Ellis getting bad rap

Newspaper bloggers and radio show hosts have been getting on Greg Ellis for "speaking out" about his contract situation. We did a story with him that aired Sunday night, and Ellis said a couple things that have created the stir: the first was that he has no idea whether the Cowboys will bring him back for the final year of his contract, and the other was about why the Cowboys have struggled in December the last several years. Ellis cliams the team's struggles have to do with the instability caused by players not knowing where they will be the following season (that's a very abbreviated version, see the entire unedited interview here).

Photojournalist Arnold Payne and I probably spent an hour and a half with Ellis, between the interview and him showing us around his production company. I like Ellis - he's a real nice, down-to-earth guy, which makes him somewhat unique among professional athletes. Watching him interact with his employees simply reinfoced that opinion. I didn't feel like Ellis was complaining about his contract during our interview; he sounded very rational and realistic when discussing his future. A couple radio shows dissected some of the interview and got on Ellis for (again) complaining about his contract. But I didn't get that at all, and neither did A.P. (who's been covering the Cowboys for more than 25 years).

Thank you Ted. I've always liked Ellis too. It's nice to hear the truth from someone who has actually done a little work, not just gabbed about it on the radio.

Thanks Ted for an article that tells it like it is. I saw the interview with Ellis and I agree with you. There are a couple of reporters that take everything a player says and turn it around to make it sound negative in an attempt to sway public opinion. And most of this was done to satisfy their own personal agenda. It is comforting to see a reporter report the facts. Keep up the good work.
