The woman who claims to be a half sister of Bob Hayes, Lucille Hester, says she wants his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame to go smoothly. It doesn't look like it will now, though. Mike Fisher has a story on dallasbasketball.com where friends and family members say Hester is a fraud. She's been telling people for years she's Hayes' half sister, while they have been saying nothing. Former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach says he would be shocked to find out she's not a sister. And you do have to wonder why nobody objected until now? It's gonna take awhile to figure this one out. Hayes waited 28 years to get in the Hall of Fame, but died 6-years before he knew he would. Hayes apparently became a much better football player after he died than he was when he played. And now this mess about who's family and who's not. It's typical of the mess Bob Hayes had to deal with much of his life. He had a long battle with drug addiction, spent time in prison for selling drugs, although a lot of people don't think he really did. It's those off the field problems that supposedly kept him out of the Hall for so long, but if that's how the voters really do decide, they need to go back and take another long look at some of the people they did vote in. He did have his problems off the field -- a lot of players do -- but on the field he changed the way the game was played. Hayes still has records that Cowboys Hall of Fame receivers can't reach and the highlight clips of Bob Hayes on a football field can still excite a football fan 30 years after he played. He was that good and the pro football hall of fame voters finally noticed. Maybe it is true: Better late than never. But he should have been alive when the honor finally came, if for no other reason, than to tell us who Lucille Hester really is. Who cares if Lucille Hester is or isn't his sister, half sister, friend, whatever...she's not the one going into the Hall of Fame. The Hayes family/friends need to put all that nonsense aside, come together and celebrate the wonderful athlete he was, why bring it up now?? Heck...the Dallas Cowboy players can't even get a break when they are in the grave.
Dale has a point that everyone should heed. Bob Hayes will soon be in the Hall of Fame. Sister or not.
Dale, I think you are the best sports broadcaster
on TV. You have a great personality and not afraid to tell it like it is.
