Pat Summerall says John Madden called him last night and told him he was retiring. Summerall says he wanted his long time friend to hear it first before it was reported in the media.

"I was shocked," says Summerall. "I figured they'd have to carry him out of the booth one day."

Summerall and Madden worked as a broadcast team for 22-seasons from 1981 to 2001.

Madden is 73-years old and will celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary this fall. "It's time," he says.

Madden was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and is considered pro football's most popular broadcast analyst.
