The 22-year-old has shown tremendous poise so far in his first seven appearances with the Rangers. He had only one poor outing, giving up five runs in a 10-8 win over the Angels last week. Even though it took an injury to Vicente Padilla for Holland to get his chance, don't be under the illusion that Texas is all that enamored with its starting pitching. Granted, Kevin Millwood has been terrific. Matt Harrison has surprised but is showing signs of coming back down to earth. Brandon McCarthy is, well...Brandon McCarthy. Padilla has been outstanding at times but still as inconsistent as ever. That's why Texas is looking to Holland to be a rotation mainstay. This isn't a short-term deal here. If Derek pitches well, he's in the starting five to stay. The Rangers feel he's been stretched out enough to throw upwards of 70-80 pitches in his debut tonight. He will get an even looser leash as he continues to pile up starts. Though he's appeared in seven games, the sampling of Holland has been small. What to expect in his big starting debut? Holland's fastball will help him get strikeouts but he has command of an effective changeup as well. As for the future, if he can master a third pitch, he will take that next step to being the type of elite young hurler the Rangers so badly crave. 2 CommentsLeave a comment |

This kid Derek is a frikin bad a$s. I hope the Rangers keep this pitching machine around for a long time. No offence to the other pitchers on the team, but, Derek is the best pitcher on the Rangers roster. Bar none! GO Holland!!!
