When someone mentions the Mavericks' MVP, thoughts naturally turn to Dirk Nowitzki. And why not? Dirk leads the team in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and free throw percentage. But I counter that Jason Terry is this team's emotional MVP. Last night's game-winning jumper was the capper on an outstanding season, one that will net JET the NBA's "Sixth Man Of The Year". He's the most visible Maverick in the community and always seems to wear a huge smile on his face. He knocks down clutch jumper after clutch jumper. And, whenever the Mavs are down, it seems that JET is usually the one who revives them and gives them back their energy. Even Dirk calls him the team's "finisher". In a league where players' skills are now often rapidly starting to diminish after the age of 30, Terry seems to only be getting better. He will turn 32 in five months but is enjoying perhaps the best season of his career. He's averaging his highest points-per-game total since his 2nd year in the league. What's more astonishing is that the Mavericks are limited when it comes to offensive options. Other than Dirk and Terry, only Josh Howard averages in double-figures in scoring. Contrast that with the Lakers, who have five players averaging in double-figures. The Spurs have four. So the Mavs don't have many options and JET still gets his points. If there's anyone who deserves a ring, it's Terry. His selfless play, tremendous attitude and joy at simply being a Maverick have made him a big favorite here. Let's hope he sticks around to try for that ring here, rather than "jet' off elsewhere for a better chance at hardware. |
