Mickelson right to put family first

0520_mick200.jpgThere are a lot of things that are more import in life than sports. Your family is one.

Phil Mickelson was supposed to be in North Texas to play in the Byron Nelson this week and defend his title at the Colonial next week.

Then news that changed everything.

Mickelson's wife, Amy, has breast cancer.

She will have surgery within the next two weeks. It's a diagnosis that about 180,000 American women will get this year. About 40,000 women die from the disease each year.

The Mickelsons have been married since 1996 and have three children.

Mickelson is suspending his PGA Tour schedule indefinitely. It's the right decision.

It was sad news was for golfer Anthony Kim, who is friends with the Mickelsons, and is at the Nelson.

"It's a terrible thing I wish the best for them," Kim said. "I know this just a golf game and we have take it as that."

Sure we would have loved to see Lefty play here, but this is more important. His job as a golfer is secondary to his role as husband and father.
