There's so many things wrong about the final seconds of the Mavericks game Saturday I almost don't know where to begin. So let's begin here: One of the biggest mistakes that came out of that game is the NBA admitting they made one . The league says they made a mistake and missed a foul that should have been called. What about the other 46 they didn't call in Denver? Or the two dozen or so they called Saturday? I I can't begin to understand why the NBA thinks they should admit to this one. If you have a foul to give and you're gonna use it, why didn't anybody tell the refs before the play even started? And was that really the best you can do when you're trying to get a call? Antoine Wright puts his hands up like "hey not me" when all he had to do was grab him, wrap him up and then start all over again. There wasn't anything obvious about Wright's attempt to foul, and I know that because listening to the game on the radio ESPN's Chuck Cooperstein and Brad Davis didn't say a word about a missed call. And Davis always does. All those two said was The Mavericks should have fouled. And if they didn't see it, do we really blame a ref for doing what refs always do in the final seconds? Don't they always say they'll let the players decide it? Isn't this a league that has always had a double standard for players and fouls? Star players don't foul out and the calls at the end of a game, too many times, are determined not by what you did, but by who you are. Denver coach George Karl says he didn't see much of a foul, and who would have guessed. But think about this: if the Mavericks didn't have that foul to give and Antoine Wright had tried to make the steal and was called for that little hand slap he did and Anthony tied the game with free throws, you think Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, or anyone would have been complaining then. And if it hadn't been called and Anthony missed, you think George Karl would have seen it then. This is supposed to be a veteran team that knows how to win close games in the final seconds and no one tells the refs they're going to foul. And no one reminds Antoine Wright how to do it. Blame the ref if you want and some of you will, but if you're up 4 with 31 seconds to go, you're playing at home you should win that game. The Mavericks didn't. And unless they somehow become the first team in 86 tries to lose the first three and come back to win, their season is about over. Then they can start thinking about what went wrong this year and it wasn't a ref not blowing a whistle in the final seconds of Game 3. 29 CommentsLeave a comment |

how was it not a foul? he hit him so hard it knocked the ball out of his ^%$#$%* hands and he had to go get it,it was a foul, and the worst call ive ever seen the refs make, the mavs had every reason to be pissed about this one,and i hope we make history by beating the THUGGETS 4 games in a row,and well see whos running off the court cheering then!! we dont have to tell the refs we are gonna foul dumbo dale, they should know in that situation, they are professional refs, not highschool refs, they should all be fired.
Play to the whistle. That is all they need to know. Foul or no foul, Wright stopped playing when there was not whistle and Anthony still had to make the 3 pointer. I am as disappointed as any Mavs fan, but don't stop if there is no whistle. Plain and simple...
I don't care what anyone says!!! A ref can determine an outcome of a game. It's obvious because they are there to officiate the what, THE GAME, so they are a part of the game!!! Yeah the Mavs should have won that game, but you have to remember if the ref would have called a foul then it would a have been a different outcome. I know George Karl said he didnt see much of a foul, thats a bunch of bologna. If Anthony would have missed that 3 pointer, I guarantee you George Karl would have been crying to the refs saying, "He fouled him why didnt you call it"!!!
Basically everyone is correct:
-The refs made a crappy call...they knew it was a foul
-Mark Cuban is an idiot and invites this kind of thing on himself and the team
-Refs did not lose that game..Not making free throws and shots down the stretch did
Dale thinks they lost because they didn't have Steve Nash or Devin Harris. Ha Ha. Dale, how are those guys doing in the playoffs this year? Oh, and also didn't Devin Harris do an amazing job on shutting down Dwyane Wade and Baron Davis! Your opinions have run dry Dale.
this game was lost in game 1. the refs never call half the fouls that was committed on dallas. whether they don't like cuban or the mavs it was apparent in game 1 and 2 that we were playing against the nuggets and the refs.
This game was lost on the prior defensive and offensive possessions.
1. Antoine Wright should have been guarding Carmelo when he drove past Josh with 5 fouls. That possession cut the lead to 2 points. Josh with 5 fouls didn't even make Carmelo use any time. He just showed him to the rim. At least if Antoine or Green would have made him work for a shot and burn time and potentially get the game clock under 24 seconds.
2. Dirk's shot selection was once again just horrible and he absolutely took the last shot way too early. He left almost 7 seconds on the clock. Fade away's and step backs in the closing minutes of playoff games? Someone needs to remind Dirk he is also a 7 footer on the defensive end. His effort to block Nene's spin, up and under around Bass in the closing minute was ridiculous. Take a foul at least!
3. I totally agree with Dale. Wright threw his arms in the air as if to say "I didn't get him with a foul on the shot". Not to convincing of a reaction from him or from the assistant coaches either. Not one assistant coach could be viewed in the replays calling for a foul. They basically winced when Carmelo got the shot off.
Foul or no foul....the Mavericks lost this game. Come on...at home....in the playoffs...why in the world were they in that situation in the first place!?!?! With Dirk....they are choke artists and always will be. Also, when calling out idiots you must mention Cuban. He is one of the poorest leaders I have ever seen.....BIG BABY!!!
This is a prview to the cowboys season.
From what I saw, the game was lost by Dirk thinking he could make the last 10 or so shots he put up, not including the "hail mary" at the buzzer...
LOL @ Dale trying to discuss Mavericks.
Let me see, he devotes a total of 10 seconds to them during his broadcast so he can hurry up and get to news about his beloved Cowboys mini-camp. Same thing during the Mavs lone Finals appearance in 06. But now he's knowledgeable enough to
write a column on them? Hahahahahahaha.
Give it up Dale. Stick with your Cowboys.
Let them lose one more then we will only have a
few more days of whining about the refs.
Forget the missed call - what about the missed baskets by Dirk in the final minutes of this game? This goes way beyond a ref missing a call. The Mavs did not play adequate defense to maintain their lead in the fourth quarter. Blaming this loss on one missed call is pointless. They also had the rest of the game to beat Denver soundly, and they failed.
Dale-I agree there were a lot of things wrong with the way it ended, however I will take issue with you on this one thing...while Brad and Chuck may not have mentioned it, the announcers on ABC sure did (I have it TIVO'd and would encourage anyone to go back and watch/listen to that again). They BOTH immediately mentioned that Wright was trying to foul. One even went so far to say something to the effect of "there's the foul" when Wright reached in. They shouldnt have been in that situation, but they were and you hope the right call is made and it wasnt.
Boo Hoo....the referees missed a call. Same song every year since the colapse in Miami. Who gets
fired this year to make up for it? Gonna keep
whining until you get a strong floor leader.
It was just a bad call period!!! For those that question why Wright threw his hands up in the air is pretty simple, if he did not do that he would have been called for a continuation foul which would have guaranteed Melo 3 free throws. Can you imagine how upset everyone would have been at him!! Good job Wright not your fault man you did your job just wish we would have got the call!!

Hey!!! How does Rodney get to whine twice?
I'm glad to see a Texas fan taking responsibility for how poorly their team played. Every time I listen to the radio these past three days, all I hear is the ref this the ref that. They didn't lose two games prior due to the refs.
We all know that people make mistakes, but if players are going to be fined and/or suspended for making dumb fouls, referees should also be fined and/or suspended (or at the very least, not be able to collect payment) for officiating a game that was unmistakeably determined by his bad call. The NBA should adopt a replay rule that allows a coach to challenge ANY two calls, like the NFL.
All you people putting this on Dirk for missing shots down the stretch are out of control. He has put this team on his back the entire playoffs this year. Jason terry was a "no show" this year in the playoffs. Yes he is soft on the defensive end, but you cant expect him to change that at this point in his career. it amazes me how people question his shot selection when he misses, but when he makes those same shots, hes great. The refs blew it, but the mavs werent going to win thie series anyways. Hurry up and lose so Cuban can "blow it up"!!
More whining!!! Stop it!!!!
Keep making excuses for this bunch of wimps and
they won't have a reason to win.
Mr. Hansen you got a very good point to be honest with you. It should not have come down to the last shot. I like the comment where if Melo did miss the shot, Carol would be crying for sure. Especially Kenya Mr. Thuggish Ruggish. Oh, Melo will be crying too. Put me on the court, I think I know how to foul. Even put you on the court you would know how to foul. I will even play for free. I think now the player is going to foul harder because they want to get the ref attentions. It so sad on how it finish but let just move on.
Dale...it's a shame you can't support our local basketball team. The bad call, that the NBA admitted, did in fact, make a difference in the outcome of Saturday's game. There are a lot of close games during the season and it's exciting to see how they finish. But, it's disheartening to see one decided by a bad call. I think you'd make a good partner for Charles Barkley on TNT. You are both so full of ....
Oh, who cares. We are talking about a basketball game, not saving lives.
They didn't win the game. Its as simple as that. At least they made it this far.
Hanson is such a nice guy
does this blog only take messages that are complimentary tto wfaa-8 and Hason
Does anyone ever get annoyed at listening to Dale talk about sports? Seems he never has anything positive to say about Cowboys, Stars or Mavericks. Can anyone tell me why he's a sports analyst for DFW when it's so obvious he cannot stand any of the teams? He only supports teams that have a winning record.
Dale, you need to quit jumping on bandwagons and start stating facts about the games and the players. I've never seen so much negativity in ANY sports analyst as what you display on a nightly basis. If you cant stand the teams here, perhaps you ought to get a job in a different metropolitan area where theres constant winning???
The blown call was sure to be infuriating regardless of whether Anthony hit the shot or not. He hit it so the Mavs season is finished with a blown call, Dallas fans are angered. If he misses the shot Dallas gains the win and momentum by a blown call, Denver fans are angered. This call MUST be made.
I agree the Mavericks dug the hole by bad play-calling and missed shots, but the refs pushed them in this hole by swallowing their whistles.
Another inconclusive, questionable season in the books for the NBA...
