Cubs pitcher goes berserk

UPDATE: Zambrano suspended for 6 games for tirade

Plenty of topics to discuss this morning around the sports water cooler but surely none will dare to compare to that of Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano during Wednesday nights 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Surely this display of fine acting should earn Zambrano a nomination for "Best Supporting Actor" in a Major League Baseball role at the next Academy Awards.

With the Cubs up by a score of 2-1 in the seventh Zambrano throws a wild pitch that got pass catcher Geovany Soto. Now here comes Pittsburgh's Nyjer Morgan breaking for home plate and Zambrano is now covering the plate in hopes of making the tag for the out. Morgan was called safe by umpire Mark Carlson after sneaking his left hand in for the tying run. Zambrano disagreed with the call and soon went berserk.

After reportedly a combination of screaming and shouting mixed in with some demonstrative hand gestures as well as a little bumping of Carlson, Zambrano was ejected from the game.

Now the action kicks into overdrive by Zambrano as he finds himself in the face of Carlson, ball in hand, pointing a finger at the umpire and is thought to be mocking Carlson with his very own rendition of "You're outta here". Zambrano then tosses the ball towards the left field seats, throws his glove and decides to pick up a bat and have a bit of batting practice with the Gatorade machine.

Following the game Zambrano decided to apologize for his actions, admitting he overreacted.

Just one person's opinion, but this is exactly where and how the seeds are planted with the young athletes of tomorrow. Here is yet another example of a well paid professional athlete who feels that by opening his checkbook and filling in the necessary digits and uttering a few words of apology makes it ok to behave like an idiot.

If there was ever any discussion as to what we should do with the closing of that detention center at Gautama Bay, we now have our answer.
