The Dallas Cowboys signed linebacker Keith Brooking over the weekend. He'll be a starter. To add depth, the team signed Matt Stewart to a one-year deal today. Stewart signed with the Arizona Cardinals on April 17, but was released on the final roster reduction and remained out of football last season. Stewart was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round (102nd overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played four seasons with the Falcons before joining the Cleveland Browns for three years. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips was the defensive coordinator in Atlanta in 2002 and 2003, he also served as interim head coach for the final three games of that season. For his career, Stewart has played in 93 games with 61 starts and totaled 357 tackles (201 solo), eight sacks, one interception and eight pass breakups. Look for him to mostly play on special teams. This is also some insurance if the Cowboys can't resign linebacker Kevin Burnett. |
