Aikman: Roy Williams trade could be worst in NFL history

UPDATE: Here's the raw video of Aikman's comments.

Hall of Fame Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman is not sold on wide receiver Roy Williams.

"I don't think you can give up what the Cowboys gave up for someone and it not be a sure bet," Aikman said.

The Cowboys gave up first, third and sixth-round picks for this month's NFL draft in the October trade for Williams. In 10 games for the Cowboys in 2008, Williams had just 19 receptions for 198 yards and one touchdown.

"I think this would be, if Roy Williams doesn't turn out the be the player they thought he'd be, this will be one of the worst trades in NFL history," Aikman said.

Aikman, when asked if it would be worse than the Joey Galloway trade, in which the Cowboys gave up two first-round draft picks in a last ditch effort for another Super Bowl run with Aikman at quarterback, said it would be worse.

Aikman said the Cowboys' personnel department has had lots of evaluation time on Williams, a University of Texas product.

"If he's not a number one receiver... that's a huge flaw in the scouting department," Aikman said.

Now, to be fair, Aikman could be forgetting about the Herschel Walker trade. I don't think many folks in Minnesota will ever find a trade worse than that one.

Aikman talked more than just Williams, including an assessment of current quarterback Tony Romo.

"I think part of his recklessness is part of what made him what he is," Aikman said of Romo.

He says, despite the chemistry challenges of last season and potentially lacking a top receiver, Aikman says the Cowboys have a lot going for them.

"I still think they're an extremely talented football team," he said.

Aikman was speaking after an announcement that Wingstop Restaurants, for which he is a pitchman, will be the official wing vendor at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Jerry Jones is a fool. You can't fix that. He probably did his own facelift.

RON said:

no one should really care about the cowboys giving up anything for Williams. All said and done, negative or positive about the Cowboys and Jerry Jones, the fans are the fools as Jones and the million dollar players keep on running to the bank as they get wealthier and the basic fan gets poorer.

Jerry has proven that he should be the one traded or fired as the GM. I love him for his dedication as an owner, but he would have fired at least 3 GM's in the last 13 years since the last Play-off win! He is the new Al Davis! When will he get it!

It really doesn't matter if they gave up all of their picks. With Jerry driving the draft bus, it isn't coming back with anything useful on it anyways. Having said that, I think we might see a different side of Williams now that Owens is out of Garrett's hair.

And as for Ron's comment. Its not just Jerry and the Cowboy players running to the bank. They're all getting rich off the working man.

Matt Millen the worst GM in football history fleeces the Dallas Cowboys GM Jerry Jones out of a 1st, 3rd and 6th rounder for Williams. Lets vote again on the GM thing Jerry maybe gaining on Millen!

There's nothing wrong with Roy Williams as a receiver other than the lack of chemistry between him and Romo last season. He's a capable receiver and I'm sure they'll get a natural rhythm worked out during the off season training. As for the price, he could be the best receiver ever, and they still paid too much for him.

Regarless of what happen, the Cowboys will miss T.O. and that was a dump move to get rid of him because Garrett's as the offense coach did't have the you know what to stand up and let T.O. know who run the offense. As for as Jerry being fired from GM. what make people think Jerry who own the team will put anyone else in charge other than his Son, maybe, so stop asking for Jerry to fire himself.
