Pacman Jones officially no longer a Cowboy

Update: I got the official word from a Cowboys' spokeswoman at 2:13 p.m. Monday that Adam Jones was released.

Don't you just love the NFL.

The Cowboys announced on Jan. 7 that Adam "Pacman" Jones would be cut, they just couldn't actually waive a player until today, after the end of the season. Wouldn't you love it if you boss told you: "I'm going to fire you in a month."

So now you can say your goodbyes to the cornerback and return man.

It was a rocky stay for Jones in Dallas. First was the draft-day trade in April that brought Pac to Dallas. He had sat out the entire 2007 season on a league mandated suspension for violating their conduct policy.

It didn't get much better while he was here.

First the Cowboys didn't really know if Jones would be playing. He was allowed to go to training camp with the team, but it was just before the season that he and the team found out he could play -- well could participate.

The Cowboys never really saw him play to the level you would expect of someone a team should take such a risk on.

Then came his Oct. 7 scuffle at the Joule Hotel with a team-issued bodyguard.

He was suspended six games.

Then in his return against the eventual Super Bowl champion Steelers he hurt his neck and missed another game.

What may be most disappointing -- did anyone really expect Pac to stay out of trouble? -- was his performance on the field.

He was supposed to be a game changer, a shutdown corner and explosive returner. He was none of that.

Jones was a serviceable corner and a poor returner. Simply put, he turned out not to be worth the risk.

At the time, I thought it was a no-lose situation. If he turned things around he could be a great addition, if he didn't the Cowboys weren't out much. Problem was he didn't stay out of trouble and wasn't very good on the field.

He had 31 tackles and no interceptions. According to the coaches' stats he did tie for the team lead with 13 pass deflections and he had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The biggest disappointment, on the field, were his returns. He averaged just 4.5 yards on punt returns and 22.1 yards on kickoff returns. No touchdowns. Three fumbles.

All Pacman Jones really was, was a distraction. And maybe that was the biggest problem. On a team full of distractions, he was yet another one.

Who cares it is just a game. The tragedy is that we can all be sure that there will be more games next year. Football should be an elimination sport. You lose a game and you are out forever. That way at least sometime in the future it all ends. The Super Bowl? Thank god that is not about football anymore. It is now about good old american product hype. The game is just the broken down old jalopy that brings us the bottles of Dr. Feelgood elixer. I would rather watch reruns of I Love Lucy. OHHH Ricky, OHHH Lucy! Wow,now that was entertainment.

I beg to differ, Charles. The SuperBowl is not just about product placement. Many people actually watch it because, TADA, they like football. If you don't like it, why comment?

Anyway, I'm glad they got rid of pacman, he was a poor choice and Jerry Jones knew it. If he could get someone in there to help manage the team while he does all the business stuff, it would be a heck of a lot smoother for our "boys". Now if we could only get rid of T.O. and Romo. You know, people never mention Romo... he's a terrible quarterback. can somebody teach him to take a sack once in a while. I'd rather him get sacked every now and again than get called for intentional grounding. jerk. anyway, that's my two cents! ^_^

This team is going to need some really GREAT drafts in the next couple of years, if we're going to catch up to the Steelers on Super Bowl wins. That's why it's more critical than ever to have a GREAT GM! Go to www.FireTheCowboysGM.com website and sign the online petition asking Jerry Jones to step down as General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys!

GO COWBOYS!!
