Jones: Ellis likely done with Cowboys

0526_gregellis200.jpgAfter 11 seasons Greg Ellis is likely done in Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said today it is very likely "Greg will be playing someplace else this year."

Ellis was a first-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 1998 from North Carolina.

He played defensive end before moving to outside linebacker when then team moved to a 3-4 defense.

Jones says he has enormous respect for Ellis.

"Greg's got a lot of football left in him," Jones said. "He's a real gentleman."

Jones cited linebacker DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer and this year's draft picks as reasons to move Ellis, who he'd like to trade.

Ellis stopped attending the teams OTAs last week and will not return.

By cutting or tradding Ellis the Cowboys can save about $4.5 million on the salary cap.

He had eight sacks last season and 12.5 the year before. The 20.5 two-season total are the best back-to-back seasons of his career. Ellis has 77 career sacks.

After Tuesday's OTA session Cowboys coach Wade Phillips heaped a whole punch of praise on Spencer, calling him "a real talented player."

Joe Trahan and I talk about the decision to move Ellis in video form here.

Jerry Jones is a fool and you can't fix that.

Greg Ellis has little value because of his age. He has been great but disgruntled the last 3 years it's time to part ways. Jerry needs to try to get something for him. Maybe he can get on with Buffalo.

I like the move personally. He is on the downside of his career. They need the room in the cap to sign the best pass rusher in football. The things they have done in the off season, other than the Dan Reeves debacle, have been what the Cowboys need to be doing. The only thing left is to move Wade to Defensive Cordinator and get a head coach.

Jones doing the right thing I have to say. Why keep a player if he does not want to play for you nor the team. If I was the owner and the player ask to be trade. I would in a heart beat. You think about it did Ellis give his 110% like he use to last season. NOPE! Like Jones say he have up most respect for the guy.

Nothing but great respect for Greg Ellis and what he has meant to the cowboys. played his heart out, changed positions late in his career to help the team win and i have no doubt he has helped our younger players develop into really good players. great work ethic. and he did the Star PROUD!!!. Thanks Greg for all your years of dedication to the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Area. you will be missed , best of luck to you. i hope you get picked up by a good team and have success. just dont go to an NFC East team :o) .

Isn't he the NFLPA team rep? I know that a lot of the younger players looked to him for career advice. He battled through a couple of tough injuries to play well, but I think that it was time for him to move on. The only reason that Jerry is saying that he has a lot of football left, is because he wants to keep his trade value high. We need a motor on the other side of Ware. Maybe this will open things up to someone with strength and speed. Best of luck Mr. Ellis and thanks for being a good character guy.

Greg Ellis is my personal favorite cowboy. I will miss him. I understand the business side, and he hasn't been happy in a long time. I bet he ends up making Bill Parcells look more like a genius, and terrorizing the AFC East. Good Luck Greg!!
