By chance, I didn't get to see Monday night's Mavericks/Thunder game. I was having dinner and had some more pressing things to take care of. Just as well. I might have gotten sick to my stomach if I had seen that pathetic display of basketball. I just can't fathom how a team of the Mavericks' ability can come close to losing to a team not only 31 games under .500, but one missing its two leading scorers. File this one away in the "gutless loss" department. Over the course of an 82-game schedule, there are undoubtedly some nights when a team just doesn't show up. Maybe the flight got in at 5 AM or there are some major injuries on the squad, etc. But the Mavs have no excuses here. We're relatively late in the season. Every win in that rugged Western Conference is crucial. This loss could be the difference between 8th and 9th place. This loss could be the difference between having home court in the first round of the playoffs and playing on the road. But to quote Jim Mora..."Playoffs? Did you say, playoffs?" The Mavs don't deserve to utter the word right now. I imagine they come out of the gate like demons Wednesday night against San Antonio. If not, they'll still be feeling the after effects of Monday's humiliation. Time for Kidd, Dirk, JET and the other veterans to step up and demand more. This is not the time to go gutless. This is when we start finding out who wants it more. And the Mavs sure didn't look like they wanted it Monday night. 2 CommentsLeave a comment |
