A "chip" of a different kind

Subject matter: Autographs. Circa 1996.

tiger.jpgThere are no limits or boundaries when it comes to the autograph seeker. Not to mention the tales that are told around the water cooler the next day of just how you managed to pull it off.

We would like for you to share your story with us, but in the meantime please allow me this opportunity to share with you the story behind a very prized autograph and how it found its way to one unsuspecting soul.

He had just completed his practice round at the Colonial Golf Tournament in Fort Worth and was now being driven back to his hotel by several of Fort Worth's finest, "the men in blue". Somehow they convinced their high profile passenger that it would be well worth his time if they could make one quick stop en route to his hotel to pick up a package, one that he himself would enjoy.

mike2.jpgMike Smith, owner of Paris Coffee Shop in Fort Worth, stood in his usual position by the front door greeting his lunch patrons with a warm hello. It just so happens that Paris has the distinguished honor of having been recognized in several national publications for its homemade pies and chicken fried steak. Having said that, it's not uncommon to see a Nolan Ryan, Mark Brooks or Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief catching a bite to eat.

After one of the escorting officers entered the diner and exchanged pleasantries with Mike he soon departed with a bag in hand. As the car door opened Mike caught a smile and wave from its waiting celebrity passenger, Tiger Woods.

You see, apparently Tiger had discussed earlier with the officers on his security detail of his passion and love for chocolate chip cookies. Well what were sworn officers of the law, men who had taken an oath to "Serve and Protect" to do? They extended a little "Cow Town" hospitality. Everybody wins, Tiger gets his fill of homemade chocolate chip cookies and Mike gets an unexpected visit and signed autograph from the No. 1 golfer in the world.

It was Woods' only appearance at Colonial.

And so, a story is born.
