There have been many memorable endings in the Super Bowl. Remember wide right? How about Joe Montana finding John Taylor? Or Kevin Dyson being just short? There's Adam Vinatieri kicking a late field goal, twice. And who here could forget Jackie Smith dropping that pass all alone in the end zone. Last night we saw another great one, at least a great ending as both teams turned in gutty performances. And Larry Fitzgerald showed he may very well be the best player in the NFL right now. Santonio Holmes is pretty good too. Toss in a slew of penalties, a safety and the longest play in Super Bowl history and you have a memorable game. For Kurt Warner, how can he retire now? But this game came down to three thrilling catches in the fourth quarter. Just throw it to Fitzgerald, if he's covered or not. Find him in the end zone and toss it up. Then do a simple in route and let him run away. The Steelers weren't done, though. When Ben Roethlisberger threw to Holmes in triple coverage only a spectacular catch would give the Pittsburgh its record sixth Super Bowl title. And what a catch it was. Two toes clipping the ground and a ball cradled perfectly. Wow. Somewhere, probably in New York, David Tyree is thinking: "How can somebody else make such a great catch just a year after mine." Not every play of this game was riveting, much of the third quarter was a wash, but the end is what matters and what makes Super Bowl XLIII an all-time great game. |
