Cowboys new special teams coach brings energy

Joe DeCamillis is a high energy guy. The Dallas Cowboys new special teams coach is a departure from the guy he replaced, Bruce Read.

The Cowboys special teams units have struggled the past few years so the Cowboys fired Read and hired DeCamillis, the son-in-law of former NFL head coach Dan Reeves.

Of course Reeves is a former Cowboys player and assistant coach who nearly came to the Cowboys this off-season in an advisory role.

DeCamillis was quite enthusiastic in his chat with the media after the first workout of the Cowboys rookie mini-camp.

"We've got some talented kids," DeCamillis said.

A big part of the Cowboys off-season has been spent addressing special teams. It was a priority in last weekend's draft.

None of the draft picks are expected to start for the team, but to make the team they will have to be contributors on special teams.

"I think all of those guy are capable of being players in the NFL besides special teams," DeCamillis said.

He said the key for his units will be precise execution.

"We've got one down to get it right," he said.

He also talked about two of the team's draft picks.

He said kicker David Buehler, a fifth-round pick, has "very rare" skills and may be used to cover kicks, as well.

"We're going to try to find some place for him to try to contribute in other ways," DeCamillis said.

And on TCU's Stephen Hodge, a sixth-round pick: "He's got a great motor."
