Could Nolan Ryan buy the Rangers?

Tom Hicks may not have to look far to sell majority ownership in the Texas Rangers.

The man he hired as team president last year, Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, could end up running the team on his own.

Now without intimate knowledge of his finances, I don't think Ryan has the money readily available to purchase more than 50 percent of the team (last year, Forbes estimated the team's value at $412 million).

Ryan was, though, a person Hicks said he wanted to get involved in ownership when he announced he was seeking people to buy a minority stake in the team.

"That's part of this process," Hicks said in March. "I want to find a way to get Nolan more involved."

Ryan isn't talking about buying the team now. Certainly he is a baseball guy and he has deep roots with the Rangers as a pitcher on the team from 1989-1993. He also set several milestones while with the Rangers including his 5,000th strikeout and sixth and seventh no hitters before retiring. He gets bonus points for the headlock and pounding of Robin Ventura.

More likely than Ryan actually buying a majority of the team is him leading an ownership group, like the group the bought the team from Eddie Chiles for $98 million in 1989.

The man that led that Rangers ownership group, was some guy named George W. Bush. I hear he's back in town, too.

What about George W as a possible buyer of the team? He could certainly raise the capital required and he's without a job right now.

What about allowing George W and Nolan Ryan to form a partnership and run the team together? Despite your political views, when he ran the Rangers, they were a good ball club. And now that Nolan is on board, the sky's the limit. Not only could they raise the capital, they could expand on the excitement that is already building with this year's team. Personally, I think it would be awesome to have 2 Texas boys running the club.

I think that is a good idea. Not sure if Bush is interested, but it would certainly make sense.

Bush has said he's not interested.

But two names I've heard thrown around intrigue me. Roger Staubach and David McDavid. I'd be happy with either of those.

hookem,

Thats an interesting point. Staubach has really done well in the business world and is an icon in the state.

McDavid also made out pretty well in his short stint as owner of the Mavericks. I think he went in with Perot for the Mavs and doubled his money in a short time which means he obviously ran it well. At one time McDavid was trying to buy some pro teams in Atlanta as well but it didn't work out so I guess he likes the sports owner role.
