Rangers season unofficially begins today

kinsie.jpgSad as it is, the Mavericks season is over. A gutsy effort vs. Denver was not enough and it's time to move on.

And acknowledge that there's a team near Six Flags Over Texas that plays a game on a diamond, with dirt, and a lot of lumber.

The Rangers have been almost completely ignored by the locals since their season began six weeks ago, largely due to the increasing focus on the Mavs' playoff push. But that's also because of fan suspicion about the longtime loveable losers; it will take a lot for Texas to win over the Metroplex.

Well, a record of 19-14 and a first place berth might not be enough reason for fans to start camping out for World Series tickets, but surely they should bring about an attendance of more than 16,000, right? That was approximately the fan count two nights ago. Last night, whether due to a promotion or the Rangers' strong play, that number jumped up to 25,865. Very promising.

For that number to keep increasing, the Rangers pitching staff must prove they're not a mirage. The club must show a committment to keeping this team intact in Arlington and not trade off their pieces like the cheap garage sales of the past.

Rangers season is here. At least, until the Cowboys fire up Training Camp in July.

"Until the Cowboys fire up camp in July." You got it right. If Romo sneezes, the Rangers will be pushed to the third topic (behind whatever major golf or Nascar event happens to be in play) on every local sportscast, even if they win 95 games. The Rangers are the #4 sports attraction in this town behind the Cowboys, Mavericks, and Stars. Only 81 home games prevent their attendance from being lower than all three main attractions. Alas, they have no one to blame but themselves. Winning solves everything. And it is clear that current ownership/management has not been serious about winning here based on the horrendous pitching and personnel decisions that have been made. Who knows? Maybe this year will be different? I will keep attending games just in case. Nowhere else can I spend $5 and sit behind home plate in an almost empty ballpark.
