What have we come to in our society? Whatever happened to giving the other team a hard time? Will fans no longer be able to boo someday? These are the questions the come up after the Texas Rangers told a fan she had to turn her "Yankees Suck" t-shirt inside-out or be kicked out of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Really? To say the shirt is profane, which the Rangers say it is, is getting too sensitive, too PC, too ridiculous. I am the first person to say fans, especially with children nearby, shouldn't cuss at the opposing team (or their own team, for that matter), but the Rangers "Code of Conduct" ("Any person wearing clothing with language, graphics, or revealing parts of their body that may be offensive to another guest may be denied entry into the stadium, or ejected from the stadium without refund.") simply sucks. It sucks that she can't wear a shirt that doesn't contain profanity. It sucks that these loyal Rangers fans no longer want to support their team. It sucks that we have gotten so overly-sensitive in our society that a baseball teams feels the need to dictate what fans wear to games. The woman, Kristen Knapp-Webb, sums it up pretty good: "They can't not offend every person who walks in that door. It's not possible." This sucks. 48 CommentsLeave a comment |

Sadly, there is some logic to this choice by Rangers management.
They have, apparently, received complaints in the past about such language, and were thus responding to those complaints.
Unlike with your very witty article, parents are Forced to see the verbage on t-shirts, against their will.
Whereas ... we with discriminating tastes can Choose to read your talented piece!
:-)

Ah, the web page tricked me! They said my first submission didn't go through ... when it did!
Arrrgh!
Paul,
I took out the duplicate for you and your "discriminating taste."
Our comments function sucks, too.
Take care,
Aaron
You know, this type of thing has been going on with the Rangers since last year that I know of. I was at a game with my son and some friends when they were asked to leave because they were trying to get everyone to do the wave. One guy got upset because they were being too loud. You know this is an outdoor venue and you should be loud. The security people were rude in the way they asked them to leave and I will never go to another Rangers game. Oh yeah, my son left three days later to go oversees with the military. What a way to treat our soldiers.
Trying to fix a problem that offends few..and making the masses suffer! Like my son in the first grade that got a note sent home cause he said the "f" word in the bathroom! He said the word "fart"!... the teacher said that many families don't allow their children to hear those kinda words!... Get real they are in first grade!
Chris,
That is so ridiculously funny. What can you do but laugh?
Seriously?? It's a sporting event!! Go to any other sporting event in Dallas and you see the same thing and no one cares. If you are that concerned that your kid might see or hear the word "sucks", then maybe you shouldn't even take them out in public! This is absurd! I am all about making it family friendly with the actual "cussing" and profanity because I am a mother of young children as well. But come on - you see way worse than that just watching regular TV!
And what about the Roughriders games? It can't possibly get more family friendly than that! How come no one is offended that they act out shooting scences with guns at their games?
Maybe this is why the Ballpark in Arlington is rarely a packed house like all the other sporting venues!
When the expression "So and So sucks" first originated years ago, it implied a sexual vulgarism...nowadays, we cleaned it up (sucks eggs, etc.) and kids use it on kids' TV shows...But older people still remember its origins and can find it offensive...I personally don't care, words can't hurt anybody...
I really have a hard time with believing that the Rangers would do this.
I remember that not too long ago, the Rangers in their infinite wisdom thought that the hiring of a racist profanity splurging pitcher (John Rocker), another player who was let go from their former team for.. stealing from other players lockers, these were the best thing for the team!
After hiring such exulted personages to represent / play for the team, for the team to then require that a fan to remove a Yankee's Sucks" shirt is just too much. How can the Ranger's management truely support such a decision? Or is it another case of "Do as I say and Not do as I do"
"Yankees Drink Through Straws"
What if the shirt was worded this way.....
"Yankies Suck?"
Maybe if we asked the question, as opposed to making the statement, would could slip past the iron grip of the "Code of Conduct".
For a team that is trying to get more and more fans in the door, I find it appalling that they would make a fan do this. If you were to see footage of a home RedSox game, you would see 100's of those exact same shirts. (Which is where the idea came from I believe) I think whoever made this decision (coughJOHNBLAKEcough) needs to SUCK it up and make those fans want to come back. The poor little Rangers have suffered through bad pitching, heart breaking trades and the worst decision ever in not putting a roof over a stadium that has the hottest summer days in the league. Throw em some free tickets, give em a few hotdogs or maybe just a couple drinks they can SUCK down.
Can I wear an Obama Sucks T-Shirt?
More than half the fans that attend the Rangers Yankees series are Yankee fans. Who was offended? I think that maybe the Rangers management and security must be Yankee fans too.
Glad the Rangers don't manage the OU/Texas game. 1/2 the fans there have a OU or Texas sucks t-shirt on.
I have an idea... Make a shirt the says 'Yankees' and right below that have the words 'You know the rest'.
This is just another example of the Rangers bowing to the Evil Empire. Whenever the Yankees come to town, it's never about the Rangers, it's always about New York. Increased ticket prices and even the commercials say, "Come out and watch the Yankees."
Until our culture changes and the Yankees are dropped to the same level as any other team that comes to Arlington, this will continue.
Oh yeah, almost forgot...
Studies have actually shown that the Yankees, do indeed, suck (so do the Red Sox).
"Jeter Drinks Wine Coolers"
Geez, can't wear a shit to da ball game because somebody that is not in the home team's city may be offended.... YET, we can watch "professional" (and I use that term loosely) athletes drop F bombs and just about any other 4 letter word or phrase on TV when things do not go their way??
SHIRT.... I meant SHIRT!!! Sorry bout that!!
I think the responsibility falls on the parents. Kids will come in contact with much worse just walking down the street listening to other people's phone conversations. I'm not saying tops should be optional at ball games or that we should be allowed to wear truly foul language (you'll know it when you see it); I am saying be reasonable. If you are comfortable enough to take your kids to a public place and you have hopefully explained to them not to loose your hand in the crowd or take food from strangers, just add one more item to the list.
That is really bizzare. If a Yankee fan went to a game against Boston and had a similar shirt on not only would he be let into the game but he would be revered by his Red Sox hating brethren.
This type of fan fervency is not only needed here in Texas but it will probably be the only way we will ever get this team to win it all. We have to be more like Yankee fans (even though I hate to say it). We need to start bleeding the Rangers colors. We NEED and have a right to BOO our own team when they are not getting it done. We pay our money to be a fan good or bad and that means speaking our minds completely with our voices, our signs, and yes even our apparel.
This is getting out of control. The fact that people get offended because other people get offended is offensive in and of itself.
Have some class, show some good sense. While the phrase "Yankees Suck" isn't directly profane, a t-shirt with that across the front is certainly trashy. Want to give the other team a hard time? Please do, just make sure you are aware that you're in a place where other fans paid the same price as you did. I don't pay to hear you rant and rave the whole game, and I don't want to see it in your choice of clothes either. Support your team, just do so respectfully.
I love the Rangers and have a great time at the games, but I don't need to hear the bozo next to me yelling that Jeter could hit the ball further if his bra wasn't so tight or some other non-sense.
Come on people, make it nice for everyone, not just you.
What happened to old fashioned good sportsmanship?
Sorry Fred, i'll keep the insults to a minimum next time. :)
I remember the beer fights at the old "arlington stadium" when they used to beat the crap out of each other, now all you have to do to get thrown out is wear a profane t-shirt. Give me a break
There's a huge difference between rooting for your team and being obnoxious.
In addition to this incident, I have three friends that were at the Tuesday night Rangers vs. Yankees game when something similar happened. It was bottom of the 8th inning, and they stood up to cheer for the Rangers (it was a full count). Other Rangers fans behind them yelled at them to sit down, and eventually the usher told them if they didn't sit, they would have to leave. Later in the inning, with 2 outs they stood up to cheer again and the same group of Rangers fans threw ice and hit my friend in the back of the head. The usher came back down, and instead of escorting the ice-throwers out of the game, yelled at my friends for standing up again and threatened to have them expelled from the stadium if they continued standing to cheer on the Rangers.
There is more to the story, but I wanted to give you a taste of what happened. It is absolutely ridiculous that Rangers employees and fans act this way. It's a baseball game! You're allowed to cheer on your favorite team! I wish we had real baseball fans here in DFW...
John, I would complain to Rangers management about that. Now for my story. When the Mavs played the Rockets in the playoffs a couple of years ago, I did game 6 in Houston with a friend and he came up here for game 7. He got very upset with the "Houston Sucks" chants (at least that is what he said, we beat the tar out of them). Anyway, my comment was I would take that any day over the folks behind us that constantly spit soda through their straws at me in my Mavs gear.
If the teams stopped me from cheering my team on, I would tell them I would just stop going because that is a big part of the fun.
Belo is repeatedly guilty of being the morality police. The Dallas Observer used to run a regular feature called "Belo watch" that commented on all sorts of things that Belo did to impose its version of morality on the public.
No one can define morality for someone else. Those who try are no different than the Nazis or Taliban.
All in all I think this whole affair sucks!
Besides, if the Yankees suck I guess the Rangers really suck. Go Yanks
just another example of having other people raise our children. if you don't want your child to speak using certain terms, then teach them that at home. when they see it in public, THEY may comment that it isn't polite, and you have the opportunity to agree with them, support your teachings to them AND REMIND THEM THAT WE ARE IN AMERICA WHERE WE ALSO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH!
whether or not i think it is offensive does not dictate the right of people to support their team, as long as it is not profane. as stated before, this may be 'trashy', but not profane.
we've gotten so politcally correct that, again, the few are ruling the many. a handful of people may have complained, but what about the thousands that haven't?
i love the comment stating "Yankees Drink Through Straws"!!! LOL i'll print the shirts...any buyers??? lol
When standing and cheering for my team at an appropriate time i.e. - two outs and two strikes on the opposing team, or third down and 10 yards to go for the opposing team, I like to respond to "Down in front", with "Up in back". Or perhaps the question to the obliviot (oblivious + idiot)"Where are we?" Answer - "The stands". I too was threatened with removal from a game against the Yankees at the Ballpark a few years back when I had the audacity to stand (at the above referenced appropriate time), wave my "Beat the Yankees" hanky and say, "Let's beat these Yankee bastar-s!" You would have thought I had made a terroristic threat. Went through security's interrogation which included verifying I held the tickets to the very nice seats I occupied (certainly such a hoodlum couldn't afford those seats). Ultimately wasn't removed, but security's reaction was entirely over the top and unnecessary. Haven't bought another ticket since.
I would be willing to bet that a Yankees fan wearing a "Rangers Suck" shirt would be cheered, not thrown out of Yankee Stadium.
Rangers management needs to think about fielding a winning team, not what their fans wear to games.
I come from England where we abuse the away fans to the extent whereby fights and riots occur, but mostly it's in the name of banter.
Sporting events here are dead in comparison and with this kind of policing, it's easy to see why.
This is the most pathetic thing i've ever heard of at a sporting fixture. And since when did the word "suck" become offensive even to minors? Honestly, get a grip!
What a pathetic, pathetic turn of events. If the steward had done that at a british sporting event, 10,000 people would pointed and laughed at him... and rightly so.
THey only have a problem with the word because for so many years, all the Rangers ever heard was "RANGERS SUCK".
HOORAH for the Rangers for having the balls to make fans accountable for their behavior whether is verbal or on a shirt.
This is not an issue of being PC it is a clear cut case of a major organiztion stepping up and taking a stand against BAD MANNERS.
I am sick of the media and that includes WFAA not only promoting verbal aggression but promoting it. Which is what this blog is doing in actually taking the side of a sniveling brat who went to the media to complain she couldnt wear her offensive shirt.
Hooray for the Rangers for stepping up and speaking out against the notion that it is ok to go to a game and hold others hostage to rude behavior.
THey only have a problem with the word because for so many years, all the Rangers ever heard was "RANGERS SUCK".
So I guess "Tom Hicks Sucks Dicks" is outta the question?

Well, I'm old enough to know where the phrase "you suck" came from, and in my opinion it's low class and offensive, and yes, profane. I think they did the right thing.
TexasTies, that's where they phrase came from. I don't see why a reference to oral sex would be construed as anything but offensive in a family atmosphere.
I was sitting in the home run porch Tuesday night with my son and five year old grandson. The Ranger fans were heckling Steve Swisher. Some of the comments were very inappropriate. I was concerned about my grandson so I complained to an usher. Nothing was done! I guess the Rangers turn deaf ears when their own fans are offenive.
I'm more offended at a sporting event when some dufus brings in a huge sign that they hold up in front of me and I can't see just so they can get on TV for 1/2 second. People with huge signs suck.
I appreciate the stand the Rangers took on asking the woman to change her shirt. She doesn't have much class to wear a shirt like that. I get on to my children for talking like that (they are 17 & 23).
T Williams................your childrens are a couple of Mary's...........and they suck
It appears to me that the pus-ification of our great nation continues full speed ahead. The verbiage on the shirt is minimally offensive if at all. Get a load of this. Today my 5 year old daughter asks me why it's bad to hold up your middle finger at someone. No lie. Where did she learn this? Preschool. I shared with her that certain hand gestures are nice, thumbs up and the peace sign were a few of the examples I used. I stressed though to her that there was NEVER a time where holding up your middle finger at someone was right and that doing so was a mean thing to do. She got it. Was it a conversation I would like to have with my little girl? No. It was though required engagement with my child. So how to respond to the question from Little Precious, "What does 'Yankees Suck' mean?" If you're a Ranger fan, "It means the Yankees aren't any good." If you're a Yankee fan, "It means that Ranger fan is jealous." :-)
"This is not an issue of being PC it is a clear cut case of a major organiztion stepping up and taking a stand against BAD MANNERS."
Will the Rangers' bouncers kick you out of the stadium if you chew with your mouth open? And you burp? Will they make sure you wash your hands after you urinate? What if I speak when not spoken to?
Is the Rangers organization Super Nanny? Will they raise my children just like you are letting others raise yours??
I'm a reporter in New York and Connecticut and I follow @WFAASports on twitter. I linked to this blog and asked Yanks fans what they thought of the shirt and situation. I put a blog posting together of some of my public responses. I got words from both Yankees and Red Sox fans.
