It'll be a Boxell family reunion in Austin this week. Doug Boxell, the head coach at Ponder High School, is taking his team back, trying to win a second straight Class 2A State Championship. If Shallowater reaches the 2A finals, then he'll be coaching against his son Lance, who is a student coach on that team. And since Isaiah Boxell is a point guard for the Lions, he may have to try and beat his brother if Ponder and Shallowater square off in the finals. And if that isn't enough, Nazareth is at the tournament in Austin as well. That's where Zach Boxell is the head coach. The only Boxell left out of the mix is Lance Boxell. He's the head coach at Krum, just seven miles north of Ponder. But it was his team which handed his dad's team their only loss this year. Ponder is 38-1. They developed a love for the game, and went into coaching, says Doug, the father of this coaching family. "I didn't always encourage them to go into coaching, they had a passion for it and it just worked out real well for them," Doug says. So if the Boxell's can land two championship trophies this weekend, their family reunion will have even more to celebrate. You can read my story and watch the video here. |
