UPDATE: The man who was in the ring with Benjamin Flores when he died is trying to make sense of it all.
Flores was challenging Seeger for the vacant NABF super bantamweight title when the referee stopped the bout because Flores wasn't punching back anymore. Accounts of those on hand said said the referee had to physically hold Flores up until they could get a stool for him to sit on. Flores soon lost consciousness and was rushed to Parkland Hospital where he died early Tuesday morning. Flores fought 23 pro fights winning 16, six by KO's, and losing four. 33 CommentsLeave a comment |

I am sorry for Flores and his family. My condolences. Boxing should be banned. There is no sane reason people should punch each other in the head for sport.
I agree 100%, sadness for the family and STOP the violent sport. Why people get enjoyment from seeing other people hurt themselves is beyond my comprehension. Sad representation of what thrills the human race
I second that. It should be outlawed. And I think Muhammad Ali would agree as well.
My deepest condolences to the family of this unfortunate young man but no one held a gun to his head and forced him to participate in such a violent sport.
As an American, I would have hoped that we had advanced socially to the point where this sport should be banned.
As a human being, I am discusted that this event even took place.
Boxers are not dogs or cocks. They are humans making decisions for themselves. It will never be banned as long as it continues to make people wealthy.
While this is sad, and my condolences go out to the family, boxing should not be banned.
I'm pretty sure Muhammad Ali would not agree with you David. He loved and still loves boxing. Why would he support his own daughter in boxing if he thought it should outlawed?
Boxing is far worse than mixed martial arts(MMA)UFC etc... the combat sport is slowly transitioning into a far more entertaining safer version of combat sport via mma, my prayers go out to the family friends, and trainers of this young man,,,, p.s. there has never been a fatality during an mma event or serious injury
The word is "disgusted", not discusted, stay in school kids and you won't have to be a boxer.
Not being able to spell is more discusting than watchng two guys punch each other.
rip Benjamin
You knucklehead, how do you think boxing got started? They didn't always wear gloves, they began wearing gloves because it was safer (fewer people died). How long has boxing been around? How long has MMA been around? Stop being a dope, of course there have been fewer fatalities, the sport is in its infancy compared to boxing!
I'm not a MMA/UFC fan at ALL, but I have seen a few matches and witnessed compound fractures, severe dislocations and yes I have read of at least one death. It is barbaric compared to boxing, this isn't a sport, it's a street fight people pay to see. I wish people would post with some common sense, or background knowledge.
"p.s. there has never been a fatality during an mma event or serious injury" check your facts there was a recent death in mma match.
Hey RON, learn a little about the sport before you start ranting about it, MMA has never had a fatality due to injuries sustained in a fight, check up on it, boxing is far more dangerous than mma, 1 boxing has longer rds, the longer the rd the more hits a boxer takes to the head, 2 the 16 ounces of additional weight the gloves have have a harder impact to the head creating a more dangerous anterior contusion.. mma has 3- 5 minute rds for non-title fights and 5-5 minute rds for title fights,, mma has been around since 1991 created by the gracies, for your information John Mccain used to be the biggest critic of mma and even now he has no problem with it
Okay... all you people that are for banning the sport of boxing... let me back up for a moment and first say that it is sad that Flores died and my thoughts and prayers to his family. I guess to all you who say ban boxing need to think. It is a sport.. I suppose we need to ban NASCAR and the NHRA racing because the driver and sometimes spectators get hurt or killed. Well ban football too because players get hurt and killed.. then hockey.. OH skydiving!!!
There are risks in all sports.. boxing and mma are sports and people train hard for them and have a love for it. You don't have to like it or support it. However, the freedom to do it is "American Freedom". That my family, my son has fought for.
So, don't support it or anything that is a risk and lock yourselves away!
Ron,,,,,,,,your the knucklehead,, you obviously know nothing about mma, if you did or even watched an mma event you would understand the depth of the technique used in the fights.. mma is a legit sport and far more intriguing than a street fight
ronmexico needs to go back to mexico because he can't spell either. Hello.. if you are going to correct someone for spelling then learn how to speak english.
if your referring to sam vasquez from houston, it was an amateur fight and later to be found that it was a blood clot in his brain not from the fight itself... he had a massive stroke due to the clot and was placed in a medically induced coma
Thank goodness we live in a country that gives us the right to choose what we do with our lives. Living is a dangerous sport. Benjamin was pursuing his dream and died with dignity. We should all be so lucky. My thoughts and prayers go with the family and the boxing community.
Vasquez's death was caused by his fight. The official cause was Vasquez's death was death due to complications of blunt trauma of the head with a subdural hemorrhage.
Also, his fight was not an amateur bout. It was Vasquez's third professional fight.
There have been two other deaths, as well. Doug Dedge in 1998, and a fighter named Lee in 2005. Both of those fights were not sanctioned and did not take place on American soil.

Julie....
Just because we have the right doesn't necessarily make it right! This young life was taken way too early and really, who are you to say it was his dream what if it was solely for the money! No matter what slant people want to put on this, this is violent and we (people watching) should not get excitement over one person hurting another.
You say he died with dignity - tell that to his family.
My condolences go to both the Flores family and Mr. Seeger. How traumatic it must be for Mr. Seeger to think he was the cause of someone's death however unintended.
This incident seems right out of the movie Pulp Fiction
Condolences to the family. These people that participate in boxing are adults, we don't force them to fight. They fight because they want to. If you don't like the sport don't watch it or participate in it. Quit telling people what to do just because you don't agree with something. No one is forcing you to sit and watch boxing.
Having seen first-hand how violent boxing can be, this is sad news. I promoted the "Rumble on the Tollway" back in 2003 at Beltline and the Tollway. All the major heavyweight boxers competed there under that huge tent and tickets were $200-$1,500 each to watch the bouts/matches. Lots of blood. Lou Savarese vs. Johnson was the title fight. It was a bloody mess. But I ALSO have to say it was interesting and entertaining at the same time. Sad for the Flores Family.
Rebecca,
You're a nit. Go back inside, get your tinfoil hat out and put it back on. The mean people trying to ruin everyone's lives will be gone as soon as you click your heels three times and say...
Sad to hear this news, boxing is a violent sport, I saw that firsthand when I promoted the "RUMBLE ON THE TOLLWAY" back in 2003 at Beltline and the Tollway. We had Johnson vs. Lou Savarese and many OTHER world heaveyweight boxing champs in attendance. Under a big tent off the Tollway at the then Club Life. It was bloody, BUT it was entertaining. Kinda like the gladiator days all over again!
Was this at TREC's Fight Night?
I've never been one for people beating on each other. I don't care what it's for. There's already to much violence and hate in this world and to make a sport out of it, just incourages it even more. What are we teaching? It's ok to hurt someone and possibly kill them, because it's a sport, it makes it right? NOT!!! My prayers go out to the family of the loved one they lost and the other boxer and his family. How sad for all of them.
If only you people would spend as much time and effort to stop DWI's this world would be a better place. Although sad he chose to be a boxer and knew the possible consequences. USE YOUR TIME AND EFFORT TO WRITE YOUR LEGISLATORS, ETC TO STOP INNOCENT KIDS AND FAMILIES FROM BEING KILLED BY DWI REPEAT OFFENDERS!!!! God bless his family.
After reading all these comments it show how people can be so cold hearted, you would think that if someone would put a comment it would be from the bottom of their heart, instead all that is said, is how bad boxing is... only people that knew benjamin would know how much he loved what he did, and not once did he do it to get weathly, like in a comment said above.
we as extended family can't stand all the arguements going on. what the FLORES family need is support , Not any more grief than what they have.
Lets all instead say a prayer for a great person that has passed away, in our hearts he will always be a champion, REST IN PEACE BENJAMIN FLORES!!!! YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN
Boxing is not a violent sport, it is an art form. I give all my respect to ben for being a boxer. He died doing something that he loved and i envy that. RIP Benjamin
I train at the same gym that Ben did. He was a humble person and loved the sport, he was good at it. All the hard training only come from the bottom of your heart. Im a women and enjoy the Art of the sport. yes its a sport because it was originaly a fight till the death in Gladiator days. Any how no matter what you do with your life your always at risk, pssssh we shouldnt sleep either because Many peopl die in their sleep... yeah so for all those who dont understand Boxing, well pick up a book one day on Boxing, go to a gym and talk to those Boxers who hae been training since childhood and grow up to be Champs, there is a list of them out there! God Bless!!
