April 28, 2009 ArchivesLast year, J-Ho drew major criticism after throwing his own birthday party with the Mavs on the brink of elimination to New Orleans. This year, Josh can party in style. He was outstanding again, as the Mavs took care of business and advanced in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. This was a team effort through and through, all series long. Credit Rick Carlisle for truly developing a deep bench during the regular season ...
Mavericks fans have gotta like how their team put San Antonio away on the road, winning the series 4 games to 1. Avery Johnson said a week or 2 ago that he likes the way the Mavericks are playing. He thinks Dallas is playing strong at the right time, just like they did in 2006 when they made a run to the NBA finals. And unlike they did in 2007 when they had the leagues best record but lost in the first round to Golden State. That team ...
The Dallas Mavericks have five players in double digit scoring early in the fourth. And Erick Dampier has 9 points. Jason Terry is coming back from some struggles to a 5 of 10 shooting night so far, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. He has 13 with 9:07 to play. Dirk Nowitzki lead the Mavs with 23. The Spurs have just two players... and I bet...
Boxing has become irrelevant in sports, but if you can remember back a few years to when Mike Tyson and his contemporaries were in their prime then you have a good comparison to game 5 of the playoff series between the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs. Every time the Spurs get close, the Mavs go on a run. And every time the Mavs look like they've opened up a comfortable lead, the Spurs wake them up with an quick jab. Th...
Tim Duncan is a very good basketball player, but even as a big man free throws still count. He just missed two free throws. In a game the Spurs have made tight, after trailing by 14 in the second quarter, that hurts. On the other end, Josh Howard just nailed a three for the Mavs, who lead 70-59 with 3:30 to play. ...Mavs are 1 quarter away from adavancing for the first time since the year they made a run to the NBA finals in 2006. Dirk has 23 - his best this series. Kidd hits his 4th 3 pter to end the 3rd ...Dirk only 4 pts in the 2nd. He has 15. Only Mav in double digits. Parker 12, Duncan 11. Spurs getting nice play from George Hill and Ime Udoka (each have 7pts) Good thing Parker missed the 3 pt shot at the end of the 2nd... or that could have really given the Mavs some doubts going into the 2nd half. Mavs take a 4 pt lead into the locker room. Still, a great half by the Mavs. They lead by 4 at the break. ...Parker and Duncan have combined for 21 of the Spurs 39 pts ...I think this Spurs team could have a run in them... They've outscored the Mavs 19-16 in the 2nd. ...Spurs really off their game tonight... as Duncan misses a dunk... Finley throws the ball away... 6 turnovers... I really thought they would come to play tonight. But that's not the case so far. ...Berea with a quick 4 pts. He has 6. Terry has 7 pts. Mavs have equaled their largest lead of 14 pts 45-31 Mavs 6:43 remains in the 2nd. ...Parker has been quiet. But he is fun to watch. Nice drive to the hoop gives him 8 pts. ...Mavs shooting 54% Mavs lead after 1st quarter 31-20 Nice to see Jason Terry respond to Bruce Bowen's 3 with a 3 at the other end. Also great to see Dirk scoring - he has 11 pts at the end of 1st quarter Howard has 8 and Terry has 5 Duncan leads Spurs with 9 ...Nice defensive steal by Josh Howard. Mavs looking great on both ends of the court. How long can they play at this pace? 24-10 Mavs Parker and Duncan have 8 pts combined, Dirk has 11 pts ...Dirk is hot scoring 9 pts early Mavs with an early 10 point lead. 14-4 - Will San Antonio respond, should be interesting? ...Now that the NFL draft is over, it's time to give TCU some credit. The Horned Frogs had five players drafted over the weekend, that's more than any other college in the State of Texas. "It goes to show you don't have to go to a Big 12 school to have good players," says Head Coach Gary Patterson. "That's what we're proving all along. You don't have to be in an automatic conference. Our guys are graduating, and they're also getting a ch...
With the conclusion of the latest version of the NFL draft, it got me thinking. Graham Harrell - 15,793 yards, 134 touchdowns - not picked. Chase Daniel - 12,515 yards, 101 touchdowns - not picked. That's over 28,000 passing yards and 235 touchdowns between the two against Big 12 competition, but apparently they aren't good enough to be drafted. I realize the NFL has been burned by the spread offenses of the college football landscape...
When an NBA team loses a playoff game by 58 points at home, it deserves more than just passing notice. And because the game was buried on NBA-TV, I couldn't watch a minute of it, so I found an article from a Times-Picayune columnist to help illustrate just how bad a night it was, from a local perspective. You can read the article here. I feel really out of the norm here, but I can't complain about the Cowboys draft. Yes, David Buehler was a stretch, but the Cowboys did really well late in the draft. We've been focusing so much on the lackluster Cowboys' draft that we've perhaps missed the biggest story of all. The Eagles and Giants had terrific drafts and addressed key needs. They put more distance between themselves and the Cowboys. This is not good news for Jerry Jones, who hopes to be more than competitive when his brand spanking new palace opens in Arlington this season. Philadelphia started by selecting Missouri recei...
For a fourth-round draft pick who is expected to be primarily a backup quarterback in the next few years, Stephen McGee sure is causing a stir. There is this story about Texas Tech coach Mike Leach blasting the former A&M quarterback. The best way to predict the future is to study the past, right? There's a neat website that gives the history of what happens in best-of-seven series. If you have some time to waste, check it out here. The short version is this - when a team plays on the road in Game 1 and holds a 3-1 series advantage, that team wins Game 5 only 30% of the time. But the good news is...
Here's an interesting little note and pay attention because it might be the only one I have. The Dallas Mavericks lead the Spurs 3-1 in their best of seven series, that's happened 182 times in the NBA and only eight times -- eight of 182 -- has a team been up 3-1 and lost the series. Game 5 is in San Antonio tonight. The Mavericks might lose that one, but unless they do something incredibly stupid they should be headed to the s...
