Karl: Mavs fans had 'racist mentality'

Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl was not happy with the way his team was treated by the fans in Dallas during Games 3 and 4 of their playoff series.

Karl told Dan Patrick on his radio show that Mavs fans went beyond just creating a hostile sporting environment, to using racial language.

"I felt it crossed the line," Karl said. "There was a racist mentality to it. There was a fighting mentality to it. It was to the point where blows I think could have happened. There wasn't enough security. There wasn't enough comfort for the fan who didn't want any part of it."

Karl said he heard some of the language directed at his players, including the "N-word."

"It was abusive," he said. "It wasn't very classy."

That's an understatement.

Regardless of the intensity of the series or game there is simply no excuse for racist language. Mavs fans, if they said this or encouraged it or cheered, should be ashamed.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban denied the accusations to The Dallas Morning News.

"The mis-characterization of Mavs fans and the suggestion that there was a continuous racial or other type of onslaught by Mavs fans in the area towards the Nuggets bench and their fans is absolutely incorrect," according to Cuban.

"I have yet to see any video tape or evidence of any type showing Mavs fan acting in an abusive manner," Cuban wrote. "I have no problem revoking season tickets of people who crossed the line."

Karl said he didn't want to address the issue with Cuban, because he didn't want to give him more attention after a week in which there was a public dispute between Cuban and Nuggets player Kenyon Martin and Martin's mother.

After Game 3, Cuban says fans were calling Nuggets players thugs and Cuban turned to Martin's mother and said "that includes your son."

Cuban later apologized on his blog.

Karl said after the playoffs the Nuggets will bring the issue with the Mavs fans to the league.

My colleague David Marcus says Karl is way out of line.

Not only that...but what about the season ticket holders who sit in that area and called into the talk radio shows? Every one of them said, that's simply not true. That didn't happen.

What about the media that was in that area? NONE OF THEM have come out and said they heard racist language being used.

I applaud the intensity of the fans. It was very "Philly" like...which is something we don't see to often in this area.

Why is the media sensationalizing this story? Even members of the media in that area said, while the atmosphere was intense, they didn't see or hear anything like what the Nuggets and their families are claiming happened.

I was in attendance on Monday night for the game against the Nuggets. I heard no racial slurs whatsoever. The only thing I heard was typical game banter, nothing personal. I had my nine yr old with me and would have not appreciated the use of any racial slurs in her or my prescence. I think it's ridiculous that he is accusing Mav's fans of being racist, if anything the few Nuggets fans in the audience were the most rude to the Mavs fans that surrounded them...

I don't doubt it for a second, Texans are about 30 years behind everyone else in race relations from my experience. Some of you guys still think they should ride in the back of the bus.

Jeff said:

Is it possible they were saying "Nuggets suck!" or "f-ing Nuggets" and in the noise it sounded like the n-word?

BigRed said:

CBFjeff: Are you serious? You are an absolute idiot! Every single state has people that can set a bad stereotype. But for you to say all Texans are 30 years behind everyone else is truly absurd. I think it's individuals like yourself that keep racism alive. Think of how your make yourself sound like a complete idiot before making such a ridiculous statement.

There you go... bury your head in the sand.

Just because YOU didn't engage in this stuff doesn't mean hundreds of others in the arena didn't.

Rex Chapman...a longtime NBA player and Nuggets executive who garners a lot of respect around the league... said it was the most dangerous atmosphere he'd been in over his long career.

Mark Cuban's reaction at the end of game 3 had incited anyone who is a bit overzealous to crawl out from under their rock in game 4. And it's been reported over and over that the situation was so tense and chippy that the Nuggets players were asking about the safety of their families in the stands during every time out.

I don't live in Denver. I don't live in Dallas. I am an NBA fan. The league should not allow Mark Cuban to be running onto the floor and pointing and jawing with fans during and after games. It is his actions and reactions that got many in the crowd riled up.

Not the majority of the crowd, but enough of the fans were vocal enough to warrant comments like those of George Karl.

It revolves around the "thug" accusations that Cuban participated in. Funny thing is, he points that "thug" accusation at any team that bounces them out of the playoffs. Whether you want to realize it or not, your team owner has gone a long way toward putting a stain on the reputation of your city and fans.

If I am correct there is only one light colored person on the Mavs. If the fans were racist there probably wouldn't be anyone in the stands at all!

Wow!!! Mavs fans are racist??? George Karl obviously hasn't spent much time in Denver. I've attended games in Denver where racial slurs have been hurled at certain players such as Warren Moon, Kordell Stewart, and Jack Tatum (yes i'm showing my age) at Broncos games, and at Avs games Grant Fuhr, Jerome Iginla, Mike Grier have had their share of slurs hurled at them too. Oh yeah Dikembe Mutumbo had a bad game one time when he was playing for the Nuggets and a fan yelled for him to go back to Africa. How nice??? It's about time our fans had a killer instinct at home games, we need more of it especially at Cowboys games where we have been outnumbered at times by Steelers fans (thanks Mark Cuban) and Packers fans. As for George Karl get a clue before spouting off you idiot!!!

Ummok said:

Ok, if Mavs fans are racists then what do you call Kenyon Martin calling Cuban a "f-a_@@-o_t"? Is that an acceptable term in the NBA where as THUG is racist?

WhirledNews said:

First of all, the Nuggets players are thugs. Secondly, does anyone have any proof that the Mavs fans were being racist or are they just relying on the opposing team’s coaches and executives, because that would seem a bit biased to me...

Brian McDonald said:

If they would do away with all sports none of this would happen

methinks said:

The nuggets coach is a just a cry baby... "It wasn't very classy." Waaah... Maybe the NBA should all hold hands and play nicey nice and instead of keeping score we can have both teams leave as "winners" (no score) - the way elementary schools do.

It would have been nice to see the Mavs in the finals, but Cleveland, with Lebron are just way too good. Cleveland will continue to sweep all comers - bets are riding on it.

wilback said:

Doesn't matter. Don't give him the attention
he is looking for.

Ridiculous!

Would'nt it be ridiculous if fans used the N word for the nuggets in Dallas and then wonder if their own Dallas players would not be ticked off to hear that slander. come on give me a break.

George Karl is nuts!

Mike said:

I just lost ANY sense of respect i had for george karl. how dare he call our fans racist fools. how in the hell would that have even been accepted? The majority of the MAVS squad is black, and believe me, fans would have put a stop to any idiot that was hurling out racial slurs. You're an idiot george karl, and you obviously don't think for a second before opening your mouth.

Cbfjeff said:

Big red, Ok I should have said some Texans you are correct there. Still, when I moved here from Chicago it was like I walked into 1975. So actually it's 34 years.

cbfjeff... is everyone from Chicago stupid? cause when you got here it was like walking into 1975 all over again.

singmeagoodngr worksong said:

Wasn't there a negro female MTV host there acting unlady like when she has a charm show? like the other post mentioned, the fans were yelling F#%^ing Nuggets. theres negros on both teams.

Erick said:

cbjeff,

Go back to Chicago. It's such a nice town anyways. If you hate it here so much, then leave.

Everyone knows Chicago is a dump.

Basketball fans, in any city, are far from racist.... blacks are the overwhleming majority in NBA.
Chances are if someone was racist towards blacks, the last place they would want to be would be an NBA game.

George Karl is just pulling this cr*p out of his a**.

Dallas, and Texas, in general is a very racist place. I agree with cbjeff. When I moved to Dallas 8 years ago it was a complete shock to find racism so rampant in the world today. The things I heard in the first six months would not be thought of in normal places. As far as the Nuggets being thugs, they are not as nice and polite as the Mavs, but you could put a squad of nuns on the court and they would look like thugs compared to the weak girly-boy Mavs. Every team in the league knows if you get a bit physical with the Mavs they will fold up like a cheap suitcase... which was proven by the Nuggets. And lastly...For anyone from Dallas to call Chicago, or any other city, a dump just shows you the lack of intelligence of Dallas natives. The thing Texans don't get (and never will), is this piss-hole they are so proud of is nothing but a joke to the rest of the US. A city of $50,000 "millionaires" is nothing to be proud of.

who cares spo811, if you do not like it here leave...(since it is such a piss-hole)i have traveled and lived in other cities and i hate to tell you dallas is a pretty clean city...there are definately SHADY AREAS believe me plenty. Compared to all the places i have gone or lived dallas is definately unique. If for instance,if you watch a basket ball game (mavs) at home verses any where else in the usa look at the fans in dallas ,they are put together, groomed and CLEAN.I can totally tell the difference of how other fans in other cities carry themselves ewww not like dallas. That also goes for hockey games! Oh p.s. I am not a native dallasite or native texan...I travel and have lived various places with diverse backrounds. Heehee try new orleans now that will leave a southern taste in your mouth..I am proud to live in dallas and to say that I am a Texan. It is its own country you know..there is a lot of money and middle class with taste in clothing and yes and GROOMING
