Cuban's actions are senseless, cowardly

cubes2.jpgMark Cuban has long been a lightning rod for controversy since he took over as owner of the Mavericks nine years ago. Many Mavs fans and local media have probably gotten a kick out of his antics involving David Stern, league officials, and opposing players.

But thanks to his dreadful and shameful actions this week at the American Airlines Center, Cuban has reached a new low here.

Criticizing league officials for blown calls is one thing. Blasting an opposing player to his mother, in person, is quite another. What's worse...Cuban has brought about an atmosphere of hostility at the arena this week, through his actions. MFFL's (Maverick Fans For Life) worship Cuban and his antics. Some even follow his lead. Case in point, the miserable display of beer throwing and cursing directed at the family of Nugget Kenyon Martin, no saint himself. Cuban surely helped fire up the fans after his game three tirade.

And we haven't even mentioned the cheap shove of a local television photojournalist.

In dispensing his half-hearted and somewhat sarcastic "apology" on his blog, Cuban resisted the urge to confront K-Mart himself. The manly thing to do would be to meet with Martin after a shootaround or practice and offer the apology in person. Also, note how Cuban's apology was posted only after the Mavericks won Game four.

Who here thinks the apology would have come had Dallas lost?

Cuban, like Jerry Jones, is an owner committed to winning and to shelling out whatever money is necessary to achieve that. But, also like Jerry, he allows his personal affections for the team and his loyalty to get in the way. Like Jerry's worst tendencies, Cuban makes the illogical transition from "owner" to "fan." That's not good when you can't control your temper and set a miserable example for the real fans, the ones who sit in your seats and pay to enter the building.

Tonight on SportsTalk at 6:30 PM on KFWD 52, I will read an email from a viewer who wrote in to defend Cuban's actions. I suppose there's always the occasional fool who thinks it's ok to defend the reprehensible, solely because the actions come from within.

The Nuggets are surely not pure either in this, and Kenyon Martin got into an ugly display with Mavs fans on his way out of the arena on Monday night.

But as owner of a professional team, your job is to set an example...not become the punching line of a lame joke.

Mark Cuban is dangerously close to being a league wide joke, if he hasn't already.

Cuban is a thug. Not the oposition. He is
as gutless as the people working for him.
Not a strong leader among them. How many more
assaults can we inflict on the opposing teams
family. Wouldn't it be better to win on the
court? A few years ago, I would bleed Dallas
Mavericks. I no longer stick up for them when
my family from out of state rips them and Cuban.
Particulary Cuban. Cuban stay away from the
camera. Same advice I gave Jerry Jones.
You aren't helping the franchise with your
silly behavior.

There is nothing more annoying than a thin skinned reporter with a superiority complex. A cheap shove? You make yourself sound ridiculous.
It was barely a bump. When did everyone that works in the press become paparazzi minded zombies addicted to hyperbole?

Cuban was clearly wrong with how he handled himself after game three and he apologized... This post makes you sound like you are looking for a reason to pile on him because he hurt your cameraman's feelings.

Those beer slinging idiots made their decision by their own accord. I'm sure alcohol had a million times more to do with their antics than Cuban. Just the same, Cuban offered a forthright apology to the the family. You didn't like it. So what?

The regrettable incident with Martin's family happened midgame and his apology came after the game. Was he supposed to tweet the Nuggets, God and everyone who witnessed it and beg forgiveness 140 characters at a time midgame?

Sorry, friend. No sale.

Cuban is a fool, but the hostility in the AAC had nothing to do with him. When JET got an elbow to the throat for a no call and then a foul and tech on the same play for a Mav is what set the building off. I am still hoarse from joining in "Ref, you s**k" Mavs play soft and they get beat and called for soft fould. Mavs play hard like Denver and it is flagrent fouls and technicals.

Cuban pushed the cameraman on the elbow. You get more contact shopping at Walmart. Your cameraman is soft. You should go film the pet of the week segments if you can't handle it.

So...what you're saying David, is that if we don't have the same opinion about Marks actions as you do, then we're fool's?

Whatever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me?"

Cuban did nothing wrong. He shouted some stuff at a players mom. Who cares. Players and fans and their family members have been doing that since the NBA came into existence.

Until Cuban or any other person crosses the line of physical contact, then who cares? Let them yell and scream and call each other names all they want.

I for one am glad that Cuban did that. I love Cuban and the passion he has for the Mavericks.

So he told Kmart's mom her son is thug...I'm sure she knew that. Oh and guess what, he is a thug.

Will the media please stop criticizing cuban? yes he can open his mouth up a little too much sometimes, but he has done SO much for this team and this city, and he already apologized. i fully stand by him.

and David, get over the hostility of the crowd. it was one of the best crowds the AAC has ever seen, and we gave denver what they deserved. this was do or die, and it sure as he** felt like it. apparently some people in dallas would rather the crowd go back to a mix of boring corporate executives that don't care about the game and MFFLs. everyone cared last night, and the passion was everywhere. denver was INTIMIDATED by our fans, and any team that comes to the AAC should be!

GO MAVS! we as fans got your back any time, and we'll always be there to defend you on our home court! give denver he**

You are right. It wasn't a pretty people being seen crowd. It was real fans with real passion taking out their frustrations of game 3 on Denver and doing their best to help the Mavs avoid a sweep. I am glad Denver didn't like how the crowd acted. You shouldn't if you are a visiting team.

GO MAVS and give us another home game so sissy boys like David can see some more passion. If you were good at your job you would be on one of the big local stations.

Mike, I am all for loud, screaming fans. A boisterous, supportive crowd is fantastic. But some fans went way over the line last night, hurling expletives at an opposing player's family. The family probably wasn't blameless in this either, but they're still guests in your building. What happened last night was shameful and ugly. Come on people...we're not in Philadelphia.

Mark Cuban made a terrible mistake, in taking his frustration out on Martin's mom. Because he is so much of a fan...he felt cheated, right or wrong.
I have a lot of respect for Cuban, because he bought the Mavs when you could not give away tickets to see them. He has poured money into the team, the facilities, and the coaching staff. It has been widely reported they all have the best of everything. I can understand his frustration.
But I do think that Cuban must learn to control himself especially with fans and other players. He must remember that he is the owner of a high profile NBA team and must conduct himself in public the same as he would expect his employees to conduct themselves. In other he should do nothing to embarrass his team, the fans or the city. So Mark please show that you are sorry you behaved the way you did. Make amends to Martins mom. So the team, the fans and the city can move on from this.

Kmart is a thug, he was acting like a thug at the end of game three instead of accepting the win the refs handed him graciously, he acted like the thug he is. If his mom had raised him right in the first place, and by right I mean with manners and integrity other than just honing basketball skills, then this conversation wouldn't even be happening. It's Cuban's house, who cares what he says. I also tend to think that alcohol had more of a role in the audience behavior than Cuban telling it like it is. Let this be a lesson to athletes, if you wanna thug it out in our house, don't bring your mommy with you.

You Dallas fans just watch and see what happens at pepsi center tonight just look at the NO series. Anyone remember a beer bottle being thrown at the NO bench hmmm... i wonder what they could do after the treatment the players, families and fans received. GOOD LUCK your going to need it.

I am a hard core mavs fan and not so much a Cuban fan because of him the NBA looks at the Mavs like they are the step child of the NBA.We get no respect from TNT,ESPN and the NBA.
As far as KMart goes he is no more of a thug than Bruce Bowen is from SA.What KMart does on the court does not reflect what he does off the court. It is like he has two seperate lives one clean and one dirty.

I fear for the team tonight in Denver their safety is going to be at risk once they step onto the court and the game begins they will take their fustrations they have for Mark Cuban out on the Mavs and I hope that there is someone from the league office (Stern) and someone from the officating office in the stands to wittness what I feel will be a payback like we have never seen before. And if that happens I will put the blame on Cuban.

well I think if that happens the Nuggets are the scum of the NBA.There was no throwing of anything at the Denver bench while they was in Dallas so why would you suggest that will happen tonight unless you are going to be the one that does it and then you would be in the same class as Mark Cuban. You would be lower than Cuban is actually

I bet there is a record set for tech, fouls tonight in Denver and I am also thinking that the Denver fans may be more of a distraction for the Nuggets than the Mavs. The Mavs will have alot of security around them and their bench you can count on that,Cuban will hire extra security to travel with the team and stay with them while they are in Denver. He is known to do that if he feels that there may be a problem.I think the Mavs will win tonight cause of alot of ejections from the Denver team.

This is a prime example of a classless idiot. People of yours and cuban's ilk are an embarrassment. The inability to know right from wrong and the blissful wallowing in that slop of ignorance is disgusting. Of course Cuban has somewhere to be for game 5 in Denver, guess the little worm didn't want to participate in the joyful throwing of beer ON HIM. What a weasel.
