The Dallas Cowboys have not done a good job this offseason addressing what, to me, is an important need: Backup nose tackle. They added one today, but it's not much of an addition. Jay Ratliff went to the Pro Bowl last season, but he's undersized for a nose tackle, who usually gets double-teamed by the center and a guard. At 6' 4" and 298 pounds he's small, really only by the standard of playing nose tackle in the NFL. So enter Jonas Seawright (not one of the Jonas Brothers). He's big, 6' 6" and 335 pounds, but is 27 and has only played nine games in the NFL. Seawright was last active in 2006 with the New York Giants, where he had just one tackle in those nine games. He was released by the Giants on September 2, 2007 and has remained out of football. He originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2005 out of North Carolina. He spent his entire rookie season on the club's practice squad. The other potential backup defensive tackles on the Cowboys roster are similar. Tim Anderson, also signed this offseason, didn't play last season and had eight tackles for two teams in 2007. Junior Siavii hasn't seen NFL action since 2005. Casey Tyler, who the Cowboys signed as a free agent from New England, was a rookie free agent last year, who also did not see the field in 2008. I'm not saying the Cowboys need a star to backup Ratliff, but someone who has played the game in the past couple of season would be nice. The Cowboys better hope Ratliff, a real difference maker, stays healthy. |
