to this question either. A few fast facts about Lucas Glover, our new US Open champion: He has one career win, in 2005 at the Funai Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort. Glover was 23-under par and won $792,000. Glover was a 3-time All America at Clemson, from 1998-2001. He and his grandfather Dick Hendley are the first grandfather-grandson combo in Clemson's hall of fam...
Its always interesting to watch American and National League teams play each other during the regular season. Interleague games are fun, different; and above all, very important to watch. These games can really put a team's batting or pitching performance to the test. The NL has the better pitchers and the AL has the better hitters. A lot of this would have to be due to the major difference between both leagues where the NL uses its pi...
As the 2009 U.S. Open took its final strokes, North Texas' Hunter Mahan struggled in his efforts to keep alive and bring the trophy back to his home in Plano. He finished at an even par and had consistent numbers throughout the match. In the end, neither the greens, nor the pins, were friendly to him. There was one moment ...
Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle La'Roi Glover is retiring after 13 seasons in the NFL. "I'm blessed that I was able to play this game that I love for so long. It has been such an incredible journey. The players, coaches, and front office staff in the cities I've played have all given me so many great memories," Glover said in a news release. "I still love the game with the same passion I had as a young player in high school, so...
Most of the time baseball provides a slow death. The sudden walk-off varieties are not the norm, but perhaps the Rangers found the most dis-heartening of all the walk-off losses. If its a walk-off homer, in most cases, the guy made a great play, and ripped it out of the ballpark. You tip your hat and get ready to play the next day. Yeah, tough on the pitcher, but you just keep going. But in Saturday night's case, reliever Ja...
We're less than a week away from the 2009 NBA Draft, and analysts continue to label the class of 2009 as "weak." This class certainly isn't as strong as the class of 2003, and it's doubtful any class ever will be, but there are still lots of players who can help teams who are just one or two pieces away from winning a championship. That, coupled with the potential shuffling of lots of big name players, should make sure that the 2009 o...
June 19, 1999. Do you remember what happened on that day which just happens to be 10 years ago? The Dallas Stars won the franchise's first and only Stanley Cup in dramatic fashion with Brett Hull's goal at 14:51 of the 3rd overtime in Buffalo against the Buffalo Sabres. I remember watching this game, at age 14, while on vacation in a hotel in New Mexico. I wasn't in New Mexico for vacation; it was a stopping point on the way ...
Mark Cuban still isn't planning on buying the Chicago Cubs. The Dallas Mavericks owner told ESPN he has "no plans to get back in the mix" for the Cubbies. A few days ago I heard Cuban say similar things on a radio show. He said the move didn't make financial sense for him at this time. ...
The Dallas Cowboys' three-day minicamp is over so it's time to take a look at who helped their cause. You can't tell a whole lot about players when they're not wearing pads, but you can certainly tell who is making plays and is catching the coaches' eyes. Winners: Patrick Crayton: The guy who is always fluctuating between second and third wide receiver had a strong minicamp. Crayton runs good routes and After the Rangers 3 game sweep in May over Houston, it was inevitable Texas would bring the Silver Boot back to Arlington for a 3rd straight year. Now, with silver boot in hand, the Rangers will go for a first in the Lone Star Series. Since the series started in 2001, no team has won more than 4 of the 6 games played against each other. The Rangers have gone 4-2 against Houston twice (2005, 2007) while Houston has done it 3 times (2002...
The Dallas Cowboys just ended their minicamp. Here's the archive of my chat about the team. ... Matt Harrison is back with the Rangers and gets the start tonight, while Warner Madrigal (with his 10.13 ERA) is going back to triple-A. Here's more from the Texas Rangers: Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight's game that the club has reinstated left-handed pitcher Matt Harrison from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster for Harrison, the club has optioned right-handed pitcher ...
The Dallas Cowboys are having a hard time doing one of the most fundamental things in football: Snapping the ball. The center-quarterback exchange is how every play starts. If you can't do that, you can't do anything. Well Cory Proctor and Jon Kitna cannot connect. They just bobbled an exchange. It's been a consistent problem during minicamp. Before and after most of the practice sessions the centers and quarterbacks h...
Cowboys coach Wade Phillips is changing, but isn't. That's about how he said it during his chat with the media Wednesday. You'll remember after the Cowboys season ended with that ugly blowout loss to the Eagles with a playoff spot on the line that Phillips vowed to change. So has he? "I'm not going to change my personal...
From the Dallas Mavericks: Irving, TX - 103.3 ESPN and the Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have agreed to a four-year extension of their radio play-by-play agreement. 103.3 ESPN, which debuted in April 2001, has broadcast Mavs games since the 2001-02 season, and the network and team will now be together through 2012-13. In that time, the Mavericks have had a team record 9 years of 50 plus wins and made it to the NBA Finals ...
Cowboys coach Wade Phillips hopes his team maintains focus in the nearly six weeks until the team begins training camp in San Antonio. "We've got a ways to go," Phillips said of his team's work in minicamp. He says the players will continue to work in the team's conditioning program and coaches will stay in contact with their players. "I think mentally and physically you have to be ready for camp," Phillips said. UPDATE: Mike Jefferson finally showed up, not sure where he went. He missed some early positional drills. The list of Dallas Cowboys wide receivers not practicing is getting much longer than the ones who are. As I wrote this morning, two more receivers missed the early practice today. Now there are just five receivers practicing (...
The Dallas Cowboys are starting their final practice of minicamp. The next time they take the field will be in late July in San Antonio for training camp. It will be much cooler there inside the Alamo Dome. Luckily, I've moved upstairs to watch this practice from the air conditioned press box at Standridge Stadium. It's currently 95 degrees, but it feels a lot worse on the Astro Turf field with a whole bunch of sun an...
Jon Kitna is a welcome addition to the Cowboys, especially after the disaster that happened to the team's offense when Tony Romo was hurt last season. Throughout most of minicamp, Kitna has looked like the reliable backup they need. He has good arm strength. However, in the first practice of the last day of minicamp, he didn't look very good. Most of his passes were incompletions and he had two picked. Terence Newman...
Maybe it's the heat out here. The Dallas Cowboys offense and defense are having some words. It's been an ongoing theme of minicamp. The latest incident came in six-on-six passing drills. The Cowboys offensive specialists were going against the defensive secondary and inside linebackers. Tony Romo threw a pass towards ti...
The Dallas Cowboys have two very good tight ends. Jason Witten is among the best in the game and Martellus Bennett is a very athletic playmaker. So it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that when the Cowboys started their offense vs. defense in the red zone offense that they began with three tight ends. Rookie John Phillips, a sixth-round pick, was part of a three tight end formation, with Bennett and Wiitten split ou...
UPDATE: WR Willie Reid was sick today, according to coach Wade Phillips. The Dallas Cowboys have been thin at wide receiver during minicamp. Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, Isiah Stanback and Travis Wilson have all missed the entire camp with assorted injuries. You can add two more to the MIA list. Kevin Ogletree tweaked his knee during yesterday's workout and Willie Reid, who just joined the team for this camp, ...
The Dallas Cowboys third and final day of minicamp is underway. They'll have a late morning practice and an afternoon workout. The main point of this three-day camp, according to coach Wade Phillips, is to set the foundation for training camp. We're not going to learn a whole lot from these sessions, but it's a good place to set the tone. ...From the Texas Rangers: Toby Harrah, the Rangers first all-star who excelled at three infield positions, and Ruben Sierra, a powerful switch-hitter who captured the club's player of the year award four times in a five-year span, have been elected as the 2009 class of the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame, it was announced today. The Cowboys are having a little fun ribbing each other. The first team offense was working on their red zone package and quarterback Tony Romo was going through his reads. It would have been a delay of game and coach Wade Phillips even called timeout and sent the offense back to the huddle. Then they tried again, again with a delay. So safety Ken Hamlin yelled out that the offense was taking too long. ...
It's tough to play football without pads, but that's what the Cowboys are trying to do in this minicamp. So what happens is a young player, eager to prove he can play, takes a basic running play and runs all over the field running into players. Keon Lattimore did that on a running play in team drills and ran into Terence Newman, whose apparent instinct was to try an tackle Lattimore. He thought better of it and let Lattimore ...
Patrick Crayton has a great opportunity in this minicamp to make himself the clear No. 2 receiver opposite Roy Williams. Many of those in competition with Crayton are not participating in this camp. Crayton is also playing very well. He just made a nice grab on an intermediate route, the kind of route that best utilizes his skills. He's not a big, physical or speed receiver. His ability is to be able to find creases in the de...
One of the interesting things to watch during these minicamps is what players do when they're not actually participating in a drill. Take star quarterback Tony Romo. In a passing drill, while the backup quarterbacks were working on throws to the running backs (Romo had already taken his turns), Romo was working on covering the backs. He even gave Alonzo Coleman a pretty good shove in tight coverage. Romo seemed to be enjoying ...
The Dallas Cowboys are starting their third minicamp workout, but only their second day of minicamp. The team had two workouts yesterday and will have one workout today. With a fairly consistent breeze, it's not entirely uncomfortable here at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton. Some notables who won't be practicing today are Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, Felix Jones and Igor Olshansky. ...Tony Romo insists he's still having fun, but is fine with not being seen on SportsCenter so much. WFAA sports photojournalist Arnold Payne asked Romo if was still having fun during Romo's chat with the media after the second Cowboys practice Monday during minicamp. Romo says he feels fortunate to be doing what he does for a living. Then when asked about how he's trying to improve this season, he talked about his foot...
I'm sure you've seen the clips on Channel 8 the last day or so of me trying my best to dance to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." It was part of Top Hat and Tails, a local fund raiser for Paws in the City. It was held at the Flight Museum at Love Field Saturday night. Little did I know the video would close so many newscasts. For the record, the judges of Kellie ...
The Dallas Cowboys want to improve their punt unit, so much so they've brought in a second punter just so they can do some extra work. Pro Bowl punter Mat McBriar is back from his broken foot and is punting well, but the team still brought in Matt Fodge to pooch the ball around. Fodge won the Ray Guy Award as the best punter in college last year at Oklahoma State, but he's clearly not at the same level as McBriar. The Garland H...
Paralyzed Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant Rich Behm was at the Cowboys morning practice session for the start of minicamp. Behm was paralyzed May 2 in the team's Valley Ranch practice bubble collapse. He was in the press box Monday at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton, where the Cowboys are holding practices since the incident. Head coach Wade Phillips says he expects Behm to return to work some soon. ...We've been talking a lot about the Cowboys running back depth and maybe that's really a good thing. Felix Jones will miss the Cowboys afternoon practice of minicamp today with calf contusion, according to coach Wade Phillips. Jones and starter Marion Barber both missed time last season with injuries. Tashard Choice is the No. 3 running back. It's pretty steamy at Cowboys minicamp in Carrollton. Part of the reason it's so unpleasant is because it's on AstroTurf with a track surrounding it. An intern with the Cowboys video department here was overcome by the heat and fainted. He's doing OK now, was laughing and is walking off the field with Brad Sham. The Cowboys training staff rushed over to give him water and make sure he is was fine. Several members of the media...
One of the big things we're watching during the Cowboys minicamp is the way Tony Romo and wide receiver Roy Williams play together. Williams came to the Cowboys in a mid-season trade last year and the two never really jelled. Now Terrell Owens is gone and Williams is the primary outside threat. They connected on about a 35-yard deep pass. Williams made a nice over the shoulder grab before being knocked to the turf by Pa...
If Greg Ellis really wanted to win a Super Bowl that's probably not going to happen now. Ellis spent 11 seasons with the Cowboys and never won a playoff game and is now going to be an Oakland Raider. Read more from Calvin Watkins at fanhouse. ...A few Cowboys are still not practicing to start the team's mandatory minicamp. Not participating are wide receivers Sam Hurd, Miles Austin, Travis Wilson and Isaiah Stanback; kicker Nick Folk; linebacker Justin Rogers; tight end Rodney Hannah; defensive end Igor Olshansky; nose tackle Tim Anderson; and guard Kyle Kosier. Also there are two new Cowboys wide receiver Willie Reid, who has spent time with the two Pennsylvania team...
The father of Dallas Cowboys head coach (and defensive coordinator) Wade Phillip is here. Of course that is Bum Phillips the former Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints head coach. Bum is here in his famous Cowboys had and blue jeans. ...Dallas Cowboys PR Director Rich Dalyrmple told the assembled media this morning, just before the start of the team's minicamp that they do not want us discussing any of the team's special formations and personnel used. Otherwise, he said, the team will have to make those portions of workouts off limits. Previously, there were no rules on reporting on such things so It' s been 20-years since Barry Switzer left OU and The Tulsa World is doing a big series on his departure. One of the stories talks about his next job: Head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. From the article:
2-6-4.
That's FC Dallas' current record. In soccer terms, it translates to ten points through 12 games, which puts the team third from the bottom of Major League Soccer. They face the hated Houston Dynamo Saturday at Pizza Hut Park in the Battle for 'El Capitán', a cannon that serves as a rivalry trophy in the series between MLS' two Texas teams. FC Dallas enters the match unbeaten in their last four, b... We always hear how great game 7's are. And they can be great, although tonight's in the Stanley Cup Finals probably won't be. Detroit is 11-1 at home in this playoff season, and in the history of the NHL, the home team has won 12 of 14 game 7's. I'll be pulling for Pittsburgh because rooting for Detroit in hockey is like rooting for the Yankees or Darth Vader and the Evil Empire. So the Pens will have me on their side, and hopefully th...
The Atlanta Falcons have released quarterback Michael Vick. It's not a surprise since he was incarcerated for bankrolling a dogfighting operation and will be released from his 23-month sentence July 20. There's a couple important things to note, though. First is that Vick would still have to be reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, which is not a sure thing anytime soon. Then there's the Falcons, who had a gre...
The NCAA will reach a decision, later today, which may force the Alabama football program to surrender victories from the 2005-2007 seasons. The Birmingham News and ESPN report that during those years, players improperly got free textbooks for other students. Alabama may have to vacate at least 21 victories from their record. The players involved in the sca...
That didn't take long. Dave Tippett is out as head coach of the Dallas Stars and Marc Crawford is in. New Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club hired Crawford, 48, to be the 20th head coach in franchise history. Nieuwendyk was hired May 31. Crawford is the 16th winningest coach in NHL history with 470 career victories, and has also coached the 15th most games in league history at 987, over 13 season...
Ruben Sierra was one of the most popular players for the Texas Rangers and also one of the most prolific. The All-Star outfielder played in 1,190 games for the Rangers and is fourth all-time in club history with 180 home runs. Now his son is part of the Rangers organization. Outfielder Ruben Sierra Jr. was drafted by the Rangers with 184th pick in the MLB Draft today. The 18-year-old was sixth-round selection is a 6-2, 180-pou...
There's a lid on the firing of Stars Head Coach Dave Tippett. No one is returning calls and nobody is talking about the report of his firing. I'm wondering if this is the way the team will do business from now on since Joe Nieuwendyk took over as General Manager. Maybe the rookie general manager needs a crash course in public relations. The few ...
Ron Washington, the guy who is about to be fired about every May, who has only been the Rangers manager for a little more than two and a half years and whose winning percentage is .490 is now the longest tenured coach of a pro sports team in Dallas-Fort Worth. Ron Washington. I know, I'm having a hard time believing it too. Nothing against Washington, I like him. But he still seems like the new guy and now he's the old pro. Was...
I'd like to begin with a qualifying statement: I do not cover the Dallas Stars regularly enough to claim to be any kind of authority on them, but like anyone else, I have some first impressions. The firing seems a little out of left field. Just over a year ago, the Stars made a run into the Western Conference Finals, where they were eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup champs (Detroit). The 2008-09 season began with Sean Avery infect...
Dave Tippett has b...
If you're wondering why the Texas Rangers were able to draft left handed pitcher Matthew Purke while others shied away, it might be because of his representation. No it's not Scott Boras, but instead it's Sports Select Group (SSG) based in Houston. SSG became a partner of the Sanders Morris Harris Group (SMHG) in December 2004. Part owner of SMH...
This was probably 11 years ago now, when we were both up-and-comers in our respective businesses, toiling away in Shreveport, Louisiana. New Rangers pitcher Jason Grilli was a top pick by the San Francisco Giants, whose double-A affiliate used to be the Shreveport Captains. I was a weekend sports anchor at the CBS affiliate. I was out with some of my TV...
The Texas Rangers used their first-round draft pick (14th overall) to take pitcher Matthew Purke, a lefty from Spring who had committed to TCU. From the Rangers: The Texas Rangers have selected left-handed pitcher Matthew Purke out of Klein High School in Spring, Texas, with the 14th overall selection in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. "Our scouts like Matt's makeup and ability," said Rangers Ge...
The Texas Rangers are staying busy tweaking their pitching staff. That includes signing Jason Grilli, demoting Kris Benson, putting Bradon McCarthy on the DL and promoting Guillermo Moscoso. Here's more on the moves from the Rangers: The Texas Rangers announced the following four roster moves prior to tonight's game against Toronto: • Acquired right-handed pitcher Jason Grilli (#52) from Colorado in exchange for cash co...
New Cowboys backup quarterback Jon Kitna has had a problem taking snaps during these OTA's. We (the media) were out there today for the fourth time in the last four weeks, and we have been allowed to attend one OTA session each week. So we've seen only four out of the Cowboys' 10 workouts so far, but Kitna's inability to take a direct snap has been a disturbing trend. He's probably dropped the snap a half dozen times, and that's just from the ...
The Dallas Cowboys are wrapping up their organized team activities this week and held their final session that is open to the media Tuesday. We have some video and a slideshow for your viewing pleasure. Video: Terence Newman compares Cowboys position battles to the recession.
Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has been saying "we need a new" tight end or tackle, etc. after a would-be penalty. So when Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten had a false start Martellus Bennett replaced him. Well starting right tackle Marc Colombo wanted nothing of that when he had a false start. Rookie tackle Robert Brewster ran into the huddle to take his place and Colombo gave him a big shove and looked to say some...
There aren't a lot of starting spots that are really being contested for the Dallas Cowboys, but there are a few. At today's OTA, Patrick Crayton started team drills at wide receiver opposite Roy Williams. However, Sam Hurd, Miles Austin, Isaiah Stanback, Mike Jefferson and Travis Wilson are all not working out today. Austin is a lik...
Here are the Cowboys not suited up for today's OTA: Kicker Nick Folk Wide receivers Sam Hurd, Miles Austin, Isaiah Stanback, Mike Jefferson and Travis Wilson. Safety Ken Hamlin Cornerback Mike Mickens Tight end Rodeny Hannah Linebackers Stephen Hodge, Victor Butler and Brandon Williams. Defensive linemen Igor Olshansky, Tim Anderson and Jason Hatcher ...Pro Bowler Andre Gurode is the starting center for the Dallas Cowboys and Cory Proctor has been the backup, but other linemen probably know it would help their chances to be able to play the position too. That's why during warm ups at today's OTA Montrae Holland, a guard, and Pat McQuistan, a tackle, practiced snapping the football. Proctor is an OK backup, but Holland has been a starter in league for the Broncos and filled in ...
The Texas Rangers are in first place and manager Ron Washington has a little more job security now. The club is exercising it's option to keep Wash with the Rangers next season. Here's the official announcement: Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has exercised a contract option to retain Manager Ron Washington for the 2010 season. Washington is currently in his third season as the club's skippe...
Just when you think Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has learned his lesson he goes and says something silly. We all thought we were done with troubled cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones in Dallas after the team released him earlier this off-season. Then, maybe just a little too elated Jones during the opening of his Cowboys Stadium in Arlin...
Just finished reading an interesting article on Ron Washington ... wanted to share that with you here. The Rangers are playing in Boston tonight at 6:05, on Fox Sports SW. ...The Lakers open a 10 point halftime lead against the Magic. The first thing I checked was Orlando's 3 point shooting - not good. They hit just 3 of 11 triples in the first half - 27%. That's not the same Magic team that upset the Celtics and Cavaliers. That Magic team has averaged nearly 9 3's a game and they've been shooting lights out behind the arc. I've been waiting for those numbers to go down, as Mavs fans know all-to-...
Today at the Cowboys organized team workout, we got our first glimpse of Dallas' version of the trendy, single-wing, a.k.a "wildcat" formation. The Cowboys are calling it the "Razorback" in a nod to Jerry Jones and running back Felix Jones alma matter Arkansas. Both Jones' salivating, no doubt; Felix especially. He ran the offense with Darren McFadden in college and gave SEC defenses fits. Today the Cowboys version featured P...
I finally did .... yesterday when it came out that the Texas Rangers put Vicente Padilla on waivers, I vaguely remembered a similar situation from a few years ago, when the Rangers surprisingly gave up on one of their starting pitchers early in the season. I finally figured it out. In early June, 2005, Ryan Drese was designated for assignment by the Rangers - he was 4-6 with a 6.46 ERA at the time (he was also the opening day starter)....
It wasn't a great debut for the Rangers at the new Yankees Stadium. Vicente Padilla had "control" issues on Tuesday before being waived on Wednesday. And then on Thursday, the Rangers saw a 5-1 lead dissipate before losing 8-6. Melky Cabrera broke a 6-6 tie with a 2-run shot in the 8th. New York took 2 of the 3 games against Texas. Yankees Stadium is proving to be a launching pad, 4-homers were hit on Thursday: Johnny Damon, Nelson Cr...

From the Texas Rangers: Rangers radio announcer Eric Nadel underwent surgery to address two tears in the retina in his right eye today in New York City. The surgery was performed by Dr. Richard Spaide. Nadel flew back to Dallas this afternoon. He will be examined there tomorrow with more surgery being a possibility. He is expected to be sidelined for at least the remainder of this roadtrip, which concludes with 3 games in Boston, and p...
We just can't get enough of former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens, who now plays for the Buffalo Bill after being released by the Cowboys earlier this off season. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones can't either. There's been a lot of news since Owens left. He took a shot at offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo on his Twitter feed a couple weeks ago: "blame the OC & romo!! but i'm happy 2 b where i am...
The Dallas Cowboys OTAs at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton are closed to the public, but that's not stopping about a dozen people from looking on beyond a fence here at the stadium. I guess if the Cowboys really wanted they could have the folks at CFBISD move the folks out, but it's such a small, quiet crowd that it's probably not worth it. ...The Cowboys ran a couple of Wildcat plays early in their practice today. I was at the other end of the field for the first one; the second one had Patrick Crayton lined up in the shotgun, with Felix Jones coming in motion from the right slot. On the snap, Jones continued running out to the left as a decoy, and Crayton rolled right and threw a lousy pass to the tight end - who looked like he was running a little 5-7 yard out. The throw was low ...
Several Dallas Cowboys starters and people expected to be key contributors are not participating in the team's OTA today. It's too bad because it's a beautiful day. This is the third day of OTAs this week, which is the third week of OTAs. The final week is next week, which is followed by a minicamp. Wide receivers Sam Hurd, Miles Austin, Isaiah Stanback and Travis Wilson Defensive backs Courtney Brown, Mike Mickens and Terence...
The Dallas Cowboys punt return team may have a different look this season. In practicing their punt returns, the Cowboys are often using two men deep, as opposed to the single punt returner they have typically used. They're also working on different alignments moving the up returner around. And, it's important to note, that running back and kickoff returner Felix Jones is working on returning punts. He dropped one, wh...
The Texas Rangers may be trying to move volatile pitcher Vicente Padilla. According to a Fox Sports report, the Rangers have requested outright waivers on the starting pitcher. Rival teams can submit claims on Padilla until noon Friday, according to the report, which says that any team claiming him would assume his...

The TCU athletic department sent an interesting note out today. TCU, Florida and Texas are the only schools in the nation this season to finish in the top 10 in football and have a Super Regional baseball team. The Horned Frog football team finished seventh in the country. Texas finished fourth in the AP Poll and third in the Coaches' Poll and, of course, Florida finished first in both polls. TCU and Texas meet this we...
Former Cowboys' linebacker Greg Ellis says the past 24 hours have been hectic and chaotic. Ellis says he's been inundated with phone calls from his friends. "It's good to know so many people in Dallas care about me to send a text, send an email," says Ellis. He was a guest on Good Morning Texas. Ellis says his agent has already been contacted by four teams, mostly from the West Coast because the East Coast offices had...
The Texas Rangers are juggling their roster as they head into an important stretch of their season, starting tonight in New York. Josh Hamilton is on the disabled list, while Vicente Padilla and Brandon Boggs are back on the major league roster. From the Texas Rangers: The Texas Rangers announced the follow...
The Dallas Cowboys have canceled the media access to the team's organized team activity scheduled for today. The team has been practicing Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the past couple of weeks, with the Tuesday portion open to the media. A team spokeswoman announced that due to the rainy weather and a change in the practice schedule, Tuesday's OTA workout will not be open to the media. They will let us know ...

Here's more from TCU: Coming off a historical win Sunday night, the TCU Horned Frogs continue their postseason run beginning Saturday night against the tournaments No. 1 seeded Texas Longhorns. The Eagles making official the news I broke on this blog Saturday. Former Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart will join the Eagles coaching staff. Here's the story on the Eagle's web site. Stewart and Eagles coach Andy Reid have known ea...
What a May. The Texas Rangers May record (20-9) just may have turned their season. They tied with the LA Dodgers for the best May record in MLB. Starting June, the Rangers have the best record in the American League (30-20) and lead the AL West by 4.5 games over the LA Angels. Only one team in MLB has a better record than the Rangers (the Dodgers are an astounding 35-17, despite the Manny being Manny drama). Wha...
What a great weekend of baseball at the NCAA regional tournament in Austin. Here's a list of some of the accomplishments/milestones by the University of Texas baseball team in this weekend's regional play. Saturday - Texas vs Boston College I was amazed one of the faces of the NBA, LeBron James, walked away from the court Saturday night without saying a word or shaking any opponents' hand. The fact that he was hurt by the loss to the Magic is one thing, but if you're going to be one of the stars, if not the main star of the NBA, and have puppets dancing about in your honor on a television commercial, then you owe it to your fans to say something. It's not the k...
