There are still 19 games left for the Mavericks to improve their playoff position (let alone, make the playoffs), but if the season ended today...their reward would be taking on the #1 seed L.A. Lakers in the first round. That won't last long. Having grown up in Dallas, I've attended my share of Mavericks/Lakers playoff games. Back in the day, it was Magic and Kareem vs. Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Brad Davis. Those were some classic games...contests that left Reunion Arena shaking with noise. This year however, figure on sounds of silence...once the Mavs are swept by Kobe and company. Of course, anything can happen in the postseason, but this appears to be too high of a mountain for Dallas to climb. If the Lakers bring any sort of effort, the Mavs will be behind the eight ball all series long. The talent level separating the two teams is immense. SportsTalk producer Josh Harvey says the Lakers would have to lose another starter to injury, just for the Mavs to have a fighting chance. Those aren't odds I'd count on. I'm certainly not advocating "tanking" the final 19 games, in order to shoot for the NBA Draft Lottery. The chances of hitting paydirt are slim, unless you happen to be one of the three or four worst teams in the league. The Mavs aren't there...yet. If they go out in round one yet again, you have to figure on some major changes to the roster next season. So get ready to possibly cheer on Dirk and the boys in their quest to dethrone the Lakers from the West's crown. It won't be easy....and it won't happen.
