In just a few hours Darren O'Day went from being picked up on a waivers claim by the Texas Rangers to crossing the border to Canada to being called in to pitch in a 7-7 game with runners on first and second in the bottom of the 11th. He didn't even have his own jersey (he wore Kason Gabbard's #30). His teammates had never met him. It didn't go well. The sidearm righty gave up a gapper to Toronto's Kevin Millar. Arlington's Vernon Wells scored and the Blue Jays won 8-7. Welcome Darren O'Day. He's taking his role as a Rangers pitcher seriously, fitting right in. Since C.J. Wilson walked Wells, he gets the loss. However, O'Day could be a good pickup for the Rangers. O'Day, 26, has pitched three innings in four appearances for the New York Mets this season, allowing 2 unearned runs and 5 hits with one walk and 2 strikeouts. He was designated for assignment Sunday. O'Day was selected by the Mets in the 2008 Rule 5 Draft from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and as a result, Texas would have to keep him on the major league roster for the entire season or offer him back to the Angels. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Angels in 2006, O'Day was on the Angels' opening day roster in 2008. He went 0-1 with a 4.57 ERA (22 ER/43.1 IP) over 30 relief appearances last season, his first in the majors. The Jacksonville, Fla.-native issued 14 walks against 29 strikeouts and allowed just 2 home runs. |
