April 7, 2009 ArchivesI asked Joe Trahan, our sports department golf guru (other than Dale Hansen of course) if he wanted to make a little wager. I gave him the choice, Tiger Woods or the field to win the Masters. He took Tiger. I knew he'd do that. So I'll have to settle for the 95 other golfers that will try to keep Tiger from winning his 5th Masters. I'm not liking my odds. Speaking of odds, let's check em out. Vegas has Tiger as a 2/1 favorite and they...
With apologies to my boss, Troy Aikman sounded like the "voice of reason" today when meeting with the media. I love listening to him during games or interview situations, because everything he says is well thought-out. That's not very common in the sports world. If you get a chance, watch Aikman's full interview here. I'm working on a story for 10:00 tonig...
Tank Johnson is rolling into Cincinnati. His agent told the Bengals team Web site that Johnson has reached a deal with the team. The Cowboys had no desire to keep Johnson after two lackluster seasons as a backup nose tackle. Former Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who was already gone by the time Johnson arrived in Dallas apparently is excited to get Johnson. Maybe he didn't do much homework on this one. Troy, say it isn't so. The Roy Williams trade could possibly turn out to be the worst in NFL history? First of all, no matter how poorly Roy may play in the future, the trade to get him from Detroit in no way can be considered the worst in NFL history. Hands down, that is the Herschel Walker trade from the Cowboys to the Vikings in 1989. That one-handed deal eventually netted the Cowboys Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, Kevin Sm...
UPDATE: Here's the raw video of Aikman's comments. Hall of Fame Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman is not sold on wide receiver Roy Williams. "I don't think you can give up what the Cowboys gave up for someone and it not be a sure bet," Aikman said. The Cowboys gave up first, third and sixth-round picks for this month's NFL draft in the October trade f...
North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough, last year's player of the year, returned to UNC for his senior season and is now a national champion. But I don't think his decision to play his final collegiate season was completely about winning a title; part of him had to know that his NBA future is not bright. I don't know much about Hansbrough, but his decision to forgo the 2008 NBA draft showed that he's a pretty good self-evaluator. Hansbrough...
OK, this is my time to brag a little bit. My take on filling out the NCAA Men's Tournament bracket is that it's pretty much dumb luck, better to be lucky than smart. I was pretty lucky this year. As a result, I won the WFAA pool, sponsored by gumshoe Brett Shipp (and beat him by one point 145-144, somewhat ironically, in the CBS bracket challenge). I had three of the four Final Four teams (no Michigan State) ...
Ranger fans, take a deep breath... no, deeper than that... feel it wash over you... a feeling that may be quite foriegn... soak it in... ahh, that's it... the feeling of perfection. And the best part is, your Rangers are off today, so you get another 24 hours to make sure you fully comprehend the feeling. The rangers giving their fans more hope for the future in an opening day win that was next to perfect. Kevin Millwood let o...
