Mavericks in position to advance

Here's an interesting little note and pay attention because it might be the only one I have.

The Dallas Mavericks lead the Spurs 3-1 in their best of seven series, that's happened 182 times in the NBA and only eight times -- eight of 182 -- has a team been up 3-1 and lost the series.

Game 5 is in San Antonio tonight. The Mavericks might lose that one, but unless they do something incredibly stupid they should be headed to the second round.

The Spurs are playing without Manu Ginobili and that makes a big difference.

But when your best players aren't playing their best basketball, and the Mavericks pair of Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry aren't, and you're still winning it's a very good sign.

It may not good enough to beat Denver or New Orleans, but it's a very good sign.

Editor's note: Ted Madden writes that history says Mavs will lose tonight.
